This is a legite concern I've thought about before.  If any games have you  realisticly mimicking motions such as throwing a ball, grenade, etc. chances are one time or another you will naturally let go.  I like your idea of a wrist strap and I bet at the very least a third party will sell one eventually.

Nintendo Gaming / Mario Revolution
« on: March 09, 2006, 09:43:14 AM »
I've seen quite a bit of talk about the next Mario game on Revolution in another thread and I think its about time that it gets it's own (pardon me if there is a thread somewhere from way back when).  I'm just goint to describe some ideas I have with the hopes I will get some good ideas from the rest of you.

With a lot of people's inerest in retro games and Nintendo's new virtual console concept, along with what people's opinion about Mario 64/SMS not feeling like the calssic mushroom kingdom I thought up two options to bring this back:

One option is a more obvious one:  truely return to Marios' roots with a 2D mario game using 3D visuals, much like they are doing now with the new DS game.  There is no possible way to truely mimick the old-school 2D Mario gameplay in 3D and a retro inspired 2D game for rev (if done correctly) could really draw in a lot of people, especially from nastalgia.  The controller could make for some intense and fresh gameplay.  Just imagine sitting back with your revmote and with the flick of your wrist controlling Mario's every move.  You may not even need to use any buttons for jumping, just flip the controller up like in the promo video and maybe just use the "A" button for fireballs and such.

The other option is to make a Mario game that is more in tune with the side scrolling gameplay but in 3D.  The best example is those sub-missions in SMS where you had no waterpack.  These were by far my favorite parts of the game.  By making levels more confined/linear, throwing in some challenging obstacles and puzzles, and getting away from the star/shine system it would play a whole lot more like the games of old.  To give it even more of the retro feel the graphics could be made to look exactly like the art style of the 2D games but in 3D.  They could use 2D looking backgrounds with sprites walking around them and even puprosely put in pixelated looking 8 or 16 bit textures.  At the end of each level you could find toad.  They could also use the music and sound fx directly from the original games to top it all off.

Either way they did it I think that both games could be emmensly fun.  By making the levels more linear and confined they could cram a lot of them in the game.  They would also be supporting their stance that gameplay and innovation are key by purposely making the games look more retro and stylized and proving that the gameplay is what counts.  My worste fear is a game much like SMS but just with added rev controls.  I'm sure the game could be fun but there is so much more they could do and different ways they could approach the game.

lol I thin this is very true.  I think that they are getting as tired of the same old as we are.  If it ain't broke don't fix it can only last for so long before an overhaul has to happen and I'm glad they realised this.  Will be funny when the other companies follow suite and then later everyone forgets who started this "revolution" in the first place and Nintendo is more then likely back to being the underdog again.  Oh well I will still be there awaiting their next move

That sucks Rat...I hope this doesn't affect your ability to play with the new Revmote.  How are traditional controllers on your fingers?  Is this part of why you have problems :?

I read all 4 pages of this thread and saw a lot of great points.  I agree that Nintendo might be shooting themselves in the foot by releasing sequals like SSB, Mario, Zelda, etc. at launch due to their unfortunate bad image at the moment...but then again if they are excellent games I doubt this will matter as much as one might think.  In my eyes SSB and Zelda series are still VERY fresh because each new game is made in a new way with enough improvement to justify them.  Mario on the other hand, I think that up until Mario Sunshine it had stayed pretty fresh and new but Sunshine wasn't enough for me to think of it as the next "leap".  I really enjoyed the game but it was no better then Mario 64.  Plus...all of the Mario games (party 1-who knows, tennis, soccer, golf) on both their consoles and handhelds have sort of made it hard for them to maintane the hype of the next "mario" game.  I don't care that mario is featured in all those games because for the most part they are of good quality, but the general consumer is seeing this and probably starting to think that's all Nintendo is, tired mario "rehashes".

Hard core gamers, apart from pre-existing Nintendo fans, will need something more to convince them.  Offering sequals to their old IPs could work if they turn out to just be phenominal but the name branding alone will most likely turn off more than a few of these gamers.  I'm hoping that games like Ubisoft's FPS will strike interest in these more hard core gamersand convince them that there is something to be missed if they don't get a Rev.

