Nintendo Gaming / RE: Take Two seeks MLB exclusivity
« on: January 24, 2005, 06:07:49 PM »
Take Two screwed EA without elminating competiton. First parties can still use the MLBPA license. Third parties are prohibited. I like that. It still allows for competiting games and screws EA. Perfect solution.

Well I'm boycotting EA. It sucks for me because I was really looking forward to Fight Night 2...but I just can't support them in good conscience.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Mortal Kombat Deception coming to cube!
« on: January 12, 2005, 12:30:57 PM »
I had Deadly Alliance for Gamecube and I have Deception for X-box. I had a much easier time pulling of combos on the GC. The can't get a decent configuration on X-box. The default setup stinks IMO. I having the analog trigger act as your style switch button doens't fly with me. I ended up making the white button my style switch button. I have a controller with the original X-box button configuration its works better but the placement of the white and black buttons is awkward no matter what X-Box controller design you have.

LOL Zelos, we are referring to the Arena Football League. Not Australian Rules Football. I can understand the mistake though. This is all about EA fearing the ESPN/SEGA alliance IMO.

They only did this to keep any possible competitors from using the AFL as a fall back since they snapped up the NFL license. Now they have exclusivity on the AFL and NFL. Is the CFL next?

The PSP is getting crushed and frankly I'm loving it. By the time the PSP hits hour shores the DS should have an advantage of over 3 million or so. I love seeing Sony fail.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:why did nintendo pull a sony on PURPOSE
« on: November 23, 2004, 05:55:25 PM »
On purpose!? Think about what you were saying. The PSP launches 4 months after the DS in the US and only 10 days after the DS in Japan. Nintendo wants to sell as many DS's as possible to get as big a lead over the PSP as soon as possible. Intentionally shorting themselves wouldn't make any sense.

Well Gamespot had to stop taking pre-orders and told some people that they would'n't be able to fill their orders. Isn't EB about cut off their preorders as well?

Wow if Nintendo can manage to meet demand they will start out with a 3 million to 500,000 lead over PSP. Thats a significant userbase advantage that would ensure they maintain the early 3rd party support lead. Of course I seriously think that they need more than a 1 million units in the US. I think Nintendo will easily exceed there 4 million units sold projection for the fiscal year. If they can meet demand they may be able to ship and sell 6 million plus.

Since the PSP doesn't hit the US until next year, I don't expect any price changes from Nintendo. They may drop the price $20 around PSP launch but given Sony's low shipment numbers and the DS' sales and high shipment numbers...I seriously doubt it.

Excellent observation Bill. Its the classic..."the enemy of my enemy is my friend stance" MS is right though. Sony is really gonna have to energy and time on PSP if they hope to unseat Nintendo in the handheld market. The more time they spend on PSP the more vulnerable they will be to Xenon and Revolution. At least in the US, the X-box has been beating the PS2 for the last 6 months or so.

When you makes the worlds best titles and can't even post 2nd place in world wides sales, It shows that Nintendo as company is failing inspite of its quality software.

It isn't just that Nintendo is still profitable. They are the *most* profitable as well. Even with all of Sony's tens of millions of Playstations sold, they are moving a lot more money around, but the bottom like is still not as strong as Nintendo's.  Popularity is important, but profitability is what keeps a company alive. As "minimized" as Nintendo appears in the marketplace, of course there is room for a lot of improvement, but it's also hard to argue with success.

My feeling about them is, "OK, they've done good. Now do great."

I for one have been quite energized by Nintendo since E3. The DS has momentum. Zelda will likely sell a good load of new consoles in the system's late cycle, and if the DS is any hint at Revolution, I think they will have a system much more competitive than GameCube. I'm just one person, but I've been pretty hard to impress lately. I think the sleeping giant is waking up.

If anybody expects Nintendo to suddenly be a Sony ass-kicker tomorrow, they're going to be disappointed. There's simply not much point in trying to be so aggressive this late in GameCube's life. At this point it is all about the people looking for cheap fun. There's less profit to be had going forward than there was the last 3 years.

