Nintendo Gaming / RE: Title Overload
« on: September 07, 2004, 10:31:07 AM »
I'll just wait until I can find them cheaper anyway, I'm in no hurry - I still have a bunch of older games I haven't got yet.  Really, I wonder if Nintendo could make higher profits pricing games at $30. I know I would buy a hell of a lot more games new.

This game sounds awesome.  Too bad I'm too damn cheap to spend $50 on anything.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: What a sequel should be...

AT LAST. Someone intelligent enough to understand my point. Yes, a good innovation is one the preserves the core purpose of the game & the fun. A bad innovation is one that destroys it and ruins the fun.

Nope, I think you misunderstood me entirely.  As KDR mentioned, your original post implied that just about any fundamental change to the original gameplay is poor design - that a sequel should be "more of the same".  You defined "bad" innovation as "completely different from the original game", using Mario Sunshine as an example - a game which many complained was *too* much like the original.  Thus, just about any significant change in a sequel is bad.  The above statement contradicts this sentiment, leaving me to what infinitesimal enhancements you consider to be "good innovation".

Quote

MP2 should be exactly like MP1, but with a new world to explore and cleaner control.

I disagree.  There should always be a *reason* for a sequel - some kind of genuine enhancement.  I'm not saying this has to be a huge change, but if MP2's only improvement was "cleaner control", I would not be interested at all.  I already have Metroid Prime, why would I want another?  Now, don't get me wrong;  changes can be a bad thing.  A good example, IMO, is WarCraft III - I just wasn't all that interested in levelling up heroes, as far as multiplayer was concerned.  Yet to list that as some sort of evidence that games should not innovate - except very slightly - is completely asinine.

I don't really care about this game.  I want innovation, and I'm waiting for Half-Life 2.  Sure, I wouldn't mind playing it if I found it used for $10, but other than that I don't really care.  I *would* like to play a demo though, just for a graphics tech demo.

Random battles in RPG's.  They should never have existed - period.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Do Older Games Suck?
« on: August 13, 2004, 05:18:59 PM »
I think some old games look, feel and play better than some modern games.  Yes, I said *look*.  For example, play Yoshi's Island, and then play Animal Crossing.  The difference is that Yoshi's Island is the pinnacle of 2D graphics, whereas Animal Crossing is primitive 3D.  (don't get me wrong, I love Animal Crossing - but not for its graphics)

Nintendo Gaming / RE: What a sequel should be...

DISCLAIMER:  I have not read this entire thread, so if someone stated this opinion before me, I apologize.

This is stupid.  Innovation can be either good or bad.  Good innovation is good.  Bad innovation is bad.  The question isn't whether they should innovate, it's HOW.  Listing all sequels that "innovated" in a way that displeased you isn't an argument, it's just mindless bitching.

General Chat / RE: Metriod Movie
« on: July 25, 2004, 11:29:40 AM »
There's no need to make this movie.  There's simply no way to do any kind of respect to the games filmically.  The game's charm comes from its silence, its loneliness, its mystery - and it has only one real character, with no dialogue (except for Fusion).  A Metroid film would be either boring as hell, or would be completely different from the game that it's based on.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Metroid Prime 2!!...2!...2......
« on: July 25, 2004, 11:15:47 AM »
Does anyone else think that multiplayer Metroid is completely pointless and unnecessary?  I think that unless they can do something that suits the style of the game - adventuring, upgrading, solving puzzles, etc - a multiplayer mode is a dumb idea.  I just don't see any need for another deathmatch - there are already far too many FPS deathmatch games. Maybe if it was something along the lines of Four Swords, I'd be more interested - maybe.

Nintendo seems to have decided that the average-at-best Mario Sunshine models are to be the standard Mario models that appear in every Cube game. I guess the SSBM model looked too good and it might encourage sales or something. I think reusing models is great because it cuts down dev time and maintains a consistent look across all the games. I just wish they didn't pick one that looked so asstastic.

What is so bad about the models?  I don't know about you, but I never was zoomed in enough in Mario Sunshine to think of Mario as anything but the pudgy, cartoony character he is.  Unless we're seeing close-ups of faces (in cut-scenes and such) I don't see any reason to change the models.  What Nintendo really needs to focus on is textures.  Some of the textures - particularly in SMS.

So let me get this straight - you've played and beaten *all* the good games on GCN?  There are always great games to play that you can find for $20 at any store.

I pretty much agree with this - I didn't like the analog controls on PS (what little I tried of it, anyway) but the idea is solid.  (I do like the regular PS1 controller - sans analog - pretty well though)

it was Sony who came up with the idea of two analog Control Sticks

True, but it does seem however, that it was a lame catch up effort on Sony's part. "You have analogue, well we have.........DUAL analogue!!! You have Rumble, well we have.......DUAL shock!!!

That's a bit unfair.  Don't get me wrong, analog control was a huge jump on N64 (SM64 and many other games simply wouldn't have been the same without it), but dual analog is pretty innovative too.  I always thought that it would be unwieldy (it is for me, on PS anyway) but the dual analog on GameCube (even with the tiny C-stick) is great for games like TimeSplitters 2, so Sony's idea works, if not the execution.   It's not just a matter of adding a second stick, either - playing with dual-analog is a *completely* different and very refreshing experience once you get used to it.  I personally would have never thought of dual-analog - it's very unique.  To me,  before using it it sounded as alien as using two keyboards to type with, or having a third hand coming out of my thigh.

Great list, by the way.  I appreciate the work!

Famitsu gave it 36/40 (two 8's, two 9's).

Slightly off-topic:  Does this game have random battles?

That's going to be hard to pull off but I think if anyone could do it it would be Nintendo. The best way to do this would be to make levels smaller and have only one or two objectives each (ie: one regular exit and one secret one). Instead of finding useless crap you explore the overworld to find new levels. The Bowser stages in Mario 64 and the super hard "Secret of" stages in Mario Sunshine are a good template to work from.

I agree, that would be excellent.  The linear stages in SMS were great.  A whole game of linear levels (though with actual backgrounds grounded in earth) would be amazing.  I want it extremely difficult, clever and addictive.

As for power-ups, I want power-ups that compliment the gameplay, not ones that are different to the point where they become a mini-game (like flying in SM64 - it was fun, sure, but only to a point).  Fireballs, feathers/leaves/capes (to float, not to fly), hammers and whatever else would be fun.

Yeah, well I was looking for a good angle with that pose to send into Nintendo themselves. I don't think any of the pictures really look good enough to use for a magazine ad or anything, unfortunately.

I don't know about an ad, but I bet Nintendo Power would love a letter/photo from you.  You might want to include a photo of the sword itself also, though.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: What really happened to Link?
« on: July 05, 2004, 09:27:24 PM »
Forgive me if somebody else has said this, I didn't read through all the posts -

I think Link (the younger version) simply grew up, had many adventures, and died of old age.  The Hero of Time was not a person, but a legend - and the people cried out for that legend, even though the actual person behind it was long gone.