Also, as already stated by a few, it is extremely important for Nintendo to make a strong stand this year.  They can't afford anything less then a GOOD launch because of all the Devs playing the wait-and-see game.  If these devs don't see a strong enough reason to support the Rev then it is destined for a lackluster amount of games.  I think the key is one or two must have blockbusters at/around launch that offer experiences not found ANYWHERE else, along with a very reasonable price point to get this thing kicked off.  Seeing as to how the DS is doing in Japan I can already say that I am 100% positive that the Rev will sell pretty good in Japan...it's America and Europe where they will have problems.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:New Gameboy
« on: March 01, 2006, 08:47:13 PM »
I find this to be an interesting topic so I've decided to chime in:

Pro Gamecube Portable:

-devs are already in possesion of the development kits and know how to make games for the system
-GCN games are already small and therefore rather portable
-There is a large library of already available games
-the rev can act as a gameboy player right off the bat and will draw further interest to the new PGC
-any new games can be bought even by those who don't own a PGC
-hardware cost could be low, considering the Cube is already cheap and the components can be supstantially shrunk
-size of disks will be a big step up from past cartarige tech

Con Gamecube Portable:

-the GCN wasn't the biggest of successes and no longer truley fits into Nintendo's new stratagy
-the DS is doing fantastic...
-the GCN disks will require power consumption similar or more so then that of UMD's
-with both old Cubes and new Revs being able to play these games right off the bat many simply won't see a reason to by the device
-the PGC will not offer anything new or different from a GCN
-requires a completey functional Cube-esque controller with all the buttons/sticks...
-disks aren't nearly as durible as carts

I do like the idea of the 3d screen technology mentioned.  Sharps tech allows a crips 3d depth to be added to a lcd screen as long as you are somewhere near the center of the screen (not viewing from side).  This sounds like an innovative idea that I think should be used later on when the prices go down (I think Ian's right and it would really drive up the price).  This would definately fit into the next DS as one of the cool new features to add to the experience.

As far as Nintendo's new direction into innovation and somehow retro gaming at the same time I'm pretty confused what direction they are going to be taking their next portable.  They could simply make a next cart playing gameboy that plays all old gameboy games again with improved graphics...but this would be similar to the PSP yet probably not play media which could put them in a not-so-good situation.  I think with the new popularity of the DS...and the new competition of the PSP they are really doing some hard thinking now as to what the logical next step is.  My guess?  An evolution of the DS with even more new emmersive features.

Let him sell his Cube...then laugh at him when Zelda comes out and is a steller game and has a lot of hype.  Look at OoT.  It was on a 256 Megabit cart I believe which is the equivilant of  32 Megabytes.  A Cube disk can hold up to 1,500 Megabytes.  1,500 MB = about 46 x 32MB (I know that the Gamecube has higher res textures and more detailed models but still this is a lot of space)  Also, Zeldas are known for their good realtime movies as opposed to space-eating FMV.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Nintendo France confirms Rev controls for Zelda
« on: February 28, 2006, 01:16:57 PM »
Hmm lets see...the Rev comes with 512 MB of built in Flash Memory.  How much memory would it actually take to add Rev functionality to TP (or any other game they might want to for that matter).  I'm not saying they should make a habbit of this but they could first release it on cube and then announce that the rev will be able to download a small free patch to make it then work with the revmote.  They could also release it with two versions as long as they made a patch for those who already bought it on Cube and now own a Rev.

There has been the potential to make games using touch technology and with powerful portable power (like newer PDAs and Tablet PCs) for a long while now but it wasn't until the DS where the touch technology was truly utilized for games and caught on.  I think that this is definately fitting into the confusing realm of a "jack of all traits" type device which can supposedly do anything.  It might be powerful and have touch technology but will it be as powerful as a tablet PC and will people mind the smaller screen?  It might have PDA software but will people want to carry this thing around?  It might be able to play PC games but will people want to buy something that they can probably get cheaper for the PC AND be able to upgrade it according to new technology?

For me with all the technology and all the bleeding of technical features from one peice of equipment to the next it is hard to know wtf is going on anymore.  Should I worry about a cell phone with a 2 MP camera when I could save up for an actual worth-while digital camera?  Should I spend 250 on a PSP "gaming" device because it can play movies and music whereas the DS has the better GAMES.  Its coming to a point where everything can do everything but only a few things do it the best so you may end up with devices that can overlap functions rather then specializing in one or two.

At least a few companies (like Nintendo) are pretty much sticking to specializing in what they do best without compromising their products.  On the other hand I can see why one wouldn't want to cary around a thousand gadgets.  My conclusion?  I'm conused as hell and there is too many electronic gadgets on the market...

