Disney Shuts Down LucasArts Internal Development
« on: April 03, 2013, 05:53:08 PM »

The mouse house wants it to license games instead.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33738

LucasArts will no  longer be internally developing games after changes made by its owner, The Walt Disney Company.

A statement released by Disney reveals LucasArts will not be developing games, and instead will be licensing them in order to work on "minimizing the company's risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games." This shift is also the cause of layoffs happening today at LucasArts.

Since Disney's purchase of Lucasfilm many changes have been made, along with this move, the TV series Star Wars: The Clone Wars had also been cancelled earlier in the year.

So I suppose I can finally give up my dreams of a Rebel Assault 3.

You never like to hear of people losing their jobs, but now outside studios will have a chance to bid on licenses to make Star Wars games, and we should (theoretically) start seeing strong titles.  The Force Unleashed titles were okay, but imagine what it could of been in the hands of Crystal Dynamics or Naughty Dog instead.  What about a Criterion-developed Pod Racer?  I'm excited to see what they can do in the run up to the new trilogy.

I was kind of thinking the same thing Neifirst, but it still sucks to see all those jobs go.  Good luck to them!

1313 was going to be a Boba Fett game according to Kotaku.

If Nintendo wants to strengthen their Western development presence, there's a whole bunch of people who are looking for jobs. Retro Studios San Fransisco? Jay Kay lawl.
