Nintendo Gaming / UK VC games on Australian Wii's
« on: December 12, 2006, 09:51:30 PM »
Looks like Australian gamers are able to download Turbo games even though the Turbo was never released in Australia.

For those Australian's interested all they need to do is change the country location on their Wii's to United Kingdom and they will be able to access and download VC games from the UK servers.  I wonder how long it will be before Nintendo Australia addresses this issue.  Im sure the OFLC will have something to say about this.

TalkBack / RE: PAL Virtual Console Games Available
« on: December 02, 2006, 08:10:28 PM »
The PAL territories are slightly different to the NTSC regions.  For one all PAL released games will work on any PAL system.  I have imported hard to find games in Australia from the UK without any hassles.  All PAL games are in English (with the usual options of German, Spanish, French etc).  Why Nintendo Australia and Nintendo Europe are not partnering in regards to the VC is beyond me.  They are missing a good opportunity.  Unlike America and Japan who have the obvious language barrier and are culturally very different.

Oh well lets see if Nintendo Australia will bring the TurboGrafx in the future once all the launch bugs are ironed out.

I do not understand why anyone would pay the RRP for the PS3 let alone $10000.  The PS3 has one of the worst launch line ups ever.  I definitely wont be buying a PS3 until there is a severe price drop and there is a few decent games (ie FFXIII).  Not to mention it wont be launching in Aus until March.

General Gaming / RE: Did Sony lie about PS3 availability at US retailers?
« on: November 19, 2006, 12:09:12 AM »
I think Sony should have delayed the launch. They have already pushed the PAL territories back to March.  They clearly were not ready with the shortage of diodes and all those other excuses they came up with.

I suppose they were rushing to get it out before Thanks Giving but if the PS3 is sold out for the next month they wont be making money (or loss) on their hardware sales.

Its kind of like deja vu, I remember the exact same thing happening with Microsoft last year.  Rush to get the console out, its sold out everywhere delay launching in PAL territories until March.  You would think that Sony would learn from Microsoft's mistakes and try to capitalise on it.  Microsoft have now had the 360 out for a year and have ironed out all their supply issues and are starting to steam roll.  Sony really cant afford to make mistakes like this.

Lets hope Nintendo dont follow suit.

What is interesting is how the vitrual console controller seems to have taken a step back from Nintendo's Gamecube controller mantra.  If I remember correctly the reasons behind the Gamecube controller design was because they wanted to simplify the controller to a point where every button feels unique so people could intuitavely find them without looking at the controller.  I believe they acheived that relatively well, im still forever looking down at my ps2 pad.

I believe they did not go with an N64 controller setup because of the steep learning curve non-gamers would face trying to use it.  Think about the first time you ever saw or picked up an N64 controller.  Hence the reason for the current design.  It is by far the industry standard and will be the most flexible to use for cross-platform support (if indeed developers wanted to put dual shock games on the Wii).

Besides the majority of people who want to play gamecube games on their Wii's will already have a gamecube.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Amazing Wii Deals!
« on: October 30, 2006, 09:19:32 PM »
Looks like Australian retailers are finally releasing their pricing structure for Wii games and accesories.  Looks to be good news dvd crave is selling Wii games for no more than AU$88.75 (Monkey Ball).   Games warehouse is a little more expensive with Zelda set at AU$99.95.  I have yet to see a Nintendo game (1st or 3rd party) that you cant get for less than AU$100.  Just need to shop around.

So it looks as if Nintendo arent going to price themselves out of the Australian market for the up an comming generation. =)

Bah... MAC filtering is good...

I thought of piggy backing the DS through the Wii but it still leaves a hole open in your wireless network.  If the DS can connect to your network through the Wii via WEP whats to stop other devices?  Yeah MAC filtering is good but not perfect MAC addresses can be spoofed.

I think the most you can do is to use an open system with a 128 bit WEP key, only allow registered MAC addresses a connection and dont broadcast your SSID.  Still a little future proofing would be nice via a firmware upgrade.

Nintendo should have taken advantage of this when they release the DS Lite.

Nintendo Gaming / DS Wireless Security
« on: October 28, 2006, 12:29:42 AM »
Just watched Matt over at IGN demonstrate the Wii user interface.  I noticed that the Wii can connect to wireless network with WPA-PSK security.  Im just wondering when Nintendo are going to offer firmware updates for Nintendo DS to support this type of security.  It seems pretty useless to allow the Wii to connect to wireless networks with WPA-PSK security and your DS is still using WEP.

