I must have missed the memo because I had no idea that Commodore 64 games were coming to the VC... or is this a bit of a "surprise" announcement?

This is interesting, very interesting indeed. I wonder who they are targeting with these ancient games, especially if those who like them claim they aren't worth $5.

I'm not even entirely sure what a Commodore 64 is but that's some research I'll have to do on my own.

Why do even Australia and New Zealand get this before North America? That's not even fair!
...Not that I really care, just pointing out an injustice.
Get the **** out. You think you're entitled to electronics earlier because you're American?
Calm down dude, I was being facetious. Or at least I thought I was, as most people don't seem to appreciate my humour... :-\

It's okay, I don't really care. I need to put in more effort if I want to leave an impression on anyone.
Which I don't because I'm lazy.
And a person of few words.
And I don't have time to keep up with everything that happens here.
I have many problems you see...  :-\

LOL insulting 3DO... didn't think that was possible with how crappy the thing is. :P

why isn't there a Play it on Wii: Battalion Wars?
My guess there is that BWii is still in stores and Nintendo doesn't want to cannibalize its remaining sales potential.

I can understand your point but I'm not sure I agree with it. There are some games like Rocket: Robot On Wheels, Space Station Silicon Valley, Rayman 2, Duke Nukem Zero Hour, Doom 64, and more that are almost as -- if not as much as -- up to the quality of Nintendo-published titles. That said, there are some seriously shoddy titles on the N64, but as I explained, there are worse games on PlayStation. As a whole, I don't believe the standard of third-party games on the N64 to be any different than that of PlayStation or Saturn.

However, I'm admittedly a bit of an N64 zealot, so... I apologize if I came off as disrespectful.

I just remembered another RPG-type N64 game, Hybrid Heaven. It's kind of like a cross between a fighter and an RPG; you move around in an arena in real-time, but when you go in for attack, you select your command from a menu. You can also select defense commands when you're attacked too. You even level up each part of your character's body individually through repeated use. The story is a bit laughable, but if you haven't already tried it out it is certainly worth a go.

Podcast Discussion / Re: RFN RetroActive Game Nominations
« on: February 22, 2009, 08:10:53 PM »
Regarding Superman 64, as one of the few masochistic souls to actually see the game through to completion (yes really), I would have to say that it actually is not as bad as its reputation would have you believe. I wouldn't even consider it the worst game on the Nintendo 64 -- Carmageddon gets that honour -- and it is nowhere near the level of abysmality of Big Rigs: Over The Road Racing.

That said, it is still one of those games so cringe-worthy, it is the perfect topic of discussion for any retroactive round table. Any enjoyment you will receive from the game will come from the moments when you think it can't get any worse, and of course it does. You will laugh. If not at the game, then at yourself for your strange desire to continue and discover what is next.

If you do play it, be sure you try out the multiplayer mode with somebody. It's good for a laugh. Once. And then it becomes an insult to your intelligence.

I think Camelot wants to break out of the 'we handle farmed out IP games' mold. They want to create original games that stand out instead of taking a back seat. How would you like it if you were only known for making Mario themed sports games?
That would be perfectly fine by me, especially if said games were considered of high quality like Camelot's Mario games.

Does We Love Golf really stand out amongst golf games? To me it looks like it couldn't be more generic.

If Wii controls are a good fit for Mario Sunshine and Luigi's Mansion then I want to see sequels based on these concepts. Obviously neither game was designed with the Wii controller in mind so they wouldn't use the Wii's features to their fullest. What I imagine for Luigi's Mansion is using two Wiimates, one pointer controls the flashlight and the other would control the vacuum. With the current design of the original Luigi's Mansion that type of control style couldn't work without a major retooling of the game, and if they're going to go that far they might as well create a sequel instead. Most importantly however, is that I've already played these games more than once; no matter how well the new controls would function, they're still the same games.

