Nintendo Serves Mario Tennis Aces on Switch
« on: January 11, 2018, 01:15:00 AM »

Camelot returns to make a new tennis game on Switch that features a story mode and more.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/46170/nintendo-serves-mario-tennis-aces-on-switch

Mario is making his sporting debut on Switch with Mario Tennis Aces.

Aces is being developed by Camelot, who have been responsible for most Mario sports games since the '90s. Unlike the last tennis release, the 2015 Wii U game Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash, Aces is set to contain a deeper experience with a story mode and boss battles.

The "new approach" to Mario Tennis will launch this spring.

So this isn’t a port of the Wii U game? Surprising. I’d consider picking this up eventually. Nice to see Nintendo rounding out Switch’s lineup with supplemental content like Mario Tennis Aces rather than depending on it during a light release schedule.

The last few Mario Tennis games have been so lackluster that I'm still skeptical even though it sounds like they're adding more stuff this time. Hopefully it ends up as a better effort this time.

The last console Mario Golf game we got was on the GameCube.  I don't really see how they can expand on Mario Tennis without resorting to even more lame gimmicks, so I'm not interested.

This one looks good to me! But what will the review taglines be this time?

Game, Set, Mario?
Gamers 15 - Mario love?
Mario causes a racket?
Mario takes you to court?
Waluigi win-bledon?

Hahaha perfect!

Or maybe if it feels unfinished they can do "Mario Tennis feels like it's stuck in Early Aces."

It's what all right thinking NWR readers wish! If Stan does review it, make sure to have an audio version of it as well! :)

I wouldn't be surprised if Ultra Smash was basically just a beta for this game.  They basically created the engine and HD assests to use then Nintendo rushed something out for the 2015 holiday just to have an extra game to help pad the Wii U's lineup that Fall but since they knew they had a new system on the horizon that they wanted to do better, had Camelot continue working with the engine and assets to create a much better product for the new system.

Even though that would have been kind of scummy on Nintendo's part for Ultra Smash, I hope this is the case since it means Aces has the potential to be pretty awesome since they'll have had over 2 years to develop this game using existing engine and assist, which should help give it a ton of content which has been the biggest problem with the last few Mario Tennis games.  The Story mode alone give me a lot of hope.

I have high(er) hopes for this. The announcer during the direct seemed to say all the right things but the New Play Control Gamecube version for the Wii, then the wack aspirin 3DS game, then the ultra crap Wii U game have really soured me on the series.

You notice how Nintendo has been much more lax about Mario's image recently? They used to be very strict about the type of clothes he could or could not wear and now he's fully decked out like a west side weenie tennis junky and even sports bridal gowns on occasion.

Seemed like before the only times you'd see Mario without his signature hat and/or overalls was seeing him as a baby, the OG Mario Golf and the Strikers series. Of course I'm just talking regular clothes and not all his animal/object costume transformation.

Yeah, this game seems to have more effort into it than Ultra Smash just by having the story mode. I've thought about buying Ultra Smash but it has just never seemed worth it. Maybe if I find a copy for $10 then I might get it but I really don't care if that ever happens or not. I'm not really a big tennis fan anyways so, like ForgottenPearl, I'd prefer that it was a different Mario Sports game being released.

Also, when I read the subtitle Aces, I can't help but think of Billy Bob Thornton as Lorne Malvo from Fargo Season One.

Whoever said, "Cheaters never win" must've never met Khushrenada.
