Wii This Summer? Today show just reported it!
« on: May 09, 2006, 02:33:47 AM »
I was watching NBC's Today a few minutes ago as I always do while getting ready for work. They did a small piece on the PlayStation 3/Next-Gen game consoles. I know that the press usually gets information prior to Nintendo press conference, or at least that's been the case in the past. Though it was briefly mentioned (the PS3 was the focus of the report), they reported that the Wii would be in stores "this summer". They then showed the dude from G4 (don't remember his name but he hosts "Attack of the Show" and mentioned that he thinks this will be a "three horse race" and nobody had expected that (which I interpret as he thinks Nintendo will be a huge factor this generation).

Since it was reported as speculation, I wonder if press received information from Nintendo and NBC was reporting a confirmed time frame?

I think an August, very-early September launch makes realistic sense at this point, considering what we've heard.

I don't think a June/July launch makes sense in the States.

Anyone have any idea what the international release plans are? I'm assuming us in Europe are expecting to have to wait until 2007?

June!

Imagine at the end of the conference, Reggie says "And you can have this in your home............. 3 weeks from today!

And the house comes down baby!

Here's a crazy idea:  Ya know how Nintendo likes to save on shipping costs by releasing multiple big-name games for different consoles at once (e.g. Resident Evil 4 and Minish Cap)?  What if the DS Lite and Wii were released simultaneously?  Just a fun thought.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

That's exactly what I thought when I heard "this Summer". It makes sense, but wouldn't releasing the Wii steal the thunder away from the DS Lite?

While a summer release would be cool, I highly doubt it would happen.  Final dev kits aren't out till june, 3rd party titles are looking kinda rough (Tony Hawk), and Zelda isn't out till the fall.

I guess we'll find out for sure in a few hours, though...

No. I received my 'Cube as a Christmas present in 2002 from some friends. I've only been in "Got Game" once (but liked the store), I don't really do South Street more than once a year now-a-days. If I do, it's to go to 611 or the Philadelphia Record Exchange.

Didn't a Nintendo representative just say "Q4 2006" like a week ago?

Well, if they launched in Summer there is no way they would have had neccessary hype to go for launch, so this is probably for the best.

Announcing the release date as June would have brought all the hype on though./
