New Yoshi Platformer Developed by Good-Feel Announced for Wii U
« on: January 23, 2013, 10:05:02 AM »

The first home console Yoshi game in 16 years is in a world of textiles.

A new 2D Yoshi platformer from Good-Feel, the studio behind Wario Land: Shake It and Kirby's Epic Yarn, was announced for Wii U at the most recent Nintendo Direct presentation.

This new game, referred to in press material as "Yarn Yoshi," is based around an arts and crafts aesthetic similar to the Nintendo 64 title Yoshi's Story, the last home console title to star the iconic green dinosaur. Stage environments consist of various textiles, while Yoshi and enemies, such as the Shy Guys, are made of yarn.

It has also been confirmed that Takashi Tezuka, who directed both Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Story, is heavily involved in the game's development as a supervisor.

Neal's going to give this game a 10 and everyone's going to mock him for it for years.

Have to say, I'm pretty dang excited for this.
This is where I would write something witty or funny if I had any ideas.

As i said it looks very, very raw.

There are like three or four art styles shown -- they probably haven't even chose one.

Hopefully Good Feel will deliver.

Slightly disappointed it's not painted 2d.

Looks good but, you know, that yarn look isn't so creative if it's used all the time.  People loved Kirby's Epic Yarn's look because it was unique and different, not so much because it was specifically yarn based.  I fear that they're turning a once original idea into a tired cliche.

I enjoyed all of Good-Feel games but always found the games a bit on the too easy side.  Hopefully there's more an a balance for everyone's skill level.

Completing levels 100% in Shake It! was pretty difficult. I never finished the game because of it.

I'm not terribly interested in this game. I never bought Epic Yarn because it looked too easy. Nintendo just showed off/announced almost 10 games I want more.

Greg Leahy, they listened to you, man!  You were always right that it should have been Yoshi's Epic Yarn, that his tongue was perfect for the game's "whip mechanic".  You are vindicated.

I still have not fished epic yarn so I don't know the later environments, but some of those other screen shots look so much more like Yoshi Story than Epic Yarn. Though they are very similar, in his full yarn mode it doesn't look exactly like Epic Yarn.

Weird that the connections to Epic Yarn seem so big. It even had those bead-gems. Not that I'm complaining, really. This game will looks gorgeous and it'll be fun.

Will there be eggs? That's my question. How close to previous Yoshi games will it be? Tezuka's involvement suggests it could be closer than indicated by the first footage, which did indeed look a lot like Kirby's Epic Yarn, but from a 2.5D perspective.

As a big fan of Yoshi's Story, I eagerly look forward to this game.

Hmm, I do agree with the above sentiment that it's a little weird to start a specific "yarn" sub brand. Wario Shake It was "hand drawn," Kirby's Epic Yarn was yarn/arts and crafts, so Yoshi should be something equally different/artistically interesting.

I had a secret hope that Pikmin 3 would turn out to be claymation styled (or clay captured or something), but this Yoshi game would seem to be the next best opportunity, especially since no one's tried it to my knowledge since the old Clayfighter days, and Wii U tech could assuredly power a stunning result, particularly with a 2.5D game.

Still, I think Yoshi' Story is aesthetically underrated, and I would be pleased with a game as tonally distinctive.
