General Gaming / Starcraft 2 charity event
« on: November 03, 2011, 11:28:01 AM »

A Starcraft 2 Charity event!
Hey everyone!  Do you like Starcraft 2?  Do you like being entertained?  Do you like helping out sick children?  Well then, I've got exactly what you need.  Welcome to the second showing of The Rumble in the Bronze!

What the heck is the RitB?  Basically, a bunch of talented guys from the Penny Arcade forums and I decided on a whim to hold a charity event with the proceeds going to the Penny Arcade Child's Play charity.  We somehow got a professional announcer and player, Geoff "iNcontrol" Robinson, to cast the event.  The hook was that all the players in the event would be bronze league level.  For those of you who don't know, the Bronze League is the lowest level of Starcraft players.

The results were amazing!  We ended up having several thousand people watch the stream and generated over $3,000.  This year we are doing it again and got Geoff to cast once again.  People really loved watching bad players go at it with Geoff making jokes at their expense.

I'm was thinking you guys might be interested in watching the event.  The stream will be on December 10th, starting at 6pm (EST), with a pre-show at 5pm(EST).  The event is free to everyone.  If you want to donate you can, but if not, could you at least pass along the link so we can get even more people to tune it.

Here's are our trailers for the event!

Nintendo Gaming / Monster Tale DS
« on: May 25, 2011, 09:40:27 AM »
Did this game just fly right by everyone's radar?  Made by the same team that made Henry Hatsworth, another amazing game you need to own.  Picked this up on a friend's recommendation.  So good.  Here's the story:

You play as Ellie, a young girl who gets magically warped to a different world.  Upon arriving, she finds an egg which hatches into a monster, which Ellie names Chomp.

The game plays a combination of Metroid, Henry Hatsworth, and any RPG with a skill tree system.  Metroid style maps and areas that are blocked off until you have the skill to proceed.  The combat is HH style, a melee attack with a launcher, and a combo system that smashes out better rewards for a higher combo count.  Sometimes enemies drop items like cookies, barbells, scrolls, soccer balls, and so on.  Chomp can move between the two screens, the top one to fight with you and the bottom one to eat the items you've found.

Chomp can consume items on the lower screen to gain experience and stats.  After a while, he'll level-up gaining newer stats and stuff.  Eventually, you can evolve him into different forms (based on fire, water, and leafs with the expected strength->weaknesses).  You can also move Chomp between evolutions to best suit the situation.  Any abilities and skills he masters in one form can be used in other forms.

Anyways, hopefully you've read this and are willing to give the game a shot.  You'll probably be just as surprised at the quality of the game as I was.  Give it a shot.

Here's a quick gameplay video:

Nintendo Gaming / Hittin' the trail...the Oregon Trail that is!
« on: December 30, 2009, 12:41:56 PM »
I downloaded the game the other day, mainly due to my fond childhood memories.  I planned on playing it for a few minutes on the drive home from work and ended up playing for most of the night.  Nothing about the game is difficult although I am playing on normal difficulty, as hard and extreme were locked from the start.  The first stops on the trail are all training mode events anyway to show you how each mini game works.  On each loading screen, there are bits of trivia and history lessons.  Great stuff for kids and ill-informed adults such as myself.

Sadly, I lost my youngest daughter Cammy when a Bald Eagle swooped in and carried her off "Never to be seen or heard from again."  This happened real early in the game and I didn't realize I was supposed to shoot it to keep my family safe.  The bird came back later to snatch up my son Guile, but this time daddy Zangief blew it out of the sky.  Mommy Rose wasn't too happy about it, which makes no sense after losing her youngest daughter.  I guess having daughter Chun Li around was enough for her.  :D

In short, a fun and educational game which isn't for everyone.  Definitely not for the 'hardcore' gamer, but a definite fun change of pace from the normal grinding of experience and shooting of people.

Nintendo Gaming / Data East Arcade Classics
« on: December 04, 2009, 09:45:37 AM »
I didn't see this posted anywhere, but Data East is compiling 15 of their old arcade games into a collection for the Wii.  The game is set to release in the first part of next year and carries a price tag of $20.  Sounds like a steal if you ask me.

