It's Sega meets Capcom meets Namco Bandai, brought to you by Monolith Software.

Project X Zone is being developed by Monolith Software, according to the latest issue of Famitsu. The game, which is a tactical RPG crossover featuring characters from Sega, Capcom, and Namco Bandai, is expected to release on Nintendo 3DS in Japan this year.

The magazine also provided several gameplay details. The game will feature what is being called "Cross Active Battle System" and is set in a grid-based map. There will be be timing-based attacks which will allow your characters to perform special skills.

In addition, the game will feature character development allowing the learning of more skills as the game progresses.  Each character will support up to five skills, all of which can be individually leveled up. The game encourages you to use as many of your skills as possible, rather than sticking to one or two.

Project X Zone has no firm release date at the moment, but is expected to release in Japan before the end of 2012.

Monolith is now on my watch list.  If this gets decently good reviews, this will be a day one purchase.  Once I get my 3DS of course.  Weird though, Monolith belonged to Namco a few years back.  I wonder how a first party nintendo dev will work on a abnormal third party crossover.  Guess we'll just have to see.

This isn't really that big though.  Project X Zone is a sequel to the PS2 game, Namco X Capcom which was also made by Monolith Soft and the gameplay and look are very similar.  It's no surprise they're working on this game.  Plus Monolith Soft has made games for Namco on the DS even after Nintendo bought them.

Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier
Dragon Ball Z: Attack of the Saiyans
Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier EXCEED

All made by Monolith Soft for Namco after Nintendo bought them.  Even though Monolith Soft is a Nintendo studio now, they're still allowed to make games for Namco as long as the Namco games are for a Nintendo system.  Nintendo's done this with other studio's as well.  Brownie Brown made the London Life section in Professor Layton and the Last Specter as well as helped make Blue Dragon Plus for the DS.  Genius Sonority helped to make Dragon Quest Sword for the Wii.  Then there's Paon who developed the Klonoa remake on the Wii as well.

So this isn't really anything new for Nintendo to do.

i guess this kinda confirms that the game won't be ported over to another system seeing that a Nintendo owned company is working on this. but if plays like Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier, I'm definitely buying this.

Project X Zone is a sequel to the PS2 game, Namco X Capcom

No, it's not (http://andriasang.com/con0lq/project_x_zone_interview/). They are not related in any way. The specific mention: Tsukanaka mentioned Namco x Capcom, a previous crossover strategy RPG involving two of the parties. If the new game were a sequel to that, it might have been possible to use the company names in the game, sais Tsukanaka. However, because it's a totally new title, and it's a "project that realizes a dream crossover," they decided on the Project X Zone name.

Also, it's been known for several weeks that Monolith Soft was developing it.