I think the "new" Nintendo is showing itself in the DS. They are going to try to fend off the PSP to the death to keep their monopoly. They also appear to be working on some aggressive plans for Revolution. It's certainly going to be pretty close in spec to Xbox2, and it will have a hell of a much more timely launch. The only question to me, really, is 3rd party support. They've been given general guidelines, but there probably won't be actual dev kits distributed to them until next year.

Yes but their userbase has been shrinking with each generation. Which means they sell less games, which mean they make less money. Do you think EA would sell more games than Nintendo if the GC userbase was comparable to the PS2? Most likely not. If they continue to let the userbase for their consoles decline they will eventually not be able to make a profit.

TalkBack / RE:Resident Evil 4 Not GC Exclusive
« on: November 01, 2004, 05:58:05 PM »
I'm surprised by all the Mikami hatred. This obviously came from higher up. In the last few years Capcom has lost a few top producers because of them butting heads with management. Besides this is all a moot point anyway. If this were a SNES vs. Genesis situation from the early 90s it would be major. In the US at least Nintendo and Sega were in a dead heat. The GC is third place worldwide and its not going to catch X-box. In the US the X-box is outselling the PS2 the GC isn't even in the equation. Nintendo is going to do all it can to provide content until the Revolution arrives. Nintendo made some blunders, MS took advantage and here we are. We can only hope that "perceived" aggressive streak Nintendo is on with DS continues and carrys on to all there future products. I'm still a big Capcom fan and I'm still gonna by RE4.

I have my DS reserved. That stated as big of a Nintendo fan as I am. I can see the writing on the wall. No I'm not talking about Nintendo going belly up. I'm talking about not being factor. Outside of the portable market Nintendo has no mindshare. Its always do you have a PS2 or X-box. Articles talking about the gaming market only mention Nintendo in passing if at all. Although the PS2 is well in front, right the X-box has the most mindshare. This will help them in the next generation. Nintendo has virtually no mindshare and what little it does have is negative. Looking at the situation we should be glad that Capcom has done what it has. Capcom isn't going to do what it did with Dreamcast. They hedged there bets a bit with GC, saw similar trends and made the decision that best suited them. Given the predicament that Japanese developers are in, Capcom has to do what it can to survive. With Western developers dominating the market, having your bread and butter franchise on the 3rd place console isn't going to help your standing.

I'm hardly some expert and won't pretend to be. Nintendo know what to do and honestly I never thought I'd say this but the PSP maybe the best thing to happen to Nintendo. They can't afford to be conservative while they ranking dough from the portable market. They have to be aggressive. Now the Nintendo that has been running its portable division will be running the whole company. The portable side of Nintendo always had that killer instinct....seemed to take pride in the number of competitor they could destroy. Now they seem to be even more aggressive. Thats makes me happy. Sony and its PSP have seemed to wake the sleeping giant. All I can say is that its about damned time.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:IGN-Cube's on another Nintendo-rant
« on: October 31, 2004, 09:19:05 AM »
Hmmm I'm a huge Nintendo fan but this "they are last but they are still making profits argument" is getting old and its highly shortsighted. Nintendo makes a butt load of money of their software sales. As their marketshare shrinks they have fewer customers to sell their software to. If Nintendo continues on its current path they will go out of business. That stated, the DS gives me a renewed confidence in Nintendo. They seem to finally get it when it comes to marketing and the redesign of the DS. When similar concerns where raised about the look of the Gamecube, Nintendo turned a blind eye to an obvious error. I mean Nintendo did a lot of things with GC that we all knew were mistakes. I mean hindsight is 20/20 but the color of the GC, lack of buttons on the GC controller, and pathetic memory card size where obvious errors that required no hindsight.