Here's the list of games:

BurgerTime, Peter Pepper's Ice Cream Factory (the rare sequel to Burger Time), Bad Dudes vs. Dragon Ninja, Burnin' Rubber, Caveman Ninja, Crude Buster, Express Raider, Heavy Barrel, Lock ‘n' Chase, Magical Drop III, Secret Agent, Side Pocket, Street Hoop, Super Real Darwin and Wizard Fire

Not trying to date myself here, but I played almost all of these gamesin the arcade growing up and have many fond memories attached to them. The big one that I want from this list is Heavy Barrel. I played that game so much that I had memorized all the gun piece locations and when to grab a piece or skip it.  One of my all-time favorite gaming moments was telling my friend that I was going to be the entire game on one quarter, only to pull it off with one man.  Epic.

The other games that leap out to me are Magical Drop III (which I never got into in the arcades), BurgerTime, Lock 'N' Chase, and of course Bad Dudes.  Heck, I wrote a comic based on Bad Dudes.   ;D

As far as extra are concerned, the game offers up some neat stuff to keep players interested.  There are 75 goals (can you say achievements?) which will unlock music soundtracks, arcade cabinet artwork, and gallery items.  You can link your high scores to your Mii, although I don't see what that does.  Save, load, and pause the game at any point for making it easier to pick up and put down.  The game supports all four control types (Wiimote only, Wiimote + Nunchuk, Classic, and Gamecube).  Seriously, if one of the control types allows me to move my HeavyBarrel guy with one stick and control his waist with the other I'll bein nerd heaven.

The only thing that looks missing is online play and an online leaderboard.  Online play really doesn't suit these types of games, so it's exclusion isn't that big of a deal.  Not having a worldwide leaderboard is a shame though.

Finally, here's the official trailer for the game:

Nintendo Gaming / Selling off some DS games
« on: September 28, 2009, 08:32:50 AM »
* Don't know if this is posted in the right place, so mods feel free to move it if needed. *

Hey guys, I'm looking to sell a few of my DS games.  The titles in question are Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and Freshly Picked: Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland.  Both games are the UK versions so they are translated into English already.  I've got a copy of Final Fantasy III (American version) w/the Brady Hint Book.  I'm looking for $15 each w/$5 to cover shipping.  If anyone wants more than one the shipping can be combined.  Finally, I have a case only for Advance Wars: Days of Ruin with all of the paperwork and instructions perfectly intact.  It would be great for someone who only has the cartridge.  Someone can have that, paying only the cost of shipping.

I do have a single Wii game to get rid of as well.  The Japanese version of Tatsunoku vs Capcom.  I only played it a few times and didn't really care for it.  With the American version coming out in the not so distant future, I get that no one will be interested, but it doesn't hurt to ask.  Looking for about $30 plus shipping.

PM me if you're interested in anything or have questions.  If I get no bites, I'll go with Ebay I guess.  Just thought I'd throw them out here since you guys would appreciate the games more and I know they'd be in a good home.

Edit: Forgot the FF3 game.
Edit 2: Forgot the Tatsunoku vs Capcom game.   :D
Edit 3: Forgot the Conduit game.  (see 3rd post) :)

Nintendo Gaming / Problems with my Wii
« on: May 12, 2009, 08:49:42 AM »
Just wondering if anyone else has had the problem I'm having now.  I picked up Klonoa a couple of weeks ago and went to play it.  Problem is that my Wii wouldn't turn on via my Wii Remote.  I thought it was a syncing issue or low batteries, but that wasn't the case.  I then tried to turn it on manually and nothing would happen.  No matter how many times I pressed or held the power button, the system didn't respond at all.

I unplugged and plugged in the power cord and got the system to power back up via the front button.  Everything was back to normal.  A few days later the problem came back.  I did some experimenting and found that I could turn the system on and off with the remote after power cycling the console.