I've got a bit of an interesting story involving this game. Almost the day this game was released, I purchased it for reasons I don't recall. Not once did I ever play it, and I ended up selling it last year. I had taken off the shrink wrap though, so I didn't get much for it.

This post fails because that was not really a story, nor was it interesting.
Perhaps the discussion which is taking place here will inform me of whether or not this is a game I would have enjoyed.

True, there was already a small chance of sequels, but now there's practically none.
Although, what I am hoping for (to stay positive) is that if these Wiimakes are successful and popular, perhaps that will prompt Nintendo to create sequels at some point. Unfortunately what is likely to come from these games performing well is that Nintendo will release even more Wiimakes. Mario Golf, Wave Race, Star Fox Assault, 1080 Avalanche, Luigi's Mansion... I can only hope these aren't added to the list of Wiimakes.

It seems strange that Camelot appears to have no interest in creating more Mario games. Surely a new Wii Mario Golf game would have fared better than their own generic We Love Golf game. It's a real shame, because Camelot always made the best Mario games; they were great at instilling personality in the characters.

You probably haven't heard of Superman 64's multiplayer mode because nobody (besides me) has ever turned to their friends and said "Hey let's all play Superman 64!" Much less could they say it with a straight face. If anything has ever been deserving of being labeled with "epic phail", it is Superman 64's multiplayer.

My worriment with these Wiimakes isn't that they are taking up development resources, it's that they are going to delay or replace the release of sequels.

The Wiimakes of Pikmin 1 and 2 may exist because Nintendo wanted more time with Pikmin 3.

Metroid Prime 2 will probably be the last Metroid game released on Wii.

I've never played Chibi-Robo but it does look interesting, and the Wiimake probably means we won't see a sequel anytime soon.

Camelot doesn't seem interested in making any more Mario games which is probably why we're getting a Wiilease of Mario Power Tennis (which is sadly the least changed of the bunch). I doubt we'll see a sequel now, especially if the game sells well.

I don't know how to explain Donkey Kong Jungle Beat...

Pap64's theory about how these are experiments is an interesting one, and I hope that such good does come from this. Here's hoping this isn't the last we see of these various games!

How much does this game cost? I sure hope it isn't $50... although for just an hour of playtime I suppose even $10 would be too much. Wii Play received more than an hour of playtime from me and that game is technically $10.

it was an entirely shoddy game even by n64 standards.
Far worse than the quality of Aidyn Chronicles is this phrase right here, this is one of the most terrible phrases to exist on the Internets and I am so sick of seeing it. This passive troll phrase implies that all games on the Nintendo 64 have a lower level of quality than those on other systems, even others at the time (PlayStation and Saturn). In my personal experience I have found this to be far from the case; there are some far worse games on the PlayStation, even worse than Superman 64 and Carmageddon. People are so quick to forget this of course because the popular or "cool" thing to do is bash Nintendo. Although, I suppose Nintendo kind of brought this on themselves since they claimed to go with the "quality over quantity" approach and some people expected every game to be incomprehensibly awesome.

Anyways, I agree that Quest 64 wasn't bad by any means, and I think that the cold reception it received back in the day may have been more due to people expecting it to contend with the likes of Final Fantasy VII, which was an unrealistic expectation if you ask me. It's interesting that you mention one game had what the other didn't, because I feel that if both Quest 64 and Aidyn Chronicles were combined, it'd form a quite capable RPG with an interesting battle system and compelling story.

What about Paper Mario? I'd consider that an RPG, plus it was actually good.

Mystical Ninja is pretty awesome, but I myself don't consider it anything like an RPG. It's more like a cross between a Mario platformer and a Zelda adventure, with a bit of Japanese quirkiness mixed in for good measure.

You're not missing out on anything by not owning Ogre Battle 64. I just couldn't get into that game because the battles are so incredibly boring.

Another game with "RPG elements" is Harvest Moon 64. It's a farming simulation but there's also a small town you can visit, build relations with the people there, and progress through a storyline. You also level up your tools through repeated use.