I don't understand the view of "but hey they are still making a profit." Yes its the silver lining to darc cloud of Nintendo's situation but that doens't make the situation okay. Look at the software sales of Nintendo's top titles. Now imagine what they'd be if GC's sales were just double what they are now world wide. When you makes the worlds best titles and can't even post 2nd place in world wides sales, It shows that Nintendo as company is failing inspite of its quality software. Don't even get me started on its stance on on-line gaming. Oh and I'm not going to say what you think. I don't care if Nintendo makes on-line games themselves but that doesn't mean you should inhibit 3rd parties from making on-line games if desire too. I mean remember how Sega wanted PSO to be a launch title for GC? Well Nintendo dragged there asses on deliver the necessary tools for online software development so it put Sega behind. Oh it doesn't end there though. In addition to that, Nintendo dragged there feet on making modem and broadband adapters available. Now I sure other 3rd party developers saw this...I mean Sega pratically had to beg and plead with Nintendo. Thats not good and thats why we don't have on-line titles for GC.

Nintendo was a very aggressive company during they're rise. During they decline they became conservative....instead of trying to gain market share they seemed to be trying to hold on to market share. They appear to be very aggressive with DS so far and I hope they continue this stance and bring it to Revolution as well. I hate to have to choose between MS and Sony for my gaming needs.

Nintendo can't win it seems. They put out an ad targeting older games and people are complaining. They put out kid friendly ads people start complaining. Jeez....I mean this type ad is funny to me. It doesn't matter how they advertise to me...well except that terrible Mario Sunshine TV ad. Nintendo needs to pull in mainstream gamers if they hope to quelch the PSP hype....I say more power to them.

Sony pulled the same crap with Gran Turismo 2. They release a buggy game minus 4 of tracks to get it out by Christmas. Then after the "unexpected" complaints they released a bug free version and gamers that bought the buggy version could send end their copies and Sony send them back the "fixed" game. The game never did get the 4 tracks they took out. All they did was fix the bugs and the made the game say 100% complete when obtained all the available vehicles and tracks. The buggy version only let you get 97% or so. Anyway I'm not surprised by anything Sony does.

I've seen pics of it and I can't believe how small it is. Its not much bigger than the PS2 DVD cases. I mean if you stake two of them on top of each other....that seems about the size of it. Its funny, a friend and I were discussion how is the hard drive gonna fit and they canned support for it already. I mean isn't the FFXI expansion pack coming out after the new non HDD supporting PS2?

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Soul Calibur
« on: September 22, 2004, 06:43:20 PM »
You guys are overlooking one major factor. Resolution. A DS version of Soul Calibur would be rendered in 256x192 versus 640x480 for DC. The DS version wouldn't have to use as high a level of textures, probably could get away with no Anti-Aliasing etc. etc. Would it look as good as the DC version probably not? My guess is it would look mid way in between an N64 and DC title graphically. Then again MP: Hunters looks a damn near DC quality. Also I have NFS: Underground for GBA and while the game looks a bit jaggy on GBA...its 10 times as muddy on my GBA Player. Its kind of like how shrinking a screenshot makes it look sharper than it is. The much lower resolution will allow Soul Calibur DS to come much closer to the Dreamcast version than would be possible if say the DS had the render the game on a TV at 640x480.

NO. Never again. Never mention "Square" and "good" when discussing recent RPG's from now on.

Square died after FFVII... their only strong point now is eye candy. I don't want them anywhere NEAR Nintendo franchises.

Well IMO Square died with FF7. I really hated that game. I mean they finally made another FF game I like in FFX and then turn around put FFX-2....blech. The sad thing about FFX-2 was that it actually had a good battle system.

As far as a Zelda RPG, I've been thinking about this forever. I would love to see it come to fruition. I think a Zelda RPG, done by the Tales of Symphonia team would be excellent. No random battles and an action based battle system. Enough action for the RPG hating Zelda fans and an excellent system for those who like traditional RPGs.

Speaking of X-box I don't see them doing a X-box version of the controller. Since my PS2 went kaput and I refuse to buy another....I was hoping that either the game would pop up on GC or they would make a similar controller for X-box. Seems that neither will be occurring.

BTW The only thing Special about Special Championship Edition was that it blew. Oh and Turbo SNES contained both Turbo SF2 and CE.