Nothing special happened to my Wii before this occurred.  No lightning strikes, power surges, abuse, or anything.  I've had my Wii since launch and always leave it in standby (orange light) mode.  The really odd part is that even when I can't power the system on, I can still load and unload discs via the eject button.

Any thoughts or suggestions before I call Mr. Nintendo?

Nintendo Gaming / DSi musical photos?
« on: April 11, 2009, 04:34:32 PM »
I don't know if this has been found already yet, but I noticed a cute little Easter Egg in the DSi's camera function today.  Try taking a picture of anything and then open up the "edit" function.  Choose the "graffiti" option and clear the screen.  Open up the symbol types and choose the music note.  Start placing them anywhere on the screen.  Here the sound that accompanies it?  Pretty cute touch right, but did you know that it's not random?

Try this, clear the screen again.  Now place the stylus in the lower left corner of the touch screen and slowly drag it all the way to the right.  This should yield eight notes that are escalating as you move to the right.  Now place the stylus in the middle left and do the same thing.  Now it's gone up an octave.  Finally, place the stylus in the upper left and drag.  Once again, you've gone up an octave.  Cool, huh?  Clear the screen again, and place the stylus back in the lower left corner again.  Now drag up the stylus straight up.  You should get six notes.  Each pair of notes represents one level of octave.  The middle acts as the starting octave and the ones above and below it represent higher and lower octaves.

I did some experimenting and found that the notes are laid out in a certain sequence that mirrors a piano's layout.  If we assume that we have three zones of octaves with eight notes going across, that would give us twenty-four locations for notes.  Here is a visual example of what I'm talking about:

C  D  E  F  G  A  B  C
C  D  E  F  G  A  B  C
C  D  E  F  G  A  B  C

The "C" on the far right matches the "C" on the far left on the octave above it.  Try it out for yourself.  Touch the "C" location on the middle right and then touch the "C" location on the upper left.  See, same sound.  The same goes for the "C" on the lower right and the "C" in the middle left.

Now for the fun part.  Get out a piece of paper, or use something on your computer, and draw out a 3x8 grid and fill it in with the above letters.  Now take your DSi and take a picture of the grid so that it fills the touchscreen perfectly.  Once you have the picture saved, open it up and choose the graffiti option.  If you took the picture right, your screen should have twenty-four squares each with a letter in them.  Tap the stylus on the squares to listen to the proper notes.

Now, try playing this and guess what it is:

(starting on the middle octave) D-D-D, G, !D, C-B-A, !G, !D, C-B-A, !G, !D, C-B-C, A

**The "-" means play it quickly and the "!" means use the higher octave.**

Highlight for the answer: The beginning of the main theme of Star Wars

But wait, there's more!  If you hold up or down on the D-Pad while touching a note, it will apply a sharp (up on the d-pad) or a flat (down on the d-pad) to the note.  Using this new technique, try playing the following:

(starting in the middle octave) B, B, B-B-B, B-A, B-B, B-B-B, B-A, B-B, B-B-B, B-F-F, F-F-F, F-F-F, F-F

**All of the "B" and "A" notes are flats.  The "F" notes are normal.**

If your gamer sense is tingling, you should get the beat almost immediately.  If you still don't know what it is, highlight the answer here: The intro to the Legend of Zelda.

Now go out and find some sheet music and tap out some of your favorite songs!  Here are some good resources that helped me figure it all out:

The Basics of Reading Sheet Music
Sharps, Flats, and Natural Notes
The Empire Strikes Back Music Sheet
The Legend of Zelda Music Sheet (pdf)

I hope you guys find this as cool as I did.  Have fun tapping out music to your pictures...with the slightly obnoxious picture music in the background.

Nintendo Gaming / Sorry to have to do this Vega...

