Nintendo Gaming / Star Fox Armada: MIA
« on: April 27, 2003, 12:45:16 PM »
If Matt from IGN is to be believed... Silicon Knights' game for E3 will not be Too Human, rather something else.

BTW, even if Star Fox Armada is to come out this year it nevertheless won't be the biggest Nintendo title of 2003, Mario Kart: Double Dash!! will hold that throne

Sir Kero, I have a request. Can you inform me on which video games or video game series that those composers worked on? I admit that I am rather ill-informed when it comes to composers in the video game industry and would like to expand my knowledge a bit further.

Uh... no. Overworks is composed of the original Phantasy Star team. We are referring to Phantasy Star 1-4, not Phantasy Star Online, which is the Sonic Team game. Yuji Naka was the lead programmer for the old Phantasy Stars I believe, but that was pretty much the extent. Reiko Konada is also the head producer for Overworks, and she's the creator of the Phantasy Star series.

I'm all for new and different games. But I'd also like straight updates of my favorite franchises. I'd rather they leave the innovation to brand new franchises instead of screwing around with old franchises.

In other words... Zelda should stay bird eyes view, Mario should stay 2D, Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World shouldn't have had the world map concept, Metroid should stay 2D side scrolling, Metal Gear should stay bird eyes view rather than 3D, Rayman should stay 2D, Doom shouldn't incorporate mission styles in Doom III and rather should continue the "find key, look for exit" tradition, Warcraft shouldn't have included the concept of "heroes", "RPS" strategy, or even sea battles of Warcraft II, Dragon Quest shouldn't have included the class system, Final Fantasy should've just stayed with choosing a set character class and playing him through the whole game, Mortal Kombat shouldn't have included the combo and fighting style systems, Dead or Alive shouldn't have included the concept of tag-teams, A Link to the Past shouldn't have included the concept of Light and Dark world, Ocarina of Time shouldn't have had time traveling, and of course many more but I think I've sad more than a mouth full already.

Just because it has two characters on a kart does not mean it needs co-op. Besides... it's dull anyways to be the item user as opposed to the driver. It's not idiotic at all.

You get tired of a level, you don't play it for a while. But if you like racing with two specific racers, both of which have karts you hate (I assume you can pick which one you use the kart from, probably depending on who you pick first), you're kind of stuck.

I'm sick and tired of having the same old karts all the time, and I can't switch characters to change it either

BTW, that's not true. But just wanted to make a statement

Very well then... when Need for Speed allows you to hijack opponents cars then

What the heck are Nintendo thinking????? Its generally accepted that the SNES and GBA versions of Mario Kart were much much better than the N64 version. Yet what do they give us? A game which is clearly based on the N64 version. Big wide tracks, including those city based ones, and they've even gone as far as to remove the go-karts. What made the original title so much fun was that you raced on pretty tight and twisty go-kart tracks. In 150cc mode it was a challenge to get around the track at full speed and required much hopping and sliding to stay on the track. Battle modes too were an art, with well timed red shell "boomeraning back down the adjacent passage into your opponents path. It was a beautiful balanced game. This was lost in the N64 version, where many tracks lost the sense of speed, tracks were too wide so it took less skill to navigate them, and the battle mode maps were pretty poor in comparison to the playability of the SNES version. Along comes GBA version and is universally acclaimed. It redeems the license. Mario Kart is once again great. All Nintendo needed to do was take the exact same levels and gameplay mechanics, and stretch them up vertically on the z-axis to make them 3d, whilst keeping the dimensions the same. The slap on some nice pretty textures, and bingo.. perfect Mario Kart in a real 3d world instead of pseudo 3D mode 7. Do they? No. They give us a sequel to MK64, and its back to dire arcade racing targetted at kids. All I wanted was full screen 4 player MK from the GBA brought upto date on the GC. That would sell in droves, whereas this, I fear, will not. MK64 was a disappointment, and I'd bet this will be too. Depressing.

IGN Preview 23rd April

Umm... first off... Mario Kart 64 did sell in droves so I can't see how you can claim that this "sequel" wouldn't sell. And many people did actually enjoy Mario Kart 64. Plus I think it's still absurd that such claims can be made from 6 screenshots and the info revealed. Nevertheless yes, I do predict this to be less hectic than the original Mario Kart in terms of track designs, but at the same time I do know that I'll be having a blast with 3 other friends (7 w/ LAN capabilities).

Umm... the same way it has in the past? You control both characters you know and it isn't even confirmed that two players will control one kart. The game will play the same as always only that the second character is added in for more strategy w/ the usage of character exclusive items.

And since I know people will probably overlook this (they have in the past)... I'll just repeat...

ONE PERSON CONTROLS BOTH CHARACTERS ON THE KART!

a dissapointment after the E3 demo we saw a little while back, which looked very nice
I'm also not liking the new karts. they look silly, predictable, and appear as if they handle very differently (they also sit much higher).

I really would like to have that super damn good looking N64 game

And the E3 demo was placed against a black background w/ no AI and only two characters in movement. Not a fair comparison.

To me the new karts look more homely to each character. And seriously... predictable? Wouldn't the old karts be far more predictable? I mean these new karts came as a complete surprise no?

