Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 146: Mario Party 9 Forever

FFVI came before Chrono Trigger, and Star Wars takes a lot from Japan and biblical themes.

FFVI has an awesome story, and Kefka is one of the cruelest villains ever, or at least for that period.

Sometimes I wonder what planet does Alex comes from...never played FFVI?, never seen Star Wars original trilogy?...was he born on the Himalayas? :p

I just wish it could be available on the WiiU VC.

Been listening for 200+ episodes, this is the first one I just had to stop listening to because I couldn't take it anymore. You guys need to ease up on all the negativity. I got thru about 80 minutes of it, and I'd say 70 minutes was complaining, 5 minutes positive on Nintendo games, 5 minutes positive on Rogue Legacy.

I get it, you all hate WiiU and are luke warm about 3DS. Online in WiiU is either absent/bad. Let's just not beat a dead horse, shall we?

Even Mario Land 2, which I think you guys liked, no one actually wanted to compliment it. Saying, it's "Weird as f***" and "an acid trip" and "they were crazy making this" aren't exactly complimenting a really fun game. And right before finishing talking about the game saying it's good doesn't count as being positive.

But whatever, this is the way the show has been trending the last year. Even Guilleme got in on the bashing this episode, he's usually the one positive guy.

Just for the record, I have been listening for almost 2 years, and to some extend, I agree with you. There are some episodes that one could say there were more positive than negative but it seems inevitable that some of the commentators are always ready to bring negativity, sarcasms, or be ironic towards Nintendo one way or another, is like it's permanently in their subconscious to bring some negativity in order to "spice up" the talk a bit.

My recommendation to some of the commentators: Just leave Nintendo and play something else and be happy. I mean, from my own experience, after the N64, I left Nintendo (never owned a handheld but had all the systems and lots of games till that moment), then I left to college and life kept me busy from gaming (in a good and fun way....specially with the women :) ). Then, after college, when my "body was ready" to play games again, PC-master race was dominating the conversation among my peers with the Battlefields, Call of Dutys, Counter-Strikes, Star Crafts, WoWs, and half-lifes. So I bought a powerful PC and had a blast, mostly with RTSs and FPSs.

It wasn't till the very end of the Wii-life that I happened to give it a try (I was also getting tired of the PC FPS orientated scene, let's call it, war and tear), and I kind of liked the motion controls. So I ended up buying a used Wii, and had a blast (as a PC master race guy, I would never judge a console by its graphics, cause nothing compares to PC). I couldn't believe I miss the master pieces of Metroid Prime and Super Mario Galaxys, I felt so good that when I bought a Wii, Xenoblade Chronicles was launching!...I loved to have access to many of the old games I missed or played a decade or so ago!

I don't care about online that much on consoles, I'm very competitive online, and don't like any kind of assistance from the computer, like many online gamers get on consoles (cod players on the xbox have to admit that, without aim assist, their battles would be very slow and inaccurate....instead ppl who play with the PC-mouse or wii-motes need little or no assistance)...so I will never be on the side of the criticism about online, but I understand it, as new generations have it by default, and ppl get used to things quickly and miss them quickly if they don't have it.

Anyways I'm losing my train of thought here. What I mean is, if you think Nintendo has lost its way, and I bet some ppl have been thinking this for a while now, just move on!....once you are 5, 10 years away, you will probably have a blast with whatever console Nintendo makes later. They are here to stay, they are a resilient and sustainable company. They don't live by the edge of massive sales. They will be here, waiting for you years later, when you are willing to give them a second chance. Don't ruin the conversation for people who genuinely are positive and (mostly) happy with the current Nintendo!

Cybernator...yeah....great (but short) game!....finally a month in which I can spend my money!

29
I think this game is one of those rare SNES games (next to the original Star Fox) that has aged pretty bad....it looks awful, not like SNES SMW, TLOZALTTP, Super Metroid, Super Mario RPG, etc. So no purchase for me...although I heard Cybernator is coming....sweet!

1.- About the N64 controller save cards...remember that Sony was doing the same...it looks like on that specific period of time, everyone was thinking about transportable saved data.
For PS there was no other way of keeping saves because of optical format.

But both Sony and Nintendo used the excuse of portability as an asset. If Sony didn't want to allow flexibility for the saved data, they would have included a built-in memory card/hdd on the PS, or just one big slot for one big memory card that would store all the data. I still think that around that time, both companies saw the flexibility of having your own memory card with saved data as a cool think to have.