...but you are hence forth forbidden to trade in any games without my permission.  This is due to your recent actions in what is now known as the "FF VI debacle".  Observe: (I'm using italics for my comments and bold for points of interest)

I sold it to Gamestop yesterday. (The "it" being FF6 on the GBA)

Anyway they had a 3rd party Wireless gamecube controller for $17.99.  I got an email this weekend from gamestop for 20% off any used accessory.  So I printed out the coupon and took some stuff:

Final Fantasy IV GBA
DS Rumble Pak
Konami: collector series GBA

Got $10.75 for it all.  With the 20% off I ended up only paying $3.93 for the Wireless Cube controller which is pretty good deal to me.

I tested it out at home and it works great. The main control stick seems loose, but it doesn't effect how your character moves. I got 30 days guarantee, NO rumble, but I am very pleased. Pelician G3

Ok.  I told you about Ebay and you said you had problems with it and decided to give up on it.  Please observe the following links:

Final Fantasy 6 final bid
<a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/DS-Lite-System-Rumble-Pak-White-for-Nintendo-DSL-NEW_W0QQitemZ320304528258QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item320304528258&_trkparms=72%3A1205|39%3A1|66%3A2|65%3A12|240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14>DS Rumble Pak
<a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/Konami-Collectors-Series-Arcade-Advanced-Game-Boy_W0QQitemZ260295221462QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item260295221462&_trkparms=72%3A1205|39%3A1|66%3A2|65%3A12|240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14>Konami Collector series GBA

FF6 is going for between $15-25 dollars depending on box/instruction.  The Rumble Pak is going for around $4 and Konami Collector series around $6.  That's about $25-$35 depending on final bids.  Sell em all as a bundle and get around $30ish or so.

I know what you're saying, "Who cares?  I still got my controller which I'm ultra happy with."  Then please, please don't click on this link...it's just too painful:

Now contrary to the degrading post above, I'm a really nice guy. Therefore, I'll be your Ebay liaison in the future.  Tell me what you want to buy/sell and I'll handle the rest.  K'?

General Gaming / Quick help - complete
« on: June 25, 2008, 02:20:39 PM »
Hey guys,

As you may or may not know, some friends and I have a weekly web-comic.  The comic for next week is going to be an homage to the late, great George Carlin.  One of George's more popular acts was to entitled, "Seven words you can never say on television."  Our upcoming comic will play on that theme with a small twist.  The twist is where I need your help.

I'm looking for the "Seven words you can never say about the PS3/Xbox360/Wii"  That will end up being 7 words for each system and not 7 describing all three systems.  I've already come up with a list of words for each console and am looking for some extra input from outside sources.  If you guys want to help, just post up your words like so:

Wii - blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah
360 - blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah
PS3 - blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah

Make sure that they are single words only.  The words should also be negative in meaning.  I wouldn't use "Blu-Ray" as a PS3 word, because that is actually an advantage.  Now the word "Cost" or "Expensive" would be a good fit.  I'll be checking back on this until late Saturday.  Thanks to all who help out.

Original Thread below:

Wow, no thread on this one?!  If you didn't know, it's a strategy RPG with a slight twist.  Instead of an attack command, everyone just moves through the enemy.  If you can move 6 spaces and 5 guys are in your path, you hit all 5.  If you pass through allies, you can earn support upgrades like extra health or attack/defense bonuses.

I just picked it up tonight and started running through the tutorial.  Really different.  I'm used to AW/FE where I can wall of my weaker units, not so in this game.  I can't even beat the last tutorial and I've tried it 5 times already.  Once I figure out what I'm doing wrong, I'll update again.

Nintendo Gaming / I have a confession...
« on: March 27, 2008, 03:18:05 PM »
I play my DS sometimes when I drive.    :o

I'm a terrible person.  I know I shouldn't do it, but I have a long commute and get quite bored.  In my defense, I only play games that are turn based like Advance Wars, Phoenix Wright, Picross, and Brain Age's Sudoku.  Most of the time it's at a stop light or a long car-less straight away.  Hopefully I'm not the only person guilty of this...anyone else care to admit their gaming sins?

