Where on their site did you see 60%? The 60% number I have seen was before they added Walmart (which provided a big bump).

VGChartz does not have access to any numbers that aren't available to the public. They don't get numbers from anyone. You or I have access to the same info they do, plain and simple.

Where is reliable data that Other M hit 1 million? The most reliable info we have was from 2010 when Nintendo said it was less than 500K. Since then, all you have are people making up numbers for what they think it has done.

It's also possible that XenoBlade's limited release has caused everyone who was interested to rush out and get it to make sure they secure a copy, something that wouldn't have happened with a wider release. Plus, some people bought extras to sell on eBay.

That's pretty much why I ordered my copy.  Otherwise, I would have waited for the inevitable clearance bin.

"2010 when Nintendo "  Sigh and since then it continued to sell mostly because of the discounted price.

And you'll have to look into NPD blog's Question and Answer--they talk about how they calculate % in each area.  Vgcharts does the same.  Most of the sources are the same hense similar numbers--for example last month Vgcharts pegged KI (3ds) at 134K for the month of March while NPD had it at 135K.  If Vgchartz was simply making up numbers than they wouldn't be hitting even close to that mark and they posted their numbers first so it's not like they had access prior to NPD.

Again, VG Chartz makes guesses. Sometimes they are close, other times they are vastly off (hell, GAF has a prediction thread every month and sometimes people guess the exact number right). They don't have access to any numbers from retailers.

Not that I doubt you, TJ, but can you cite an example of a time where VGChartz was "vastly off" - and provide credible sources for your example?

Well, here is VGChartz saying Call of Duty: Black Ops sold 7 million on launch day. http://www.vgchartz.com/article/82685/call-of-duty-black-ops-sells-7-million-copies-on-day-one/

Not here is ACTIVISION (the publisher of the game) saying they sold 5.6 million on launch day: http://www.thatvideogameblog.com/2010/11/11/activision-black-ops-sells-5-6m-in-day-one-beats-mw2/

VGC posted their numbers first, BTW.

Another example VGChartz stating Gran Turismo numbers: http://media.giantbomb.com/uploads/0/1348/1628604-screen_shot_2010_11_10_at_8.36.32_pm_super.png

vs. what series developer Polyphony Digital says: http://media.giantbomb.com/uploads/0/1348/1628605-screen_shot_2010_11_10_at_8.36.39_pm_super.png

Okay then.  Whenever I post numbers from VGChartz, I always post the disclaimer that I'm using "made up numbers from VGChartz".

However, without a better, more accurate source, I see no issue with someone using VGChartz estimates - so long as everyone agrees that they are estimates and not factual numbers set in stone.

From your own links that you posted:
From The publisher:
"In North America and the UK alone, the shooter has brought in $360 million and sold over 5.6 million copies, beating Modern Warfare 2‘s $310 million / 4.7 million copies record."

From Vgchartz:
"Breaking the data down, we estimate over 3.6 million units were sold in the USA, 1.4 million units in the UK, over a million units in continental Europe and 350,000 units in Canada. Xbox 360 takes the largest proportion of sales with 59%, 36% for PS3 and the remainder on PC, Wii and DS."

So Vgchartz estimated 5.35 million and the publisher estimated 5.6 million? A difference factor of less than 5%.

We had a thread on VGChartz once.

We took their numbers they posted over 2 months and compared them to the officially released numbers of NPD and then saw how they differed.

VGChartz was off by quite a bit on quite a few of them, and then we saw how they adjusted their numbers, after the fact, to be more inline with NPD's.

It was a that point that we had agreed that while we may not have a better centralized and compiled source for numbers, that VGChartz was still far from an accurate source.

The founder of that site was constantly asked for where he was getting his numbers long before he started the site(he refused to say), and it was because the numbers he would cite were almost always off from official sources and then would be adjusted to be closer to them once official numbers had become public. It was very suspicious, especially since the site he was involved in takes their sales info very seriously.

I've said it before: data that you know is questionable is, in many ways, worse than no data at all. We as a site have a policy against using VGChartz numbers for anything for the reasons BnM pointed out. While they may be right sometimes, they're wrong at least as often, so using them as the basis for an argument or point is fundamentally flawed.

Yeah, I remember that thread well, it was an interesting experiment, I don't recall how off they were on average. They are probably far more reliable in using them as a quick reference for Japanese sales due to the weekly top 20 lists.

EA and BioWare's Mass Effect 3 was the highest-selling game title in the U.S. during April, says the report, followed by Activision's Prototype 2 and Nintendo-published Xenoblade Chronicles.

A Gamasutra writer points out here that this is the PiperJaffrey predicted top 10:
Quote
  • Mass Effect 3 (>500K) (Originally said ME2, that's a typo)
  • Prototype 2
  • Xenoblade Chronicles
  • The Witcher 2
  • Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja
  • NBA 2K12
  • Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
  • Street Fighter X Tekken
  • Mario Party 9
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (~100K)[/l][/l]
The biggest thing missing from this list, for instance, is Kinect Star Wars. (Though if it is absent, that may be seen as proof of the existence of a loving deity.)

Well there wasn't that many big games released in April so it'll probably be a low number month.  If Xenoblade just managed to get over 100k that would probably be enough to get in the top 10.  Of course surpassing 100k would be great numbers for Xenoblade's first month.

If Xenoblade did manage that well then the rumors of Gamestop getting Pandora's Tower latter this year could indeed be true then.

Golden Week holiday sales cause crazy things to happen as games such as Mario Kart Wii, Wii Party, and Go Vacation climb back in to the top 20. Mario Party 9 holds steady to take the #1 spot while Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City takes 2nd place. Fire Emblem: Awakening seems to be doing nicely at #3. The 3DS 2011 Japan Winter Holiday Trinity and Kid Icarus: Uprising take spots 4-7. Kingdom Hearts 3D looks like it's hanging in there, and Pokemon Conquest sells nicely over the holiday week.