I must nominate that game for the Retro gaming feature on RFN!
Yes, Superman 64 is definitely worthy of a topic of discussion for any retroactive feature. Few seem to realize that this game's excellence has yet to be matched, much less surpassed.

It's metaphoric fog can be interpreted in many ways. It could represent Superman's isolation from society. It could mean Superman is really near-sighted. Or perhaps, it could simply be due to the burrito that Superman had eaten; this would explain why the fog is worse indoors. No ventilation.

It also contains all of the elements which make a good game:
-Blurred or non-existent textures
-NES-quality music
-Unclear level goals
-Enemies can attack you during cutscenes
-An X-Ray Vision powerup which does absolutely nothing, as X-Ray Vision would be too awesome for most people to handle.
-Tacked-on first-person shooter multiplayer mode that always ends with all players getting face-to-face and mashing the "Z" button until there's only one player left.

This game is truly epic and worthy of every accolade it receives.

Count me as part of the Wii-only crowd, as that's the only "current-gen" system that I own. Perhaps I'll start a club entitled "Wii Have Faith" for all of us who show the utmost loyalty by owning only a Wii. Wii want games to come to Wii, Wii don't want to come to the games!

How About Punch-Out W!!?

I have several games (not sealed though) that I bought solely for collecting.
I do too. I understand the whole "preserving history" deal that comes with collecting, but a part of that is also experiencing the history hands-on. As such, I do not believe a game was meant to sit in its sealed box for the entirety of its life. They are meant to be played, enjoyed, that is their purpose in their existence. They aren't something to be hoarded and stashed away, they can't fulfill their duties in a box. Preserve the boxes, stash away the manuals, but set the game free to make somebody happy, if not you then find someone else.

I have the whole MM series on NES even though I have other iterations of it.
Me too! I'd never bother with garbage like the Anniversary Collection because the originals are the most pure and unadulterated form of a game. In order to appreciate a game's legacy, you must experience it in its original form, on its original system, with its original controller.

I'm going to have to disagree with you on Aidyn Chronicles. It certainly has problems but I thought it was at least decent, with a surprisingly diverse cast of characters.

Brawl had swords and guns. Boxing is a sport. Explains the E10 vs T imo.
Lego Star Wars has swords and that's an "E10" rating.
I can't think of a game offhand which has guns and got lower than a "T" rating though, so maybe that's it. I guess I have Snake to blame for that.

A bit more on topic: More game titles should have exclamation points in them. The last one I can remember is Mario Kart Double Dash!!, which was released over four years ago. Although there isn't a game titled simply "Punch-Out!!" as the first was titled Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!/Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream and the sequel was titled Super Punch-Out!!, I still think they should add a subtitle of some kind. They can't throw the word "Wii" in there as that would lead people to believe it is part of the "Wii" series, so... I suggest "Punch-Out!! Out to Punch".

17696
I know that, but his own weapon is still his greatest weakness as that's the most effective way of taking him down. Now obviously you won't have his weapon the first time you face him, but it is still his greatest weakness.

Either that, or they could be using a smaller-size battery to make room for the added hardware.
Does the DS Lite use the same battery as the original DS? Can you use the same AC adapter to charge up either one?

I've never understood collecting sealed games. What's the point? You can't even play them, all you can do is set them up and stare at them. It doesn't really seem different than if you were to collect complete games; display the boxes and play the games!

What I am surprised about is that SSBBrawl still got a "T" rating. There's no blood, no gore, no vulgarities, no crude humour, no nudity, no drug use... why a "T" rating?
There is crude humor. His name is Wario.
Hm, yes. However, Wario is in Mario Strikers Charged with his fart attack and all that, as well as other things like Waluigi and certain sidekicks performing crotch-chops. Yet that game received the "E10" rating, so Brawl's "T" rating is still a mystery.

Fun fact: Mario Strikers Charged is the only Mario game to receive a rating other than "E".