General Gaming / The Starcraft mega thread - Rising from the ashes.
« on: March 10, 2008, 12:08:37 PM »
I'd like to assume that everyone has played, or at least heard of, Starcraft here on the NWR forums.  With all the information about Starcraft 2 coming down the pipe, I thought it was time to drum up some interest and see if anyone out there is looking forward to playing.  I'm deeply obsessed with this game and am hoping someone here is wanting to talk about either the current game or the new one.  I still play from time to time on battle.net and will gladly schedule a game with anyone who is willing.

In case you haven't heard, the Zerg were shown last night in Korea.  Here's a few links showing of some of the new units in action:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dsuiYcOQ0c (story line teaser stuff)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdJIauWjE8s (gameplay footage)

The Zerg are back to their swarming ways it seems.  Plenty of burrowing sneakiness and infestation as well.  Being mostly a Terran player, the thought of my Barracks getting infested and turning my own buildings against me scares the hell outta me.  It's one thing when you see a large swarm coming right at you, it's a totally different thing when the buggers unburrow right in the middle of my base.  Oh well, fun times ahead!

So who is planning on attending this year?  I've gone the last three years and, having already pre-registered, I will be attending this year as well.  For more information, you can check out the official site found here.  Last year I got to meet Shyguy and I'm looking forward to meeting more forum people this year.

I'm also going to be in the Omegathon this year for my second place finish last year.  Stupid Halo 3.  *sigh*  My friends and I uploaded some video of the Omegathon rounds on our site.  If your interested, the link is in my sig.  Click the "extra" button on the front page.

This year I need an even bigger following and cheering section, anyone interested?

I decree hence forth that all DS and GBA owners must venture forth on the 3rd of October and purchase The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night for the GBA.  It will be retailing for only $19.99!  I know what your thinking, Spyro?!  Seriously, this game looks too good.  Check out this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQkzlbThnpM

If that doesn't convince you, then you are a lost cause.  Get the word out and go pre-purchase your copy today.  Make sure not to mistakenly get the crappy DS version though.

Heh, heh.  Just a quick stab at the Madden fans of the world.

But seriously though, am I wrong?  Has anyone heard just how bad the new Madden is?  It's been getting blasted a lot for being a step backwards in the series.  Most of it has to do with the new "Hit Stick 2.0".  A friend of mine played the other day and forced 4 fumbles and injured six opponent players, two of whom were out for the season.  We've decided it should be renamed the "Cripple Stick".  Thoughts?

This is the official "Hook up and get tons of garbage dropped on your head" thread.  I can make myself available Monday thru Friday evenings and all day on the weekends.  The only exception is on Wednesday nights, I'm unavailable.  I've been playing for a while, but I'm a far cry from pro level play.  I'm the type of player who can pull of 3-4 chains on average, with the occasional 7-8 chain sprinkled in.  I did land a 17 chain one time last week, but I'm thinking that was a one time fluke.

Anyways, my friend code is in my signature, bring it on!!

Nintendo Gaming / Panel de Pon for DS!!
« on: February 21, 2007, 08:46:10 AM »
IGN just reported that Nintendo of Japan just announced Panel De Pon on the 24th of April.  For those of you who didn't know, in the states this game was called Tetris Attack on the SNES, Pokemon Puzzle Challenge on the N64 and GBC, and Puzzle League on the GBA.  Sure, it's been released many times before, but now it's on the DS with WI-FI support!  It's so freakin' on.

This game is completely underrated in my opinion and I will do whatever it takes to get the word out so more people will play it.  Here is a link to some scans from famitsu:

« on: February 08, 2007, 05:24:47 AM »
Hey all,

I'm looking for some feedback on a new website some friends and I are going to be setting up this summer.  The promo site will be going up soon as a place holder, with the actual site to follow.

My question is on the front page, we will have a daily topic with replies section.  It is set up so that a news topic can be discussed by the people running the website, not unlike the way Penny Arcade does.  If we have a topic that gets two or three responces, it will start running down the main page.  So, the question is, would you rather scroll down a page to read topics or would you rather have the topic contained in it's own window with it's own scroll bar instead?

Any feedback would be greatly appretiated.

Thanks!
