Looks like Aquaman will win the weekend, albeit with only around $70 million.

I'm only watching the trailer once. The Get Out trailer gave out too much information. This looks the same. If I watch the trailer more than once I'll over-analyze it and know exactly the beats of the movie.

Man, I'm disappointed in how poorly Into the Spider-verse did. According to Box Office Mojo, the film didn't even make its money back domestically, and taking the marketing budget into account even the international turnout probably isn't even to get the film out of the red.

https://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=animatedspider-man.htm

And speaking of disappointing bombs, apparently the "best Transformers movie since the 1st one" was a colossal flop, too. Granted, they picked a really stupid time of year to release it.

https://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=transformers6.htm

This is why we can't have nice things.

Maybe the Sony staff will give Spider-man back with a discount then.

it's all backwards. Venom was supposed to do decent at best, and Spider-verse was to become the 2nd highest grossing animated movie of the year.

This would give us the sequels to spider-verse we want, and possibly even convince Sony to drop the Spidey-less Cinematic Universe.... which is supposed to be followed up with a Morbius movie and then who knows what's next after that.

Saw Spider-verse tonight.  It was great.  The wife fell asleep and said she'd rather have seen Aquaman.

To be fair, I think the Aquaman eyecandy is probably what put it over Spider-verse.  Hoping (for lack of a better word) to see it this next week.

Well, some good news: according to boxoficemojo, Into the Spider-verse is finally in the green with a worldwide return of $213 million on a $90 budget. It's made its money back domestically ($103 million), and the foreign box office should also pay off any marketing costs the film incurred. It's finally officially a hit.  :D

to mu understanding, that's not how BO Return works.

Calculate Domestic at about $0.50 on the $1 (theaters take the other half)
Calculate Foreign (except China) at $0.40
and then China at $0.25 on the $1 (theaters take a part, Gov takes another)

so depending on the breakdown of that $213, it might have just broke even.
which is fine, as it will make the rest on home release, then probably improve upon on the sequel.

I've been following the general rule of doubling the budget to account for marketing & return splits like that. Spider-verse did have some marketing, but likely not $90 million's worth. So given that the overall return is $213 million so far (and it'll have probably one more notable box office weekend before the results become negligible), I think we're safely past that $180 buffer amount.

Yeah, it's sad to see significantly worse animated films this year gross much higher, but hey...at least Spider-verse made back its money. That should validate that earlier sequel announcement you cited.

Just to follow-up on this, we have new totals today, as Spider-verse is now at $275,361,346 worldwide, $133,861,346 domestic.

https://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=main&id=animatedspider-man.htm

Using the splits you previously provided...

$133,861,346 domestic return x .5 = $66,930,673 estimated domestic take for the studio.

$45,634,266 Chinese return (note: the Chinese numbers are a week behind) x .25 =  $11,408,566.50 estimate Chinese take for the studio.

141,500,000 worldwide return - $45,634,266 Chinese return = $95,865,734 return for the rest of the world.

$95,865,734 x .4 = $38,346,293.60 estimated take for the studio from countries outside NA & China.

$66,930,673 + $11,408,566.60 + $38,346,293.60 = $116,685,533.20 estimated total take for Spider-verse worldwide.

$116,685,533.20 return - $90,000,000 production budget = $26,685,533.20 current estimated profit for Spider-verse (we don't know what the marketing budget was).

Incidentally, I'm not doing another breakdown for it but it looks like the foreign markets have bailed out Bumblebee, as it's now made $289,128,140 on a $135 million budget.

https://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=transformers6.htm

For reasons I can't fathom, Aquaman has almost made a billion dollars worldwide. Just...why?

No one knows. It's the most successful DCEU movie for some reason... thanks I'm guessing a large portion of the audience is made up of people who just wanted to see Jason Momoa without a shirt on for a couple hours. It's a shame that Into the Spider-Verse hasn't done that great.

Seriously, who saw this coming? Aquaman crosses $1B worldwide today.
https://twitter.com/BORReport/status/1084111969223766016

which obviously makes this the highest grossing DCEU movie so far.
it's likely to become the highest grossing DC movie once it passes THKR ($1.085B)
It is officially the #4 movie from our poll for last year.... here
and pure justification that Wan in the man and Snyder was a cancer.

Again. Saw it Yesterday those first couple of action sequences were hot. As someone who watches movies all the time. How the **** did they do that scene in the shack? You can say all you want about the undersea jizz, but that first scene was something special from a cinematography perspective. Like was it good CG, or did they use a drone as the camera? I've never seen a camera movie like that.

I bet if Marvel held off Ant-Man and the Wasp until Novemeber that Aquaman wouldn't have done nearly as well.

I hope it's a real sequel ala Extreme Ghostbusters (which is really underrated) & not another terrible reboot.
