I would rate this as the stupidest movie I've seen in a long while had it not been based on true event as.

What the hell? Who could be so stupid as to believe a random caller not providing any sort of proof? Call me skeptical, but I would never believe such an idiotic phone call.

Not necessarily stupid. More like blind or learned obedience to authority figures and systems. Fear of losing ones job especially in America no doubt had an influence. I could go on, but it would get awefully political and make America look bad worse.

Why is that experiment considered so immoral? I've always wondered this.

Because you're pretty much traumatizing people for science, and some people don't understand the nobility of that.

Anyway, I saw Argo. Great movie. Best picture worthy? Well, I didn't see all of the nominees, but in a year where the best movies aren't "Oscar" movies, I'd say Ben Afflack got a good break. Most of the movie is a set up for the end scene, but it works because you get a good performance from Goodman (as if you'd ever get a bad one) as well as the rest of the cast. The hostages were fun to watch. Ending scenes were super suspenseful and worth it, provided you hadn't studied the night before.

8.5/10

That is cold. Real cold Oblivion.

It isn't the only authority experiment done, but it explains how terrible thingstm can happen on a small or grand scale. It certainly explains you and TJ.

Hey, now, don't put me in the same group as TJ. I just think that if the person they were "hurting" wasn't even real, who cares? They're the sheep for following what the scientist told them to do.

Well, even after being told the whole thing was fake (they were told, right?), they still had to live knowing that they WOULD hurt a dude (who begged for mercy) because another dude told them to.

I honestly wonder how a similar experiment would go today.

Yeah, Argo is a great movie but I still think Life of Pi was better. The end of that movie was devastatingly real; one that stays with you longer than Argo could ever hope.

I didn't any other nominees other than Django, but Django wasn't going to win it because of the weak third act.

As for Milgram, I don't see how that experiment was immoral either. It's terrible, but not immoral in the eyes of science. Finding our flaws is never immoral.

I think Life of Pi will better the next time I watch it and can really focus on the overall metaphor.

And I don't think the 3rd act was all of what held Django back.

It seems all too clean, despite the blood. But I've already said my piece about that.

And do yourself a favor and read the book. It's pretty short.

Speaking of Life of Pi, does anyone think that the movie would've have been better or worse if they had made it in the style of the book?

Science is neither moral or immoral. It's not a factor. Any morals that does exist for science is the ones we place upon it. Science is there to discover the underlying laws and facts about our universe, what we do with it is another question.

The truly horrifying thing about the Milgram experiments is the ease as to how you can get normal people to hurt another or even kill with only a little prompting. I doubt the result would be any different today. Milgram is bad, but there are worse experiments like the prison experiment that lead to straight up criminal abuses.

Django does have a weak final act and you are right that it wasn't it's only weakness. Django himself was largely a nonentity throughout the film with Fritz being the actual lead. It is understandable why it didn't win and I would have found it odd if it did. That said, the use of violence was masterful. When the violence was for "Good" it is almost cartoonish, cheerful even, but the opposite was just horrific.

Stoker - What was the complete point of this movie? I don't get it. I walked out in a confused stunned silence but not really seeing why.

Going to see Broken City hopefully this week.

I never got to see Broken City (hopefully today). Never got to see Cloud Atlas either as it's showing twice a day and was sold out completely. Saw Oz the Great and Powerful instead.

Rename the movie as "Family Guy: The Makings of Meg" and its better (and funnier) for it.

Oz the Great and Powerful - 7.5/10

I really liked this movie. For a prequel that comes out 74 years after the original, I think they did a really great job. Not sure what to say about it...it's obviously much more involved than the original given today's technology and movie audience. The only real disappointment was Mila Kunis after she turned into the Wicked Witch. Sure this takes places 33 years before the original, but she didn't look anything like Margaret Hamilton's version, aside from the skin color, her head looked too big and wide fr starters. Some of the CGI is pretty weak, but some of it is really good. The flying baboons also don't look like the flying monkeys in the original, but they do look like...baboons. Still, I highly recommend it if you like the 1939 movie. Never read the book so I can't say how it relates, but for a 3/4 century prequel, it's a good movie.

I'm glad you guys liked it. It's got a 45 on Metacritic and one of my friends HATED it. I still wanna see it though. I think people were expecting it to be the movie from 1939, and not anything modern.

What's putting me off watching it (apart from the CGI, which in the trailers at least looks terrible) is that I've never seen a film in which James Franco demonstrated any aptitude for acting.

I disagree on the CGI, it looks really good in the trailers. I intend to see the movie, even though it's gotten lukewarm reviews.
