General Gaming / RE:PS3 Estimated at $400
« on: July 08, 2005, 10:55:58 AM »
I agree with Spak-Spang, $400 dollars is still a lot of money, especially as computer prices keep getting lower and lower.  One could probably even buy a budget computer with monitor for around that price.  Casual gamers, with possible exeption to the few rich ones, IMO aren't going to drop that much cash for something they won't put a lot of time into.  Also, as Microsoft and Sony are attempting to put all kinds of extra features into their systems, the added complexity will turn a lot of people away.  The simplicity (hopefully?) of the Revolution should draw crowds of people who are either:
1.) On restricted/real-world budgets
2.) Scared away from the complexity of the other systems.

In addition, b/c you can play NES, SNES and N64 games on Revolution, games which, for the most part, are much more simple (and cheaper), will only serve to reinforce those 2 points.

I see the Xbox 360, (assuming that PS3 retails for 400 and Xbox 360 for 300) being sort of the middle-man in the  next iteration of the console wars.  With probably? inbetween graphical quality and inbetween price of Revolution and PS3.  The fact that Revolution launches so much later than the 360 could even negate the graphical difference between the two.

In my opinion, there are just too many things to go wrong with the PS3 and the Xbox 360 due to all of the crap that their respective companies are/are going to cram in their respective consoles.  I'll take a simple system that plays games and dvds with a revolutionary controller, thank you very much.

I've unlocked a couple of planets, got (i think) all of the items unlocked and MANY songs unlocked.  However, I have never seen any rare metals to fuse.  I'm not even entirely sure what the heck a rare metal is, or what it fuses into.  Anyone?

General Gaming / PS3 Estimated at $400
« on: June 29, 2005, 05:00:40 AM »
Hey, I just read an article that said Merril Lynch released its estimates for how much PS3 would cost, as well as how much Xbox360 would cost.

They said that PS3 would retail for about 400 dollars, and the system itself would cost approx 500 dollars to make.  It notes that the disc drive, the processor and graphics card each costing over 100 dollars to make.

Est. price for the 360 is $299.

All i gotta say about the price for PS3 is...ouch.

After playing most of the games mentioned so far in this thread, I'd have to say that the New Super Mario Bro's is my most anticipated title, followed of course by Mario Kart.  Meteos is already a done deal, pre-ordered from EB and it arrives tomorrow. :-)

Still really waiting for a good strategy and RPG...we'll see how Lunar and Age of Empires turn out.

P.S.  MrMojoRising: we don't mention THAT game, ever!  **shudders**

I think its supposed to be a play off of the word "Meteor", so you figure how you pronounce "meteor" and instead of having an "r" at the end, you have an "s".

If the E3 demo is any indication, the game is actually quite difficult.  Granted, I may have been playing a level that isn't reached until late in the game (it had about 4 weapons), I'm not really sure.  But I died about 5 times in 2 minutes of gameplay and I wasn't even being distracted by any booth babes.  If you're worried its going to be too easy, don't be.

I just had an idea (as amazing as that is).  I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and say that those pictures are indeed of the revolution controller.  However, link one is too dark to really show anything at all on the face of the controller except what might be 2 shoulder(ish)-type buttons.  There may be other buttons on the face, its simply too dark to tell.

As far as image 2 goes, it, assuming again that it is the real revolution controller, it looks as if it would be the BOTTOM of the controller.  Which is why there are no visible buttons.  It kind of makes sense too.  Image 1 is the top, image 2 is the bottom which lets people get an idea of what the entire controller looks like.

Just a thought.  I could be wrong, and those images could be (probably are?) fake.

IGN DS just updated with a review of Goldeneye: RA, in summation they said that it was sloppy and gave it a 6.5/10

http://ds.ign.com/articles/624/624723p1.html

Thats the address if you want to read it.  Have fun.  Wait for Metroid for a FPS, get Kirby for action/adventure and Meteos for Puzzle/Action.

www.gamesindustry.biz  has another leaked set of Revolution specs.

