Gotcha. I assume it's probably going to remain hodgepodge going forward then?

Other than stuff like PlayStation Minis, and PSone games sometime soon, I don't think there are any games that you can buy once and play on both PS3 and Vita right now. There's stuff that's cross-compatible, like MLB The Show and I think Wipeout and Super Stardust, but they all require you to buy separate versions for each system.

I know of at least 1: MotorStorm: RC. You buy that once and you get both the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita versions (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/11/22/introducing-motorstorm-rc-for-psn-and-ps-vita/): "It’s the same experience on both PS3 and PS Vita, and picking up the game on PS3 will give you full access to the game on PS Vita (and vice versa)".

It should be noted, though, that that's only for the paid version.  There's a free Scion-sponsored version for Vita that you only get the Vita version for.

There are a few other games that you buy once and get both versions: The Pinball Arcade & its DLC, the Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 DLC, and Zen Pinball 2 (where you get for free all the tables you already purchased for Marvel Pinball and presumably Zen Pinball 2 as well).  I believe the upcoming Sound Shapes is going to be a "buy one, get both" deal, too.

I'm not suggesting something where some games allow it and some games don't.  Back when walkmans and discmans were popular it wasn't like you bought special albums for on the go.  Nope, you just bought ANY cassette or CD album and played it.  Part of the appeal was that your normal music collection worked on your portable music player.  I think what people really want out of something like the PS Vita is to buy PS3 games and be able to play them on the go.  Not like titles that support it but EVERY title, like the Sega Nomad and Turbo Express.

Of course the handhelds that did offer that were not very successful but I think that's largely because of the technology at the time.  The concept isn't really feasible unless consoles standardize for a long period of time to allow the current tech to be affordable in a handheld form with good battery life.  The old console method of updating every five years doesn't allow this to work because the tech doesn't become handheld feasible until the system is already obsolete.  But if the PS3 stuck around for another ten years there would be no reason not to make a handheld version of it.

Nintendo realizes that no one just wants to play a shittier version of their console.  For the N64/Cube years the 2D/3D seperation let their handhelds offer a unique experience and then when their handheld could do 3D games that made a real effort to differentiate the two models - the DS with it's touchscreen and the Wii with it's motion control.  The only time the Game Boy was really just kind of an inferior handheld version of a console was during the SNES days.

The only time the Game Boy was really just kind of an inferior handheld version of a console was during the SNES days.

Also sorta true in the NES days as well, because even though this might be subjective I think most people would agree the Mario Land games didn't match up to the Super Mario Bros. games. Don't get me wrong they were still great games in their own right, just maybe not as good... but again that's subjective.

If you think about it the Gameboy was basically an inferior version of the NES. While the controls were identical and both were 8-bit machines, the NES was in color and had better sound and I think capable of handling more sprites and stuff like that. The Gameboy Color not only brought color to the system but also beefed up the specs a bit by quadrupling the RAM and stuff so I think the Gameboy Color was about on par with the NES, and maybe even more powerful. I think for all intents and purposes the GBC could offer the same gaming experience as the NES.

But the SNES was still ahead until the GBA came out. The GBA is basically a handheld SNES, and the DS could probably be thought of as a portable N64, and then the 3DS is maybe a portable Gamecube. I don't know if Nintendo's next portable is going to be like a portable Wii because of the Wii being so similar in specs as the Gamecube, but for the most part it seems like each handheld corresponds roughly to the last gen console in power. The consoles pioneer the specs and are the most bleeding edge you can get, whereas the handhelds are more refined and established technology that's now in a portable form.
is your sanity...

Looks like 3DS has finally surpassed 5 million sales in the US.

Quote
The 3DS has surpassed five million units sold in the United States, Nintendo announced today. Contributing to that new milestone: over 155,000 3DS systems were sold in the US in the month of June, according to NPD data cited by Nintendo.

In addition, Nintendo moved "more than 150,000 units of the Nintendo DS family and nearly 95,000 Wii consoles." In terms of 3DS software, Nintendo revealed new life-to-date totals for three million-sellers: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (over 1 million), Super Mario 3D Land (2.1 million), and Mario Kart 7 (1.75 million). If there's a conclusion that can be drawn from this, it's that not enough people bought Kid Icarus Uprising.
Unfortunately, the Wii is falling farther and farther from grace.

Ah! Beaten to the punch. Well, have some (year-to-year?) percentages!

http://www.gamespot.com/news/lego-batman-2-tops-dismal-june-sales-6386826

JUNE 2012 US GAME SALES
OVERALL DOLLAR SALES
Total consumer spend (rentals, used sales, digital estimates included): $1.36 billion
Total retail sales: $699.8 million (-29%)
Non-PC hardware: $201.3 million (-45%)
Non-PC software: $328.7 million (-29%)
Total software: $362.8 million (-27%)

Nice to see Pokemon still be able to put a spin off in the top ten. Doesn't hurt that the game is great, or so I hear.

Wow, I mean, I know there must be some huge dropoff between #1's 450k units and Pokemon Conquest at #7, but still, that's sort of an impressive showing for a handheld title.

I have to raise an eyebrow to Amazing Spider-Man only being at #10, despite being a pretty decent game based on an extremely popular license.  I can't believe Battlefield 3's Premium...thing managed to help it out-sell Spider-Man.  I'm surprised Modern Warfare 3 is still that high as well.

Battlefield 3 was 8th in the last NPD, it is a slow retail summer, and I guess there wasn't much buzz for The Amazing Spider Man (either movie or game) as one would hope. Also, people seem to like their games with guns. As for Battlefield 3 Premium, it's not too awful as the $50 gives you more multiplayer maps than what came with the base game. From what little research I've done, Premium compares similarly with previous expansions and booster packs for previous Battlefield games. This may be myself being an apologist as I have bought Premium. The kicker being that I paid more for Premium than my pre-order of Battlefield 3.

Pokemon and Dragon Quest Monsters still up there at the top.The Calciobit soccer game that has been featured in many Nintendo Directs is now out. Etrian Odyssey sees an 85% drop. The Playstation Vita version of Level 5's Time Travelers sells more than the 3DS version.

Also, it seems the 3DS 2011 Winter Holiday Trinity has completely dropped out of the top 20. Super Mario 3D Land was the last to hang in there last week.

Hold on a moment. Was Time Travellers already released for 3DS? That's a pretty soft opening for what seemed like a potentially cool Level-5 RPG.

They got released simultaneously.  So it looks like the 3DS has now failed.

That is pretty impressive for the Vita version, given that the 3DS has close to eight times as many units sold.

I would guess the reason the Vita version sold better than the 3DS version is because Vita users are so starved for new games that any tiny morsel they get they are going to tear apart like a bunch of lions against a lone unarmed gladiator.

I would guess the reason the Vita reason sold better than the 3DS version is because Vita users are so starved for new games that any tiny morsel they get they are going to tear apart like a bunch of lions against a lone unarmed gladiator.

It also helps that the PSP was the hardcore RPG/visual novel handheld last generation, so there's probably a lot more folks on the Vita predisposed to buying games like Time Travelers than on the 3DS right now.  Even still, the Vita version only sold something like 300 copies more.

The PSP version releases next week so it will be interesting to see how that goes compared to Vita/3DS. Either way Level-5 shot themselves in the foot. They probably should have chose one platform to release TT on and stuck to it.

Poor Level-5. They seem to be having difficulty catching a break recently. Any prospect of that Fantasy Life game doing anything?

Kirby love in Japan! Rune Factory 4 is behind Pokemon, but 85k+ doesn't seem so bad.
