Oh man, oh man, the conspiracy continues. After some goggling I found some interesting results. Check it out.
First in 2004:

The Emmy for Outstanding Achievement in Advanced Media Technology for the Creation of Video Games was presented to:Jetix Cards Live! Enhanced TV
Seriously, WTF? I read and re-read, re-re-read to make sure they didn't mean something else. But sure enough it says video games and nothing else. Moving on to today:
"The awardees for Video Gaming and Technology are:
• Development and Impact in 8-Bit Consoles - Atari 2600 (Bolding mine. I'll let your imagination take over.)
• Development and Impact in Polygon Consoles - Sony (PS1)
• Development of Multiplayer Console Technology - Microsoft (XBOX Live)"
Some interesting quotes:
Quote
“Gaming and its particular needs have been a significant source of new technology in the areas of video- and television-centric activities. It comes as quite natural that this work should be recognized in the same way we’ve recognized the achievements in broadcast technology,”Seth Haberman, Chair of the Video Gaming and Technology awards panel said.
Quick comment: Perhaps they realized this when ratings were lower than usual, citing that more people are playing videogames as opposed to watching reality tv ad-nausem? Maybe they thought to give some recognition to a past time that's affecting their bottom line? Just a guess...
And for the coup de grace (Or death blow to non-french speaking people)

“In addition to Microsoft’s considerable achievements, I feel particularly proud that the committee was able to reach into the past and award an Emmy for the long overdue achievements of Sony and Atari.”
Source for this crapAgain, I'll let your imagination take over. Now if I can play devil's advocate for one second...
[DEVIL'S ADVOCATE MODE ON]
Remember kids, without Atari, there would be no industry for Nintendo to save. Gaming would probably still be played on bulky mainframe computers. Nolan Bushnell went on a limb on this one (As well as some 'selective' borrowing but that story's been told...).
Also, Nintendo seemed to be quite content in staying with its family friendly image. It wasn't acknowledging that its gamers from the 8-bit days were just a little older, albeit not a little wiser. Sega pounced on this (See Mortal Kombat I:Blood code). Sony pushed this foward with polygon boobies (See Battle Arena Toshinden, Tomb Raider *shudder*) coupled with a sense of cool that Nintendo [stilll] hasn't mastered to this day. Oh yeah, I guess Nintendo telling Sony to get bent when it came to sharing some of the profits back when the PSX was an add-on didn't help either. That and teaming with Philips, a foreign company which left the nation of Japan in deep shock. Oh how low did Nintendo go...
But hey, Mario's hotel and the two Zelda titles made it all worth it, right?
How about scaring away 3rd parties with sticking with the expensive cartridge format? And they had to retain some sort of quality? Perish the thought! Yamauchi didn't help much when he basically gave Squaresoft to Sony. But who knew FFVII, and Squaresoft in general would blow up to the level it did, right?
On the flip side, Sony invited anyone and everyone to their system with [later to-be easily copied] their disc format. Quality? Hey, that's an option. More games, more people with less than distinguishing taste. As long it was 3d (Symphony of the Night notwithstanding.), who cared?
[DEVIL'S ADVOCATE MODE OFF]
Though I gotta admit, MS did deserve its award for Xbox live. Its a fun experience, and not so laissez-faire(basically means lazy, letting it be) as Sony's model.
If it really bothers PGC'ers that much, why not drop a line to the people who organized this schindig? They have their e-mail address and phone numbers (with extensions, how nice...) at the bottom of the link I provided. Maybe the big N will get some props if the Rev controller takes off and makes regular controllers obsolete in the future.