3.- I agree that the WiiU Gamepad lacks of analog buttons for racing games. I also wanna point out that for games where you need to press buttons and use the d-pad constantly and fast, like some hardcore platform games, I think the weight ends up affecting the gameplay time. My hand feel very tired after 1/2 an hour of playing platform games, like DKC TF, Rayman Legends, etc. Also, if you introduce new controller ideas, you should always care about those consumers that don't necessarily will like the idea. Like what happened with the the wii-remote.

2.- WiiU Sports: Man, I'm happy with my WiiU, and usually I've defended Nintendo in the past, when they don't put that much effort in online, but now it's getting difficult to defend them. I mean, if you go for online, aim for perfection, as Nintendo usually goes, for gameplay. There have been several Nintendo games that, when offering online, are not polished enough. I can't understand the difficulty to play with friends, and make parties online, and then stick with those friend during the whole game!....so please Nintendo, time to improve your game....if you offer online, offer the best possible option. Anyeays WiiU sports looks terrible and absolutly no effort of a game....very low standards for such a company that supposes to have the "seal of quality".

Ready for a 3DS update?

Hell YES!!!

I have never been a handheld gamer, although it has always caught my curiosity.

However, since Nintendo started to release great 3DS titles couple of years ago, I have been thinking to buy one.

However, to me, handheld gaming requires TWO MUSTS: Portability and great battery life. PERIOD.

If none or just one of those conditions are set, then I am not buying

Don't care too much about the price, but always helps....

I can't understand how can someone buy handhelds to play them at home, I can't understand the mentality towards Sony handhelds, who look sexy but anything portable an playable while traveling mid to long distances, also you need fairly "indestructible" handhelds if you want to carry them on your pocket or backpack, tech ready to be squeezed, pushed and smashed!...and that calls NINTENDO, all over the place.

If Nintendo releases a "lite" (more compact than the original) version of the 3DS with better battery life than the original 3ds (and hopefully better than the XL), then I'm buying automatically!...and lots of games with it!......I was hoping for a big announcement like that this past E3 but nothing....sigh...I will have to keep waiting!...and btw I ain't buying that freak of nature called 2DS!

TalkBack / Re: No Wii U or 3DS Games from Ubisoft at E3 2014
« on: May 23, 2014, 08:15:18 AM »
Terrible news...no one can say they didn't try.

And the 3DS thing...western devs have shown very little support since day one.

3DS survives out of Nintendo games and Japanese 3rd parties....it's amazing how powerful Nintendo franchises are....can't imagine Sony or MS surviving out of their own games with little or no 3rd party support.

But yeah....I don't see this thing changing even if they WiiU sales improve. I bet that Ubi has data confirming once again what everybody knows....that most of Nintendo console owners spend money on Nintendo games 1st, and then, if there are some money left, buy 3rd parties...but sometimes those owners have other consoles and buy 3rd parties for the other consoles.

I mean there is no game like ZombiU in the other consoles....that game should have sale pretty good....but tanked.

TalkBack / Re: Second Opinion: Mario Kart 8 Review

For real, 7.5 means the game is GOOD!  When did the scale for video game reviews become "anything below an 8.5 means it's a shitty game"?

You're kidding right?...the grade inflation is a pandemic that starts in academia but spreads to almost every other field, including reviews. In fact it is hard to discard outliers when so many people give hundreds or tens to a game.

I think that, by now, a game in the 70s is great as you said, a different issue is of the game is worth buying, e.g., gamers telling the developers that they did a good job and should keep up the good work. In fact from reading Daan and Neal reviews I can notice their disappointment on the series, and I would feel compelled to ask them not to buy the game, so if many more follow, the developers will be forced to learn from the mistakes and hopefully change for good.

But hey, I'm buying given the overwhelmed good reviews that are telling me to buy, so in a way Nintendo will keep doing the same if many people buy the game. And my guess is that given the popularity of the franchise and the free game coming with the purchase before the end of July this game will sell lots no matter what...what a cheap way to bump your sales Nintendo! sigh.

TalkBack / Re: Second Opinion: Mario Kart 8 Review

I understand opinions may be different to mine, but that's why, being a numbers guy myself, I wait till a number of reviews are around and use statistics to base my opinion before buying a game (yeah, I'm one of those who decide to purchase based on scores cause I have little time and patience to try the game at a store or borrow it, or to watch endless youtube videos).

I thank Daan to score this game the exact same way as Neal so I can discard both scores as outliers.

As many of you know, in most judged sports, the highest and lowers scores are discarded, and the final score is an average or the idea, the truncated mean, of what the real score may be.

