When a studio has a slow gros for a movie, you'd think they would try to keep it in theaters longer

But if the movie is not doing well, it's hard to convince theatres to keep airing the movie instead of replacing it with another one.

I quite liked CLOUD ATLAS. Even if it was heavy handed and messy.

Finally seen Django yesterday. I had a blast, it was thoroughly enjoyable. I do have some criticisms; there was a point at which the film could have came to a natural conclusion, but Tarrantino drags it out for another 30 minutes with no real purpose, the central character of Django doesn't actually have much of a character until the final scenes, and certain scenes go on longer than they should. Despite those quibbles though, I thought it was a really good film. It's not up to the standards of Inglorious in my opinion, but it's still really well made and surprisingly funny.

I saw it yesterday too. Was it the point when Schultz shoots Candie simply because he cannot shake his hand to complete the transaction and said "I can't do it!" followed by being shot himself? If it was, that was the point when the film basically said WE DONT NEED YOU ANYMORE! and dumped the character but didn't have a way to do it without breaking what the character had established.

Indeed. It was right after that scene that I got the impression that Tarrantino did not know how to end it.

It's almost as if the only thing he could think of was to have the plantation house be blown up, but then he realised that neither Django or Dr Shultz had brought any dynamite. So he haphazardly delays the movie for 30 minutes so that Django can get free, come into posession of some dynamite, and then return to the house to finish off what remained of those who survived.

That might be me reading too much into it, but everything after Dr Shultz' death seemed aimless to me. Django gives himself up, get's threatened with torture but ultimately gets sent off to work to death in a mine, but manages to talk his way out of it, and returns to the house to kill everyone he hadn't already killed. Narratively, it's just lazy. The film reached a natural conclusion with the death of Candie and Shultz. Instead of breaking up the gun fight into two parts, they should have just given Django his hero moment and ended the film there in my opinion.

Still really enjoyed it though. Christoph Waltz was amazing as ususal.

Christoph Waltz, Samuel L Jackson and Leonardo di Caprio totally nailed their roles.

But i do agree: the film felt like it was going to end with him being re-captured and a sharp cut-to-black, but it didnt and went off on a tangent to get back to the house and put him "on top".

Django

in the script the ending goes down a little bit different. Django gets hauled off by the aussies. Then he kills them then grabs tnt. Blows up the house and then kills everyone at the funeral. Also, theres a scene with django and stephen cut out. In this scene it further illustrates the adversarial relation between django and stephen. Django beats up stephen for talking back to him in private. theres another scene  where candy wins broomhilda in a card bet.

Beasts of the Southern Crap Wild: Turned it off a half-hour in/10

Screw this movie. I hated every character. EVERY character. The father a jerk who shouldn't be a father, the daughter is...I don't even know how to describe her, but I couldn't stand her. When her daddy yelled at her that one time, her immediate reaction was TO SET FIRE TO HER HOUSE, (highlight to read) which is when I said "eff you, kid, and eff this movie."

The other thing that irritated the sh*t out of me was the constant invoking of the fearsome "Aurochs."

The aurochs is a real animal, and it IS prehistoric. However, it's a bovine that formed the base of the modern domestic cattle. In fact, many "primitive" breeds of cattle, like the Spanish Fighting Bulls, still largely resemble aurochs. You know what an aurochs is NOT? A tusked, pig-like nightmare beast that hunted cavemen. God LORD that part of the movie made me mad. Why even BRING UP an aurochs is you're not going to use it correctly? Why not go with a goddamn saber-tooth tiger or short-faced bear?

WHY ARE YOU LYING ABOUT AN ANIMAL YOU THINK HAS A COOL-SOUNDING NAME?

Anyway, I turned the movie off not long after Honeybear (or whatever her backcountry bayou name was) cut her hand while trying to smack a bullhead. "This isn't going to get any better," I said.

LOL, somehow it was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. I think it only got nominated because it's the typical crap that the older base who are members of the Academy like (the nominations and winners are usually jokes). No chance of winning, I had never heard of it before it was nominated and it looks bad.

I really enjoyed BotSW. The acting was superb, particularly that of the young actress who played Hushpuppy, and the cinematography was beautiful. I also thought that the fictional post-apocalyptic setting gave a unique mood to what was effectively a tale of growing up.

My only real criticism of the film is that I found it's ecological message to be a little trite. However, watched as a character study with an interesting framing device (I'd be interested to hear whether or not you accepted the Aurochs as anything more than a young girl's imagination) I think it's a fantastic film.

The fact that BotSW received Oscar recognition at least takes the sting out of the fact that The Master was largely ignored in all the big categories.

Well, The Master was also a commercial flop in theatres (budget was $35 million, it only made $20 million).

That really surprises me. The Master might not be as substantive as There Will Be Blood, or as refreshing as Punch-Drunk Love, but Hoffman, Adams and Phoenix absolutely nailed their roles and it was perhaps one of the most visually appealing films I've ever seen. For me that goes a long way.

I wonder how it done internationally.

Pretty poorly. I looked up the officially numbers, it made $16,057,745 domestically and $7,647,215 internationally. To be fair though, the movie never got to be in more than 864 theatres.

The Theives (a korean movie): 8/10

This movies runs a little long for its own good, but it's well worth the ride. It's a hybrid of Ocean's Eleven, Snatch and a Korean movie. I recommend it to anyone looking for a good foreign film.

There is one scene in particular that stands out where this man and woman are trying to get away from a casino. Bad ass.

Has anyone seen either: Mama, Movie 43 or A Haunted House?

The not really interested in any of them but I have a date tonight and want to know what I'm getting into with either of these. I've either seen everything else currently out or have absolutely zero interest in the rest, so these are my options.