You can check that out if you want, but I'm pretty sure that they aren't real either.  Unless something with some credibility comes out, we're better off waiting for Nov/Dec when Nintendo makes official announcements regarding hardware, controllers, software, online details, DVD playback and DS support.  And anything else they have hidden up their sleeves.
(Come on Nintendo Lightgun!  I want Duck Hunt back!)

When I tried to get there, the pages showed a Quicktime logo, as if it was trying to load a video or quicktime picture and then blank.  Nothing.  On any page. ( i only tried 2 or 3 pages before giving up).

Anyone manage to save anything that was on those pages? or remember enough to give decent descriptions?

« on: June 13, 2005, 08:28:48 AM »
I just checked over at 1up.com and apparently they have a preview done from the full version of the game.  They said that controls are now fully map-able, including touch screen use, but that they played through over 40% of the game in something like 2 hours.  So we've moved from possible control problems to a short single player game.

The shining beacon though is that apparently it supports single cart play, and is 2-8 players.  It also supports multi-cart play and I dont know what the difference is between the two as far as levels, characters, options, etc.. go.

I haven't seen any actual reviews out, but give it a few days and at least we should get some reader reviews if nothing more "professional".

Btw, as a sidenote Kirby:CC has gotten really great reviews, generally 9/10's

I played it for a few seconds at E3, graphics were sort of bleh.  It really didn't offer a lot to hold my attention.  Then again, maybe if I had tried it from the beginning and actually spent some time with it, who knows.  I heard that there were some issues with them not offering different control types or something like that.  There's gotta be a review of it somewhere, I'll look around.

Personally, I don't have a HD-TV but even if I did, it wouldn't stop me from buying Revolution, for one simple reason.

-Games

Nintendo is built upon releasing the highest quality games found on any system.  I'm going to buy Revolution and Smash Brothers Online BECAUSE its Smash Brothers Online and not because it has a few more lines of resolution in it.  I'm going to buy Mario, Zelda, Metroid and maybe even Donkey Kong because of their history of being great games.

Nintendo is all about games, and as long as they stick with that, they'll still have legions of fans, including myself.

If I remember correctly, Xbox didn't come playing DVD movies as a standard because of licensing issues despite the console being able to play games written on DVDs for free.  I believe its like 20 bucks or something in order for a product to be able to play DVD movies because of licensing or royalties or something like that.  Therefore, if Nintendo was trying to keep costs down, which they ALWAYS are, DVD-playback may not be a Revolution standard.  They (Nintendo?) had mentioned that an add on for dvd movies would be possible, and the above reasons are why.

Personally, I'm expecting a Revolution with no DVD movie playback built in, but something similar to Xbox where you could spend 20-30 bucks to get a remote and some very small add-on device to enable it to play movies.  However, even including a remote for DVD playback may be optional as you could possibly use your DS.

Touch screen remote anyone?

Does anyone know what (or if?) there is an MSRP for this game? MSRP: being Manufacturer's suggested retail price.  I was wondering b/c EBGames.com has it for $30.00 and Gamestop.com has it for $35.00  However, I realize that it hasn't come out yet and was wondering if anyone knew the official price.  I plan on buying it on launch day and if i can save 5 (or more) bucks, then thats (nearly) lunch or dinner for me.

P.S. Buy this game.  Its good.

I played it a bit at E3, not very long, just a few minutes and it seemed like a decent title, but it didn't exactly seem as awe-inspiring and awesome as when I played the New Super Mario Bros or even Meteos.  If it becomes a playable demo at my local EB I'll give it another shot, but I doubt I'll be looking to buy Kirby, instead I'd rather save up my hard earned pennies for the *REALLY* good games that are coming out in the next few months.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Mario 64 as a pack-in title?
« on: June 08, 2005, 10:51:39 AM »
Ian, gotta disagree with you about having Polarium as a pack-in.  Nintendo would probably want to showcase the graphical prowess of the DS just a little bit more than what Polarium shows.  In addition, i think that Polarium is kind of a niche game whereas the vast majority of everyone loves Mario.  People will say, "woopy do, the DS comes with some weird crappy looking puzzle game I've never heard of" versus "Wow, Mario comes with the DS now, I loved that game for N64 and wait, it has MORE stars AND mini-games AND wireless multi-player?  Wow, the DS is great!"

