Complete Nintendo 64 Collection
« on: May 31, 2009, 10:28:26 PM »
I realize this topic may be considered conceited, but I’ve accomplished something which I would like to share.

After twelve years, I have finally collected every Nintendo 64 game released in North America.

Over the summer of 1997 is when I got the Nintendo 64. My first game was of course Super Mario 64, and just thinking of what it was like to experience that game for the first time gives me chills. I grew up with an NES and had only played the Super NES a few times before at a friend’s house, so moving from that to fully three-dimensional worlds was quite a jump. No game has ever captured my imagination like Super Mario 64. I also got Wave Race too but I thought it was boring at the time (I appreciate it now, so don’t hate on me okay?).

You probably know the affect the rest of Nintendo’s lineup had on me, it’s almost like a cliché to gush about how awesome the games are.

In 2003 I grew bored of waiting for good games to be released on the GameCube. Knowing just how awesome my library of 30 or so Nintendo 64 games was, I couldn’t help but wonder if there were any great ones which I had missed out on. The possibility was intriguing, and there was only one way to find out what I had passed up. On April 1st 2003 (no joke), I made it my goal to collect all 296 Nintendo 64 games released in North America.

Of course, it was difficult not to get distracted by all of the other great games out there for the other systems I owned; NES, SNES, GameCube, Game Boy, and more recently Wii purchases have all gotten in the way. If I were completely focused on the N64 this would have been accomplished a lot sooner.

The last game I bought was International Superstar Soccer 2000. It is quite possibly the rarest North American release, as it was available only to rent through Blockbuster.

After all is said and done, I am left feeling a strange mixture of happiness and sadness. Happy to have accomplished my goal, but sad that there are no games left to buy for my favourite system.

Words have never been my strong suit. Here are some pictures to express the madness if anyone is interested.

My PC has a resolution of 800x600 so that is high-res! My camera isn't so great quality, but here is one that is about twice the size:

Ha ha, sure. Those systems have a lot of poor games.
I think I'll do Virtual Boy next because it has only 14 games. :D

I agree, N64 multiplayer is still a ton of fun. Congrats Mop_it_up on completing your collection. I'm rebuilding mine after foolishly trading my n64 and games a few years ago.

I said every game release.

I refuse to buy the Pikachu edition Nintendo 64 because it is hideous. There is also a Pokémon Stadium edition that has Pokémon decals on it which is pretty ugly, and a gold system which I wouldn't mind having if the price were right. That's all for North American editions.

As for controllers, there's the gold Nintendo Power 100 edition and the Donkey Kong Banana controller left.

N64 multiplayer is still a ton of fun. Congrats Mop_it_up on completing your collection.
Thanks. The multiplayer games are definitely the highlight of the Nintendo 64, no question there.
I've met quite a few collectors who have sold their N64's before later making the commitment. I guess they didn't realize the N64's greatness until it was absent from their collections.

I am envious of your accomplishment. There are a large number of good games I missed on it that I'd like to grab at some point.

It was minus one for a while... it wasn't easy to find International Superstar Soccer 2000 and even harder to find it for a decent price.

I just wanted to point out the one thing I noticed (in your impressive collection) that would make it incomplete.
& i agree, Pikachu N64 is hideous.

By all means, it is.

But it needs the SharkWire set.  How else can you get e-mail through your Nintendo 64?

Didn't someone nominate that for RetroActive? If it does become a RetroActive game I will buy it if it isn't too expensive.

That's because ISS 2000 is by far one of the best soccer games ever made.
I thought the reason is because it is a rental-only release, but I'll find out eventually if what you say is true. My next goal is to actually play the games, although that could take another twelve years...

I'm not seeing the N64 Keyboard/SharkWire combo...
I've heard of that, and have almost bought it before when I saw one on eBay. It's pretty low on my list though, especially because it isn't an official accessory. It would be useless too because the service isn't still operating.

And which one would that be?

Superman 64, duh.
Didn't someone nominate that for RetroActive?
Yeah, that would be me.  :)
Believe it or not, Superman 64 is actually one game which I think everybody should play. It is my belief that one cannot truly appreciate the good until they experience the bad, and it doesn't get much worse than Superman 64. With all of the talk of poor games on Wii, a discussion of one of the worst games in history may be eerily relevant.

Although... I don't find Superman 64 to be the worst N64 game. That honour would go to Carmageddon, a game so terrible it caused me to create the one and only review I've ever written.

The game collection is admirable, but why so many controllers? lol
To go with all of the systems of course. :) I have 8 systems so I'm actually short on controllers because I'd need to have 32 in order to have 4 per system. I was collecting every colour and I bought many of them before I bought the systems, so I ended up with duplicates of some colours because I got another one with the systems.