And you seem to remind me of someone who was bashing Eternal Darkness and saying that he can tell that the person was struggling with the controls for the game, your claim on the controls seem just as absurd although perhaps moreso since you are basing it off of screenshots rather than videos.

This isn't Grand Theft Mario

When Gran Turismo starts letting you jump out of your car and hijack an opponents car then I'll think about your idea being plausible

There will be 6 generic items and 8 character exclusive items.

That's why the switching between characters adds a certain amount of depth to the game.

Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg is coming this year. A nice and seemingly original game from Sonic Team. I'm going to keep an eye on this one

Until then I think maybe you might want to check out Rayman 3. Sonic Adventure DX looks like it'll be a nice choice but it's coming out June. Maybe Wario World might turn out well despite the impressions from E3 2002. After all, it's been well over a year since it was first shown so the game should've advanced well enough to be a worth purchase.

Sorry that most of my games suggested are future games

I'm inclined towards creating one for the next system. Nintendo pretty much did most of what they could've done with the current SSB formula. Just stick with the current SSBM and wait until next generation before creating another one. And hopefully even perhaps changing the formula around.

Hey, they are adding in some more changes w/ Mario Kart and Pikmin, while Camelot is supposedly making major changes to Mario Golf and Mario Tennis. I'm sure HAL is capable of making enough changes to Super Smash Bros. Melee to separate it from the pack

I believe Osiris was talking about Zelda, not Mario Kart. Regardless I will say that damn... he will probably become the most respected and level-headed poster on this board[/end sarcasm]

I think the problem is that some people are against change. Zelda doesn't have a "crappy" style. It's style is "unique" and "different". I mean, think about this: the only Nintendo franchise that hasn't gotten backlash thus far was F-Zero, and even though I believe it will still turn out great and do the series justice, it also at the same time doesn't seem to do anything to ADVANCE the series gameplay wise. Nor does it seem any different than the same-old just for new consoles. I'm not against F-Zero GC at all BTW, I'm just using it as a point.

Now we have Zelda, which got complained for having a new style. Now with Mario Kart having some new features to keep the series "fresh", "unique", and "new" and then we have people complaining about it. Makes me wonder where this industry and its audience is heading.

If the direction of video games is going the way of games not distinguishing themselves anymore and being "unique" then it would indeed be very disappointing. I want changes, and I'm sure others do too. If you are against change then I think you have to perhaps understand that there's a certain concept called "creativity" that happens to be a vital part of something called "art" that does indeed play a part in this industry.

Nintendo Gaming / Mario Kart: Double Dash Question
« on: April 23, 2003, 06:27:31 PM »
You will be controlling both characters. It'll play just like the old Mario Karts in terms of control most likely w/ maybe a new addition.

There isn't even a 2 player co-op mode confirmed yet. It's all bunch of speculation along with some rabid "post before you think" people who post that it's co-op without doing their homework.

« on: April 23, 2003, 01:20:41 PM »
Miyamoto has confirmed another Zelda will be done for the GCN.

However, I HOPE that this isn't another Zelda and hope it's just Soul Calibur II Link.

It is way too early to announce another Zelda. Plus I want Nintendo to work on new and original titles rather than rely on sequels all the way. Hopefully Miyamoto will focus on NEW franchises as he said last E3.

Nintendo Gaming / Pikmin 2!
« on: April 23, 2003, 12:44:21 PM »
They took away the time limit feature. Hopefully the game will be designed well enough so that the limited time feature won't make the game too easy. Last time the time limit was integrated into to the game and was vital to the gameplay, and I liked the sense of urgency it placed upon the player. I'm sure they'll make changes though to coincide with the elimination of the time limit.

I like the new changes they made, but the best part IMO is the revealing of 60 different types of enemies. I really enjoyed the enemies in Pikmin as they are well varied, if this continues in Pikmin 2 then...

Random dungeons sound great too.

I like the idea about the double seated karts, but the karts look stupid.  Take the original kart, and make it extra wide so it fits two and then it would be the best game ever.  But anyways, if you can play it on LAN, I'm pretty sure it will be online too.

Umm.. don't think that'll work considering most likely the person in the back seat can place items left or right, it'll be quite difficult to reach over the other driver . Besides, making the Kart wider will affect the gameplay as the Karts will take up more area space. Doing it in the fashion that they did doesn't create that effect.

I really like the changes they are making, and boy am I glad that they are changing the formula so that it doesn't feel exactly like Mario Kart 64.

48
I hope it's not another Zelda game. Way too early to start another one. I want something new from Nintendo.

I want something new and original from Nintendo just like Pikmin, Animal Crossing, and Cubivore were this generation. A bigger original title I would like as well.

49
I believe it could really be Soul Calibur II Link. I don't believe Nintendo Power has ever mentioned Soul Calibur II at all in any issue... so yeah... this is something new for Nintendo Power (talk about behind the times).

Nintendo Gaming / Wario World Developer Not Treasure?
« on: April 22, 2003, 07:00:44 PM »
Well, it's officially confirmed that the game is being developed by Treasure. I am quite shocked though that a Treasure game got such disappointing impressions from E3. But I guess it was just an early build. I'm sure Treasure won't let gamers down . If only they would bring over Sin and Punishment...