So, since most of reviews around the world have been in the top 80s and 90s, this game is totally good and worth buying at launch. Having said so, a game in the 70s to me is not worth buying at launch, although they are definitely worth playing, so I take that, for Neal and Daan this game would be good to rent, borrow, or get on a sale?...I wish they can answer that. Does a score reflect if one should invest time playing/buying a game?...to me it should...even if I've never heard of game, a score should get me closer to how much I will enjoy the game.

p.s.: For those who would argue that, one should read every review...pfff...almost every jorunalist out there think that is some kind of Ernest Heminway or something....they write pages and pages of analysis and blabla. Everyone takes their job "seriously" so to me Neal, Dan, and the rest of the dozens of journalists out there are no better/worst than anyone else. I respect them...but give me my damn score fast so I can run stats on them as quick as possible!

hehehe... it looks like someone sucks at SMB3!!!!

Man I mastered that game back as a kid, I used to play video games through my teens almost 24/7 so I was pretty precise controlling even the toughest platformers, Ninja Gaiden's included!

As with most of things in life, practice makes you better, are you willing to play that much to master it?...after one masters the NES platformers, you feel you can master any platformer of this generation. Maybe getting used to hand holding too much?...well I recommend yo Kirby then!...hehehe, no hand holding needed...

To be honest I have not played the NES games in more almost a decade, but as with swimming and cycling I'm still pretty confident that, if I mastered something back in the day, today I'm still pretty decent at it even if I take long brakes without playing.

Damn John I will probably have to buy one of these games on the VC and see if they are so annoying as you say. I remembered I beat SMB3 in a week without finding all the secret areas etc., but still.

I remember that I was also frustrated with the question box mechanics but trust me there is one way to predict...I think it has to do with be facing the direction you want the item to fly. I think...

OMG another one who never learned how to blast turn (tapping the accelerator quickly at every curve) !...it's even written on the manual!!!!

Well I forgive you if you rented it or borrowed it!...besides it's pretty common...look at miiverse comments!

Blast turn is CRUCIAL to beat this game at Expert and Master levels, I congratulate you if you finish the other easier difficulties with just sliding...omg that's so ridiculously difficult!

Anyways blast turn damages my thumb, specially now that am getting old...sigh

about the WiiU release date: They are not just maximizing sales of 3DS, but also Nintendo has little or no titles coming on the winter/end of the year for the WiiU, compared to PS4/XBOX One. So everything you guys say applies, AND the fact that they need a game to sell for Christmas...is clear that X is not coming in 2014, at least in the West.

44
I'd say, add voice chat before and after matches, and leave the Morse code for during matches....those who master it may gain an strategic advantage!

My two cents about this.

Some huge amounts of money have to be coming from MS & Sony so the game are not ported to PS3/360...it is a bad economic policy not to sell those game on a large, very large install base. This games cost lost of money to produce...my guess is that the actual game will not be great graphical jump....only the cgi will be awesome but the actual game engine...I don't think so.

It could also happen that, as we have seen with games made for Vita and 3DS, back in the shadows the devs already know that they will eventually port the games to other platforms, but, they will originally will develop the games in the next gen console engines. So they keep this ideas quiet till launching date and later they release the ports.

As I said, there is simple too much money to be made in the old gen....and if the game goes old gen, the WiiU still has a chance.

Hard-copy all the way!

1- I have a brother who also owns a WiiU. So we both talk to each and buy different games, with the exemptions of those ones where we can play multiplayer, specially co-op. So it's a no brainier we can exchange games whenever we see each other.

2.- There are always better sales and discounts, so far, of CDs than eshop games...if sometime in the future eshop becomes something like, say, steam, maybe just then I will fully commit. but as I said in # 1, I won't be able to exchange games with my brother, but if eshop games have huge discounts, then we can both buy more games!

3.- As the guy in 1st post said, I can always sell my games...I have been very successful selling my used games, I usually know when and how to sell them. I don't sell many games, as I am very picky and buy always the best, but year franchises like Call of Duty get useless quite fast as the new releases come so I sell them after a year or so.

I have 12 WiiU CDs so far and plan to buy more. I only buy digitally VC games and indies. And I have make the most of my purchases by buying most of my games at a discount.

48
Wish they'd release some of their 2nd and 3rd tier first party VC games. Don't we all own all of these games by now, or at least the ones we want? Come on Nintendo. You have a huge library of first party titles, get them on the systems!

for 3rd party games, is out of 3rd party developers to release those games...maybe Ninty can be more proactive...but I don't think they will offer some money or more share coming from the purchases.

I've spent most of gaming life between PC and Nintendo consoles. I do agree that playing competitive FPS on DAs feels unatural, all since N64's Golden Eye aim assist I felt that. It's ok for playing solo, campaign FPSs, but for competition, aim assist just suck. That's why I'm thankful for the Wii-remote, I'm pretty good in COD games on Nintendo consoles, thanks to the wiimote!
