Dear Nintendo: Re: Wii Home Menu
« on: August 15, 2008, 07:30:40 PM »
Dear Nintendo:

While playing some Wii VC over my lunch hour, I wanted to know what time it was.  Now, I have a cell phone in my pocket, but I have to stand up to get it out, etc., etc... all wasting valuable play time.

The Wii has a clock - how about sticking the time/date in the top corner of the Wii's Home Menu?  Then, when playing, I can just quickly press the Home Button and pause the game/check the time.

Please consider adding this in the next firmware update.  Thank you.

If you play near a window, you could just look outside and determine the time by gauging the sun's position in the sky. You're probably too fucking lazy to that though! Kids nowadays, I swear!

When I was a kid, I had to walk two miles through the snow uphill to get to a window to see where the sun was!

It's not a bad idea, but my Wii's clock tends to be off a bit.  My Gamecube was the same.  They don't keep time very reliably.  Maybe Nintendo should update the firmware so that the Wii adjusts its clock every time it connects to check for messages.

I think other issues like storage space and organising VC games in a way that doesn't look like something someone who has never used a computer would come up with are higher priority.  But why not put the time up there?  I don't usually wear my watch when I'm at home playing a game so I would find it convenient.

Though wear a watch!  A friend of mine used to wear a watch in high school but now he just uses his cell phone and questions why I still wear one.  Uh, because then I don't have to pull my phone out of my pocket every time I want to know what time it is?  Using a cellphone for time is essentially living in the past and going back to pocket watches.  The whole reason wristwatches were invented was because someone figured out that glancing at your wrist is way quicker then fumbling around in your pocket.  If reaching in your pocket was the ideal way to check time then we never would have stopped doing that in the first place.

But then another friend of mine not only doesn't have a cellphone but also doesn't wear a watch even though he had both in high school (having a cellphone back in 1997 was a pretty big deal).  So he's always asking me what time it is.  TIME TO BUY A WATCH, CHEAPO!

I agree about those things needing to be a higher priority, but my idea should have a pretty simple solution...

Wii messages without sent time on them is annoying as hell.  hard to figure out when my friend that's 3 hours away sent his message for a brawl match.

I made everyone on my Friends list start using time stamps just for that reasons. At the top of every message, people are to put their time before writing anything else. Example:

I always hated the fact that when you pressed the PS button the PS3, it never displayed the time.  Now they finally put it in a recent firmware, and I'm happy.  I always loved how on 360 it showed the time.  When I'm in the middle of playing a game I love being able to hit the xbox button, take 2 seconds to check the time, and then hop back in.

C'mon Nintendo, you can do it.

The Wii's clock does suck, as did the Gamecube's. They were always a little too slow...it didn't make any sense.

Dear Nintendo,

Please include a clock to the wii home menu but even better yet, why not add shortcuts to wii channels!

I'll be sitting at playing a game and i decide "hm, maybe i should check out that new VC game i just downloaded" then i have to hit the home button, hit the wii menu button, then click on the VC game i want to play, then click start, then wait for the game to load. It takes away from the hours of play time i have..

It would be more convenient to just let me press the home menu and then click whether i want to load up a VC game or the new channel, etc etc.

Please include this in the next firmware update.

Thank you.

i came off as sarcastic but i'm actually think that would be a good idea

Uh, because then I don't have to pull my phone out of my pocket every time I want to know what time it is?  Using a cellphone for time is essentially living in the past and going back to pocket watches.

hey, Kashogistogi is bringin that back!

Never happening! The "Wii Home Menu" that comes up when you hit home is hard coded into each Wii channel and would require Nintendo to update every Wii channel released to date...

What I want is for Nintendo to allow us to use the GameCube's controller in the wii menu, and possibly to turn it on while in standby. The Wii already gives power and is able to read/see signals from the GC controller while it's on and in standby mode but does nothing with them! :@

Dear Nintendo,

See how the newest Firmware for PS3 does it and borrow generously...

That should get the time and channel complaints.

The cycle will truly be complete when we all start wearing cellphone chains because cellphone theft becomes so commonplace.

The Home screen is unique to each game; they're just button graphics in a standardized folder on the disc.  Transparency effect, resolution, and framerate are dependent on the dev.