Okay, so maybe a little far-fetched, but I think you get the idea.  Mario sells systems.  Polarium doesn't.

(Btw, I own and enjoy both Mario 64 DS and Polarium)

Mario has "courses" however, they may or may not be linear.  In some Mario games, there are multiple ways to solve the same puzzle, even though they may not be terribly different.  Also, often you can choose which levels you want to play.  Finally, if you remember Super Mario World (SNES) there was up to 3 ways to complete some of the levels.

I wouldn't really call Sonic or Mario "linear".

There's one game missing that I really want, I don't remember who published it or developed it, or the chances of it coming to Revolution, but it was called "EVO: The Search for Eden" and it was an action RPG where you started out as a fish and had to evolve yourself as a fish, then an amphibian, reptile, etc...  It was a TON of fun.   I think im going to go look up info on it now. lol.

Some other game has the title as Blah: Dragon Song.  (I dont remember what the Blah is)  Dragon Song of course being abbreviated to DS.

If that game list is true, even if half of it is true.....*tear*.  Its just too beautiful for words.  If half of that list is true then good luck getting a Revolution as they're going to be flying off the shelves faster than excited mexican jumping beans!

However, I'm going to have to find time to stop playing Mario World, Mario RPG, and Link to the Past to play the glorious new Revolution games (i.e. Online Smash Brothers!!).

Thank you Nintendo! (If that list is true)

KDR, I don't know what you know about planes, but if you could use a DS to cause a plane to crash, I think that we would have seen it done by now.  Also, if you read the news, you'll know that even the ban on cell phones is under review by the FAA because they've been finding that cell phones don't do a darn thing against plane communications, navigation or anything else.  Hell, have you ever been on a plane with phones installed in the seats, they're all electronic and send out signals, do you think that they're turned off during take off and landing? Nope.  Oh, and while I'm not an expert in these matters, my father is a private pilot who owns his own plane, and these are his words, not mine.

Anyway, enough of that little rant.

I completely agree Silks.  When I went to E3, me and one of my friends had a DS and another friend had a PSP.  The friend w/ the PSP rarely turned his on, and when he did it was to play single player games.  However, the DS provided literally hours of enjoyment while we were in lines, or at the download station.

As far as meteos specifically goes, does anyone have any information about if it is just 2 player, or if it supports more than 2 players?  I've read a bit about it in addition to playing the demo, and I really can't recall what the multiplayer features are in the full game.

As far as I know, yes, it is on track for release this month.  However, being the federal-law violator that I am (turn off all electronic devices while the aircraft takes off and lands my ass), I never turned my DS off after downloading the Meteos demo at E3.  I still have it on there.

Multiplayer: I played versus a friend of mine, an asian kid who goes to CalTech, I got owned every time, except I think once.  Its a ton of fun.  The E3 demo supported 1v1 play so long as both people had a copy of the meteos demo.  However, when I was looking at it, it looked like there was room for 4 people to join a game on the multiplayer screen.  I really dont know if that was just my impression or if it really does support more than 1v1 multiplayer.

The multiplayer works kind of like tetris does I suppose.  When you clear out X number of blocks, it drops a lesser amount of them ( I'm guessing its lesser, but by what degree I dont know) onto the oponents screen.  Those blocks stay gray and unusuable for, I dunno, 20 seconds or so which is a good amount of time for a fast paced game like this one.

When people start buying the game, my only advice is to get as much of the screen, starting at the bottom, into the air as possible and then creating rockets off of that elevated platform, or even better, launching the whole screen up and clearing it all at the same time.

This game is a ton of fun, and I for one will be picking it up on launch day.  Heck, I might even pre-order it just to make sure that I get it.
