NPD collects sales information for companies like Nintendo, so why change that?

Nintendo already knows how much it sold.

They know how many they shipped to GameStop. Nintendo already made their money, whether GameStop sells the copies or not.

Let's not forget that Nintendo also sold the game directly through their online store as well, so its not just the Gamestop sales we need to figure out but also whatever Nintendo sold directly, and also wasn't there some other site that was selling it as well?

With that being said, I'm sure Gamestop had the bulk of the sales. But not all of them.

Does Nintendo tell NPD how many copies of a game it sold? I mean, other than sales directly to customers I don't see why NPD would give a **** as to how many copies Nintendo sold to retailers.

NPD doesn't deal with shipped numbers, only sold numbers. I don't know if Nintendo would report how many games they sell online and at Nintendo World Store.

Yes, definitely.  The two games play entirely differently, and they have different fanbases.  For example, I love Personas 3 and 4, but I really don't like what I've played of Persona 1 (and Persona 2 didn't play much differently IIRC).

Probably not.  Persona 4 was one of the most critically acclaimed and beloved games of the last console generation.  Persona 2 is a curiosity from another era that has its fans, but nowhere near what the last two Persona games accomplished.

So would it be fair to think of P1+2 as being like CoD 1-3, and P3+4 as CoD MW-Present?

After having recently played some early PS2 FPS games (the Red Faction games), yeah I'd say that's fairly accurate.  I would, however, probably equate Personas 3 and 4 to Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops (respectively) in terms of how much more polished, streamlined, and fully-featured they are.  Sure, Personas 3 and 4 will kick your ass mercilessly when you make a mistake, but at least you'll understand why (unlike, IMO, Persona 1, which just dumps a mountain of systems on you at the outset and just expects you to figure them out).

That's right.

In America, it was at about 4.5 million sold by March (beginning or end of march? sold to retailers or consumers?): link

If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say NA sales might be slightly above 5 mil now?

It's sold somewhere over 6 million in North America.

That's the amount that was shipped. The number that is actually sold would be something less than that.

Anyway, even if it was 6 million sold that's the same as what it has sold in Japan, but remember North America has a much larger population than Japan, so for the sales to only be on par with Japan wouldn't be terribly impressive.

Nintendo last fiscal report.

Page 15

Nintendo 3DS

The Americas

Fiscal Year 2011 - 1.32 million

Fiscal Year 2012 - 4.67 million

Lifetime total - 5.99 million

The 3DS is over 6 million in North America.  Doesn't matter what some of you think but these are the official numbers from Nintendo themselves and Nintendo's own reports considers these as sales.  So unless Iwata was cooking the books for investors then the 3DS is over 6 million in North America, period.

Awesome! Thank you! So 3DS is doing pretty well right? What did DS sell around this time?

The DS is 2.19 million in America its first fiscal year.  It did 2.92 million it's second fiscal year.  So it did 5.11 million by the end of its second fiscal year.  Of course the DS was released 5 months before the end of its first fiscal year while the 3DS was released a month before the end of its first fiscal year.

So yeah, the 3DS is doing better in North America at this point in its life then the DS was.

That doesn't mean that Nintendo produce more units to sell in North America, which they likely do not.

Actually handhelds have always sold more in Japan because of the difference in culture.  Teens/adults rides trains up to 1 to 2 hours just to get to school or work and most households only have one TV set.

The last couple of months the 3ds has been selling roughly the same, around 200k per month in the US.  Not much but considering the time of the year is about normal.  Kingdom Hearts is the next big release so we might get a slight bump in sales but don't expect larger number until the holiday shopping season again.
