Didn't PSP beat the DS in YTD according to Media Create?

DS moved ahead in the last 2 weeks of the year.

And that's the last chance the PSP will ever have, because the PSP/DS generation is about at an end. Soon it will be time for the 3DS' reign of terror to begin.

Credit where credit's due; the PSP came far, far closer than I would have expected even last year.

That's exactly what it is.  When the Wii has 7 games in the top 20 and the PS3 has none, and yet the PS3 is selling over 10k more then the Wii, that makes it pretty obvious what people are really buying the PS3 for now.

It's just like how before Monster Hunter revived the PSP in Japan, the hardware was the only thing selling with no games in not only Top 20, but some weeks Top 50.  Before Monster Hunter gave the mainstream gaming audience a reason to buy the PSP in Japan, everyone else was buying the system only to pirate, just like the rest of the world still does.

Well if Nintendo was in a situation where they were selling hardware and no software was moving (granted that this is only 1 week and only the Top 20), and a major security hole was just punched through their system to allow easy use of FREE/illegal alternatives in place of Retail/legal avenues, then the Wii2 would have happened yesterday.

If the hardware hack was the inspiration to jump to the PS4 at this point I would be pretty annoyed.  From a hardware perspective the PS3 has the legs to go on for a while.  We don't need another $600 system and we also don't need a chincy nothing upgrade done entirely to avoid a hack either.  I want a real step up and I want it done when such hardware is affordable.  If generations have to become longer to accomodate this then so be it.  It'll be nice to have some stability.

But I think partially why I would be annoyed is I think for Nintendo to catch up we really need Sony and MS to stay put for a while.  Otherwise I figure Nintendo will go up to PS3 level with the Wii 2 and immediately get leapfrogged and then the same stupid third party problem happens again.  I don't want Nintendo to be perpetually behind and they realistically need two gens in the span of everyone else's one gen to prevent that.

Unlikely to happen, development costs are so high now, PS3 and 360 are pretty much pushing it for visuals. The next "leap" isn't going to be that major unless it is the PS4 Holodeck version.

I know.  So what would a PS4 be if they released one now?  The same thing but with Move built-in and the hack fixed?

Sony probably will release a revision of the PS3 that will fix the hack (if possible), and integrate move. I would predict we will see this revision by the end of the year, and perhaps only in a few months. Other improvements will include a smaller size/weight over the slim, and possibly a reduction in price due to the drop in manufacturing costs.

But it won't be the PS4.

To my understanding of the hack, to fix it, Sony would break compatibility with all other games that currently work on PS3.
It's unfixable for PS3 and likely means that PS4 won't be directly BC.

He probably means we could see a PS3 that has its own USB slot for the camera somewhere near the back of the machine or some such thing that better integrates the Move's various external parts.  I've mentioned this before, but the Slim model only has 2 USB slots.  If you have a Move (and I've been thinking of picking one up lately for Dead Space Extraction, Heavy Rain, and Resident Evil 5 Gold), that damn camera devours one of those 2 slots at all times.  That leaves you with one USB slot to accommodate/charge a Dualshock 3, a Move wand, and a Nav controller.  It's incredibly clunky, and ideally a future hardware iteration would restore more USB slots to the machine to alleviate that.

Yeah, for some bizarre reason Sony stripped out 2 USB ports when they put out the Slim.  My original PS3 had 4 as well (as well as multiple SD card slots, which are also gone from the Slim), but my new replacement Slim only has 2.  I wonder if Sony gave any thought to the ramifications to Move when they designed the Slim, because it's such an obvious oversight.
