NWR Forums First-Party/Third-Party Top 10 Lists
« on: October 03, 2012, 07:38:24 PM »
With the NWR Staff Third-Party Top 10 in the books (and the first-party one almost done), I figured let's do something kind of fun. Let's do the same thing but for the forums. We know you disagree with us, so here's your chance to let your voice be heard. When this is all said and done (as long as we get a decent amount of contributions), we'll post the list on the website in some fashion.

So, throw your top 10 first-party and third-party Wii games down below. Make sure they're ordered, otherwise they won't be counted.

First-Party means....anything published, developed, or created by Nintendo. The Last Story is a Nintendo game, even though it was published by Xseed in North America. Ask for clarification if you're unsure.
Also, as per how we handled it in the site top 10, Metroid Prime 3/Trilogy count as one game. Every other game is separate.

Third-Party means...anything not published, developed, or created by Nintendo. Ask for any clarification if you're unsure.

To get your list heard, post them below. We won't accept anything later than Sunday October 14 at midnight ET.

I didn't play many third party games on Wii, so it would not be fair to make a list based on the Xbox 360 versions. So my first party:

1)Super Smash Bros. Brawl
2)Metroid Prime: Trilogy
3)The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
4)Super Mario Galaxy
5)New Play Control! Pikmin
6)Mario Kart Wii
7)Super Mario Galaxy 2
8)Wii Sports Resort
9)Animal Crossing: City Folk
10)New Super Mario Bros. Wii

2. Galaxy
3. DKCR
4. Metroid Prime Trilogy
5. Super Smash Bros. Brawl
6. Wario Land: Shake It

9. Wii Sports
10. Wii Sports Resort

Interested to see how this turns out.  I bet some people will be upset about the group results here too.
 ;)

My picks below.  Trying to narrow down and order the third party list was especially difficult - notably more difficult for me than the first party list. There were over 20 third party games that I had in mind, and dropping to 10 took some effort and compromise.

First Party
10. Wii Sports
9. Punch-Out!!
8. Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn
7. Mario Kart Wii
6. Wario Land Shake It!
5. Project Zero 2 (Damn NoA)
4. Super Mario Galaxy
3. Endless Ocean Blue World
2. Metroid Prime Trilogy
1. Xenoblades Chronicles

Third Party
10. Bit.Trip Complete
9. Tiger Woods PGA Tour
8. Shiren the Wanderer
7. Boom Blox Bash Party
6. Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure
5. Little King's Story
4. Silent Hill Shattered Memories
3. Tatsunoko vs Capcom
2. Trauma Team
1. Monster Hunter Tri

  • Super Mario Galaxy 2
  • Super Smash Bros Brawl
  • Wii Sports Resort
  • Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
Missing from list due to lack of play: Last Story, Return to Dreamland, DKCR (though I suspect only one would make the list)

3rd Party

  • Zack and Wiki: Quest for Barbaro's Treasure
  • MLB Power Pros
  • Rock Band 3
  • Boom Blox: Bash Party

Missing for lack of play: Little King's Story, House of the Dead: Overkill, POP: Forgotten Sands, Tatsunoko v. Capcom

4. Skylanders

I would find this disappointing coming from a staff member of any game-related site, but doubly so at a site focused on Nintendo consoles and games.

Did you not play any other third party games on Wii?  Or did you dislike everything else released by third parties?  With such a wide variety of games released on Wii, and so many niche genres covered, it's curious to see that your list is only 4 games long.

(Not just talking. Genuinely curious.)

Guilty Gear XX: Accent Core
...

Surely you mean Accent Core Plus?  Maybe you haven't had the pleasure to try the difference?  (Take that - now your list has been picked apart!)

If I didn't suck so much at fighting games, GGXX:AC+ might've made my list. But TvsC is much more accessible, and I couldn't justify putting both on.  I also love Samurai Shodown Anthology more than it deserves, although retro collections are a tough sell for "best of" lists. Tough choices indeed.

Nope. Accent Core is the one that sits on my shelf, and it's the one that makes my list. ;) Maybe I should seek out this modified version someday? We'll see.

Don't get me wrong. I LOVE Tatsunoko a lot. A LOT. Like Mr. Shugart, I'm a fight game fan. Not tourney worthy, but I can hold my own really well.

But yeah, Power Pros is fantastic. I wish Konami had the gonads to bring the Jikkyu Powerful Pro series stateside every year. No clue why they stopped after the second year. :/

1. Super Mario Galaxy
2. Super Mario Galaxy 2
3. Skyward Sword
4. Metroid Prime 3
5. Donkey Kong Country Returns
6. Twilight Princess
7. Super Smash Bros Brawl
8. New Super Mario Bros Wii
9. Super Paper Mario
10. Kirby's Epic Yarn

A pretty boring predictable list. I haven't played Xenoblade, something I hope to fix soon. But, I think the Wii has the best library of platformers of any console ever. I also haven't even played Wario Land Shake It either. Maybe the Wii library wasn't the most diverse (okay it wasn't) but considering that platformers are forever my true love in gaming, I was okay with that. Also I think Super Mario Galaxy 2 is the better Galaxy, but the original Galaxy was first and benefitted from all that comes with that.

