It still has some catching up to get to the sales of DS.

The Nintendo 3DS is currently outpacing Game Boy Advance sales in Japan.

Media Create, a Japanese sales tracker, reports that in its 154th week the Nintendo 3DS has sold around 15 million units. This is up from sales of the Game Boy Advance, which were at 11.64 million units at week 154.

Despite the Nintendo 3DS's success, is still far away from reaching Nintendo DS sales, however. The 3DS's predecessor sold 20.16 million units by its 154th week.

In related news: every single handheld and console, past, present, and future is and will always be short of reaching Nintendo DS sales in Japan.

Is this a bad thing?  The GBA was considered a success at the time but would those figures no longer be considered acceptable?  I know Nintendo missed their original 3DS projections for the fiscal year where those figures needed to make money or just outrageously unrealistic hopes on Nintendo's part.  I keep hearing conflicting reports on the 3DS with some saying it is selling well while other say it's in trouble.

Does anyone else think that it was in a way bad for Nintendo to have such success with both the DS and Wii at the same time?  It seems like both systems benefitted from a temporary casual gamer boom that died out and Nintendo seems dumbstruck on how to move forward.  The Wii U is an obvious disaster and the 3DS started off very rocky.  It seems they felt that following the same formula as before would recreate the same success but the circumstances are too different for that to occur.