Come on Ninty get a move on and let us d.l some firmware upgrades.  Id like a secure wireless network not a flawed open wireless network with crappy WEP.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Wow, you Australians pay through the nose for games.
« on: October 20, 2006, 07:45:20 PM »
Some Australian online retailers are suggesting a $110 price point.  However because there has been no official pricing from Nintendo Australia released I think its just to cover there arses.  Microsoft was soon to drop the price of X360 games at the $110 price point in Australia.  Nintendo has not traditionally done very well in Australia and to release games at that price point will continue that trend if not make it worse.  If Nintendo really want to make ground in this territory I believe the gamecube pricing struture is the way to go (ie $89.99RRP).  Although in the past there have been 3rd party titles on Nintendo systems that entered the market at the $110 price point.

I suppose we shall just have to wait and see when stores get more pricing information.

Although I believe $100 for a wii-mote and nunchuk unit is a little excessive

Its difficult to program for because its an entirely new concept and way of interacting with games.  Im sure alot of these developers havent had much time to fully understand how the controller works or even use the controller.  Its one thing for a Nintendo rep to walk into a company and say we have got this awesome new controller capable of doing x,y and z and then for a developer to visualise the concept and turn it into a workable product without any prior experience.  I think that even for gamers its going to be quite a transition and will take some time to get used to.  I just hope developers dont rush to get games out for the sake of having a game on Wii.

Its going to be interesting to see what the 2nd and 3rd generation Wii games are going to be like once developers begin to fully utilize and understand the controller.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: So are games region free or what?
« on: September 17, 2006, 05:14:16 AM »
Wii games maybe reigon free, but virtual console games most likely wont.  It will be interesting to see if they do offer NTSC counterparts in the PAL territories.  Most of the TVs nowdays support both NTSC and PAL in the PAL territories.

To be honest it would cost Nintendo very little to host there entire library on the Virtual Console in all formats that is accessible to everyone.  Whether or not they decide to do it is another question.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Aussie Wii Release Details (UPDATED)
« on: September 16, 2006, 04:57:29 PM »
$400 for a Wii in Aus is not really that bad.  Its what I was expecting, we get taxed higher than in other territories plus the cost of shipping the Wii's to Aus is going to push the price up.  If memory serves me correctly the Gamecube debuted here for about $400 without a packin game.  So its not too bad for launch and im sure it wont take too long to drop in price (if your patient enough to wait).  Oh and if you jump in quick you can get a free game when you pre-order your Wii at Toys R Us .  Which is a pretty sweet deal for $400. (It would be interesting to know if you get to pick your game from all titles at launch or whether or not it is refering to a selected few titles or even if its refering to Wii Sports)

Also I dont believe they have released pricing on VC games, remote, remote attachments and classic controller in Australia yet.  This could be where it hurts Nintendo a little bit, having so many controllers, attachments to controllers etc.  If you can use your gamecube controllers for NES, SNES, Gamecube (possibly N64) VC games then it wont be so bad.  Too many accessories will really push the price of the Wii up.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Caricature-making software on the Wii?
« on: June 02, 2006, 06:38:42 PM »
This pretty much confirms at the least a camera for the wii possibly even a web cam.  Now it will be interesting to see if its packaged with the wii or is sold seperately.  If i had to make an educated guess the camera will be sold seperately and as a pack in with wii sports much like mario party's microphone.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Wii: The cheapest expensive console
« on: May 12, 2006, 05:57:13 PM »
Im glad the Wii is not too expensive.  I believe the best way to play Wii multiplayer games would be to have two consoles and hopefully they can be lanned together.  Maybe one of the reason's Nintendo didnt go down the HD route was that atm its still too expensive for the masses.

Even though I can see all the benefits of the Wii being connected 24-7.  I still hope you can turn the feature off.  I don't want my Wii leaching my bandwidth all the time.  It could push my download limits over!!

TalkBack / RE:EDITORIALS: Wii Will Get Over It, Won’t Wii?
« on: May 04, 2006, 03:02:33 AM »
Nintendo's marketing stratedgy is market disruption.  By having such a controversial name as WII it gets people talking about it.  I personally dont like it (i was more for the SUPER DUPER MIGHTY MORPHING EXTREME DELUXE PANTY DROPPER SPECIAL CHAMPIONSHIP EDITION NINTENDO ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM THE FIFTH ) as do many other people but ever since they announced the name I havent really paid much attention to the SONY and MICROSOFT camps.  Its quite ingenious really irrespective of whether people are intending to buy the product or not everyone is talking about the WII.  The more people talk about it, the more they are likely to buy it or even encourage others to buy it.

The day after Nintendo released the official name of the Revolution there was an article in the Herald Sun (National Australian News Paper) about it, which is a really big thing here considering it wasnt in the technology lift-out they have on wednesdays.

Nintendo is going into E3 at full speed and is going to piss all over SONY and MICROSOFT.  Besides FFXII there is no other game on any Sony or Microsoft platform im actually looking forward to.  Dare I say it but the WII is starting to overshadow Zelda.