On the other side, I bought Other M two years ago and still haven't beaten it because I feel no desire to fight with it anymore. That's the biggest disappointment of this generation.

Surprising... I can only come up with EIGHT first party games I feel comfortable voting on for a  "Top 10 for Wii List" ... mostly because I have a bunch of titles in my backlog that I can't vote for (XenoBlade, Galaxy 2, Pokepark) and some very big games that I just missed out on (DKCR, Punch-Out)...

First Party

1.Wii Music
2.Skyward Sword
3.Mario Kart Wii
4.Wii Fit
5.Mario Galaxy
6.Wii Sports
7.NSMB Wii
8.The Last Story

Ah... but when it comes to third party... what a wealth of choices! Games I truly had pure, innocent, unadulterated fun in! And nothing you say can make it otherwise!

Third Party

1.No More Heroes
2.Red Steel 2
3.We Cheer
4.Godfather: Black Hand Edition
5.House of the Dead: Overkill
6.Muramasa: Demon Blade
7.No More Heroes 2
8.Alien Syndrome
9.Monster Hunter Tri
10.Star Trek: Conquest

Games that just missed the cut on the third party list are...Goldeneye 007, Mini-Ninjas, Dawn of Discovery, Trauma Team, We Cheer 2...

There are many truly wonderful, uplifting, niche choices in the third party library just waiting to be played and appreciated for being well, games you're supposed to have FUN at!

Well Nintendo's own games are easy for me.

1.  Super Smash Bros Brawl
2.  Super Mario Galaxy 2
3.  Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
4.  Xenoblade
5.  Wario Land Shake
6.  Super Mario Galaxy
7.  Metroid Prime 3
8.  Sin and Punishment 2
9.  New Super Mario Bros Wii
10.  Donkey Kong Country Returns

I can't really do a third party list since I still have a good sized backlog of third party Wii games I haven't played yet, unlike Nintendo were I've played most of their Wii games I've wanted to except for Fire Emblem and The Last Story, but I don't see either of these games getting into my Nintendo top 10.

... Maybe the Wii library wasn't the most diverse (okay it wasn't) but ...

Objection! Wii had a wonderfully diverse library once you include third party releases - it just balanced that diversity with gaping holes in a few other genres.

...
1.Wii Music
...
Games that just missed the cut on the third party list are... Dawn of Discovery, ...
...

Wii Music: You're crazy!   ;)

Dawn of Discovery: At one point this game was on my list. Free play mode could make hours disappear in the blink of an eye with the "one more action" type of addictiveness so commonly seen with Civ-like games. Sadly, there are just too many good third party games to get everything I love on the list and Bit.Trip Complete nudged it out for the final spot. Easily one of Wii's best kept secrets.

My top 10 first party, not including New Play Controls:

1. Super Mario Galaxy 2
2. Super Mario Galaxy
3. Super Smash Bros Brawl
4. Xenoblade
5. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
6. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
7. Donkey Kong Country Returns
8. Super Paper Mario
9. New Super Mario Bros Wii
10. Metroid Prime 3

Runner Ups: Wii Sports, Mario Kart Wii, Wii Sports Resort, Kirby's Return to Dreamland, Kirby''s Epic Yarn.

Third party is damn near impossible:

1. Tatsunoko vs. Capcom
2. No More Heroes
3. Muramasa

That's all I've got =/

I'd assume it's a third-party game.  The game/IP is fully owned and developed by Capcom, and I believe Nintendo only handled published in the one region.  (Backing my assumption is the fact that Monster Hunter appeared in the staff top ten third party list.)

1st Party
1. Donkey Kong Country Returns
2. Super Mario Galaxy
3. Metroid Prime 3
4. New Super Mario Bros. Wii
5. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
6. Super Mario Galaxy 2
7. Mario Kart Wii
8. Metroid: Other M
9. Wii Play (if only for "Tanks!")
10. Super Smash Bros. Brawl

I'm surprised by how many Wii games I own but haven't completed which unfortunately affects their standing. For example, I'm like 15 stars in Super Mario Galaxy 2. I'm about an hour into The Last Story and Xenoblade Chronicles. They would probably be on there for sure. Super Smash Bros. Brawl almost didn't make it. I don't know; I didn't really enjoy it as much as I thought I would even though it's the one I wanted most on that list by far.

3rd Party
1. No More Heroes
2. Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition
3. Okami
4. Muramasa: The Demon Blade
5. Madworld
6. Lost in Shadow
7. No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle
8. A Boy and His Blob
9. House of the Dead: Overkill
10. Resident Evil: The Darksiders Chronicles

I didn't finish many of these games either.

I struggled with this too.

The Bit.Trip series was certainly a defining moment for WiiWare, but the retail collection provides an expanded and improved release at a solid price. In the end I decided that listing the definitive version was the way to go, regardless of which platform that release came out on. (It helped that I didn't own all of the WiiWare versions already.)