Not only is the brightness and color better...but look at the viewing angle here!  The viewing angle was one thing that bugs me about the original DS and it appears to be fixed.  If you look at some of the pictures you can also see the buttons have a little more depth to them which I'm betting will feel better when playing games.  I've heard the Dpad is still a little "clicky" though so I may still be suffering some extreme cramping while playing Mario Kart

Actually you have a pretty good point here.  Back in 2001 the only graphics they showed were some demonstations at the Space World that came before it.  This time around they have basically showed nothing...  Either they are trying to prove their point about how tech specs aren't there primary concern (while also possibly surprising us in the end with the graphical capabilities of the Rev) or they are hiding something about, like Nemo said, how the games are displayed.  Or...they are just being Nintendo and preparing us for the best E3 ever and that's as far as we should look into it.

Just thought this might tie in to this thread rather nicely: Link

Jonathan Metts wrote a nice opener to get us all excited and prepared for E3.

Oh, and I might have missed something, but has TP been confirmed to be forward compatible with Rev. by Nintendo?

42
I might be wrong but those look like blueprints to how they did the ending in Mario Kart DS.  I believe the views match up.  Nemo I don't think that they're not going to even up their graphics on SD.  I firmly believe that the graphics will look great, even if they don't look as good as the competition.  Take a PC video card that is more mainstreem price (but still very powerful) and match it up with an upper midrange CPU (still very cost effective).  Take into account both are custom made just for gaming.  Now utilize these to display on a SD TV and see how much you can push...  The potential is there to push some very pretty games.  With the other consoles part of their increased power will be going simply to displaying them at higher resolutions, while with the Rev. they will be using 100% of the added power for new fx, more polys, and the like.

Man...some of you guys are lucky bastards lol  You've got me feeling both sentimental about the past and how wonderful E3 2001 was and also extremely excited about this years E3.  If any E3 will top 2001 it WILL be this year's.  To think Nintendo is holding back just as much (if not more) then they did before the 2001 E3...you just know that they are going to hit us with something BIG.  All this talk about all the new tech and how the other consoles will dominate Nintendo...it will feel great once all the people show up to E3 and are blindsided by Nintendo's offering and the underdog steals the show.

Good find BlackNMild2k1.  There seems to be a fairly steady stream of news about devs working on or wanting to work on the Rev.  I hope this keeps up.  If there are a fair amount of 3rd party support, including some big name devs, and the Rev has a decent launch then there will more then likely be more jump on board.  Especially if the Rev proves to both excell in ports AND in unique games.  So far so good.

I don't think it can be argued that the technical prowess of a console can't help it graphically.  But the point that iMoron made here is the part that people often times forget, graphics are more the artists ability to create the worlds and how they put them together then the technical specs of a console.  The fact of the matter is that once all of the consoles are released and the buzz about the visuals grows stale once more all we will be left with is what the artists and designers can do to mold the power to their own style.  I think a fine example of games which excell with graphics are both RE4 and LoZ:WW.  In my opinion both had fantastic graphics and the great difference in their actual appearance goes to prove the point of how important artistic direction is in a game.  I guess there are two sides that people seem to rest upon, either they see technical progression as benifiting graphics primarily as a quest for the most realistic visuals attainable or they see it as a quest for opening up the doors for new possiblilities for artistic expression through more unique and creative visuals.  From my experience more Nintendo fans seem to fit in the latter.

Refering back to RE4 and WW though, you can see how much tech specs don't matter as much as a lot of people make them out to.  You see, with RE4 the fact is that the primary reason it looked so spectacular was the artists behind the work.  Now, with the next generation of consoles will the visuals be better?  Again, it is really up to the artists and designers but yes I do think they generally will be.  What gets me most excited is the possiblilities that open up for all sorts of crazy presentational approaches and realtime filters.  I may be wrong, but looking at all past generations in consoles the gap between the Rev and the PS3 as far as what can be achieved will probably be close enough for a game made for the PS3 to be ported to the Rev and still be entirely respectable visually.  Even if it isn't though, as I've said before, the "wow" over the graphics will probably die down as time goes on and PCs overcome consoles once more.  Who knows, maybe if the Rev is significantly weaker tech spech wise devs will look to create more stylized games with creative visual effects to compinsate.  This could make sense, because I presume a lot of the games will be very unique in other ways simply do to the controller.

Hey, just a quick question that I'm hoping someone can clear up.  I was asked to redo one of the animals "phrases" they say all the time and after I did she said that she would say it next time but it never happened and she always says the same old thing.  So now she's stuck saying the same thing because of this lousy glitch.  I was wondering if there is any way to change a catch phrase whenever you wanted or if it randomly lets you change their phrases when you speak to them at a later time?