I doubt it very much NiGHTS out of dream will be on the virtual console conisdering it was a Saturn game.  SEGA as yet have not announced a Saturn emulator for the virtual console and have only said that you will be able to play Genisis (MegaDrive) games.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:"Flight Game" by Hudson
« on: April 19, 2006, 12:53:37 AM »
IGN has neither confirmed or denied that the flight game Hudson is working on is Pilotwings.  Matt is leaning towards that it isnt Pilotwings but he is only guessing.

Either way it goes, whether its Pilotwings or not it will be interesting to see how Hudson implements this game with their so called "gesture" movements.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:IGN Leaks Some Rev Specs Again! 3/29/06
« on: March 31, 2006, 06:42:16 PM »
This is why Nintendo are reluctant to release the specs of the Rev because on paper they seem vastly inferior to that of the X360 and PS3.  But in reality specs only paint part of the picture and hopefully the full picture will be unveiled at E3 so we can go "oooooh, aaaaah".

Nintendo Gaming / RE:IGN Promises Rev Specs: Evening 3/29/06
« on: March 29, 2006, 02:08:55 PM »
Personally I couldnt give a damn what the specs are.  As long as the hardware is efficient and has no bottlenecks the Rev should be fine.  Although a bit extra RAM wouldn't hurt

The only people who truely care about the specs of the Revolution is the developers (and fanboys comparing cock sizes).

Nintendo Gaming / RE:No Simultaneous Worldwide Launch
« on: March 29, 2006, 02:18:40 AM »
Whilst im not holding my breathe for an Australian release of the revolution until march of next year.  If Nintendo allows a 14 week window for Revolution's launch and get it out in japan early enough it is still possible for Nintendo to release the Revolution in all territories by the end of the year.

However I would like to see Nintendo to step their game up in Australia otherwise they may as well not launch the Revolution here at all.  Im pretty sure the majority of Australian's will either buy a PS3 or X360 unless Nintendo can market the Revolution here more aggressively.  Suprisingly im noticing that even the DS is getting shunned on retail store shelves with the games being moved to the back of stores and/or behind poles whilst the PSP's movies are at the front of the store.

Australia needs more love from Nintendo not neglect!

General Gaming / RE: PS3 getting live-like online service
« on: March 28, 2006, 02:33:06 AM »
Everything Sony promises sounds impressive, but to date, I don't think they've ever once delivered anything as impressive as they've promised.

Yet people still buy SONY products.  SONY as a brand is extremely powerful and well known worldwide so they could potentially deliever the biggest lemon ever and im sure it would rack up alot of sales.

Video chat is a horrible waste of bandwidth. What can you glean from someone's face that you can't do from their voice mid-game?

Video chat maybe a horrible waste of bandwidth but if it doesnt lag its a pretty impressive feature to have. Im sure you will also have the ability to turn it on or off.

Also I would like to go on the record that in-game video chat is the most retarded idea since.... Damn I can't think of anything more retarded.

It is no more retarded than in-game voice chat.  That can be just as distracting if people are screaming in your ears.  Besides one positive thing video chat will enable is that you will be able to moon your competitors after wiping the floor with their arses.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: No original Rare games on the Virtual Console?
« on: March 28, 2006, 02:23:16 AM »
Nintendo may have the rights to publish the game on the N64 but the virtual console is another story.

I dont know exactly how the videogame industry works but if its anything like the movie industry then a distributor (publisher) may have a license to distribute a movie on vhs for predetermined amount of time then say years go by and the license of that movie changes hands through buyouts and takeovers and then the distributor wants to distribute that movie again but this time on dvd they have to acquire a new license for the movie even if it is from the original company.

I think out of goldeneye, perfect dark, jet force gemini, blast corps and banjo kazooie Nintendo has the best chance at getting goldeneye onto their virtual console because I do believe EA holds the bond license.  However I do not know how much of goldeneye RARE may still own, it is possible that when the bond license was taken over by EA, RARE may still own certain parts of goldeneye.

This is going to be a stumbling block for any non-nintendo made game, especially if the company who made the game does not exist anymore.  Tracking down the licenses can be a real nightmare.

On the other hand games like perfect dark, jet force gemini, blast corps and banjo kazooie may never see the light of day again depending on Nintendo's publishing agreements.  Even though RARE may own the IP's we dont know what sort of agreement RARE made with Nintendo when these games were published on the N64 and we dont know what agreements still exist when Nintendo signed RARE over to Microsoft.  Also it maybe illegal (definately unethical) for Microsoft to make a N64 emulator to play these games so the only way they could appear on Microsoft's Virtual Arcade is if they were built from the ground up (now is that worth RARE's time?).

For now lets just appreciate all the games that we know we will get to play again and lets leave the legalities for Nintendo to battle it out.
