Money is money.  If Capcom can make big money with MH on the PSP, why do they need to put it on the DS?  Yeah it is the more popular handheld but if you can make a good sized profit on another system you don't HAVE to support the market leader.  There might be other factors involved, like how the PSP has much more powerful hardware.

It all depends on how much money you want to make. Yeah, its been profitable on the PSP, but do you want to make profit or do you want to make a lot of profit? I would think any company would want to make as much as possible, and the way to do that is target the larger install base.

And as far as "superior" hardware is concerned, the DS has a touchscreen so it is superior in that respect.

EA's CEO believes Nintendo needs a price cut.

Quote

I think they’ve now got competition, in the form of gesture-based gaming from Sony and Microsoft. If they were to find ways to promote third-party content better, as opposed to first-party content, and would hit pricing, I think the platform would see new life

I think it’s a frustration for all third-party publishers, when a platform holder does less to promote third-party content. A great third-party company is Apple, a company that’s all third-party content. There’s often tension in a company between first- and third-party content. Nintendo’s unique in the world. They’re a great company because of the blend of first- and third-party content. First-party hardware, first-party content is what makes them great, but it’s actually pretty tough. I can come up with a dozen titles in the last decade, but it’s really tough to come up with a dozen great titles that have been platform defining for them that weren’t their own. I don’t care whether it’s Mario or Twilight Princess or GoldenEye; it was their own content. I’m going back to N64, and I can go back to SNES if you want, but they’ve never really been a heavy third-party supporting system. It’s not lack of trying; they start the morning thinking what’s best for their own intellectual property

Well at least he didn't demand WiiHD.

However the rest of his comments come from an attitude that will only hold his company back.

After Dead Space Extraction and NBA Jam, EA is one of the last companies to be blaming Nintendo about their games not selling.  After giving the system a spinoff that nobody wanted and announcing that a Wii game will be getting a superior HD port released only one month after the Wii version should pretty much show them why they're games fail.

Not to mention doing everything they could to sabotage their sports games on the Wii by constantly changing the gameplay and then releasing that All Play crap that basically made the games look inferior to all the other systems, didn't help either.  When the PS2 versions of Madden are still outselling the Wii versions, that shows EA f*cked up bigtime.

There's a reason why EA's best selling games on the Wii were Tiger Woods Golf and Bloom Blocks.  Because those were the only games they actually put effort and quality as well as games that appealed to an audience on the Wii and as a result, these games actually got good sales.  Everything else they've released is either an inferior version of an HD game, or a spinoff that there was no audience for and as a result these games got poor sales.

Not really rocket science to see why EA isn't getting big sales on the Wii.

Part of it comes down to publishers having different ideas of what sales numbers equal a commercial success. In the days of multi-million blockbusters, 100,000 copies sold looks pretty unimpressive, but that's moderately successful really. Most projects would easily break even on 100,000 units sold, as it's only a minority that need massive sales to account for the abnormal expenditure during development.

Superior hardware to port to. A lot of the content in the Monster Hunter Portable games can be traced back to the PS2 games. With Portable 3rd, I imagine it isn't too much trouble to cram Tri assets in to the PSP. If Capcom were to make a Monster Hunter for DS, they would probably have to make a whole new game from the ground up. Can you really blame Capcom for taking the easy way out?

As an aside, the Monster Hunter Frontier online game for the PC looks like a cleaned up and sharpened PS2 game. I think it looks kinda nice.

Let's say I'm a developer and I want to make a portable game.  I want a certain graphic quality for the game and I don't give two shits about touchscreen controls.  If I can make a profit making the game I want to make for the PSP, why would I bother with a DS release if I would have to scale down the graphics to do it?  It's just that simple.

Regarding EA, they have not done much to win over the Wii userbase.  But at the same time they're not wrong about Nintendo's priorities being entirely self-centered.  Realistically all parties are at fault.  Third parties put in a weak effort but Nintendo doesn't really care about that and makes no real effort to accomodate or encourage them.  Wii third party support is a low priority to pretty much everyone who can actually do something about it.

To be fair to Nintendo, they have made efforts in the past to promote third party content, only to have the third party sabotage the effort (I'm looking at you Capcom 5).  And I don't see EA winning any favours from Nintendo after what they pulled with NBA Jam.  But to suggest that Nintendo has no interest in third party success is wrong.  I seem to remember them releasing a special MH3 bundle, as well as producing a unique gold controller for Goldeneye 007.  The lesson here is that legitimate system sellers will get attention from Nintendo.

But this EA guy's attitude seems to be that they should be owed the support.  Well I don't know how you get to be a CEO without learning that in business, you don't get any favours without providing something in return.  And really, EA's games this gen haven't provided anything substantial for the Wii.  They don't make system sellers, with the exception of Madden, and in that case they're only selling the competition's consoles because they were cheap with the Wii version.

What I find most hilarious is his belief that Nintendo should lower the cost of the Wii, so that EA can sell to a larger userbase.  I suspect that he thinks that the reduced price will result in more 'multiple-console-owners', however that won't lead to more Wii EA game sales because they design their games such that you're encouraged to buy the PS3/360 version.  Here's an idea, if you want to sell more copies, how about you lower the price of your games?  Oh right, you want to eat that cake.

The answer is that you wouldn't, but that wasn't his question.  He wants to know why if you wanted to maximize your profits, you wouldn't target the largest install base.  In your scenario, all you want to do is make the game you want, so long as it turns a profit.  Well if you want to make a lot of profit, often you're going to have to make a game that's not exactly your ideal.  I imagine that most auto-engineers would prefer to work on Mercedes-type cars, but someone has to make the Camrys.  And note that this doesn't preclude the Camry from being a good car, nor something the engineer can be proud of.  I imagine this often becomes an issue between the developers and publishers.

I think they’ve now got competition, in the form of gesture-based gaming from Sony and Microsoft. If they were to find ways to promote third-party content better, as opposed to first-party content, and would hit pricing, I think the platform would see new life

But the Wii already is significantly cheaper than the competition as it is. If you buy a Wii for $199 you get the motion controls immediately. To do so on the competition you have to pay $299 (or get the cheap xbox), and then on top of that you have to plonk down another $100+. So to get the Wii motion option you only have to pay $199 and that's it, but on the other systems its more like $400. That's twice as much, so the Wii is already half as much as the competition as it is.

And as far as the Wii seeing "new life" that depends on companies like EA getting off their ass and actually making games that are worth a crap instead of whining about Nintendo needing to drop the price on a console which is already the cheapest anyway.

"In summary, it would be easy to blame ourselves, but it is even easier to blame Nintendo!"

Same old song and dance we've been hearing for the last 15+ years. Nothing new.

But what really pisses me off is that Nintendo managed to beat the odds and make the most successful system even despite this bullshit, but they never got credit for it. Now, the competition has its own ripoff motion control schemes and Wii sales aren't what they are used to be, so now 3rd parties are coming back out of the woodwork to slam Nintendo once again. When Nintendo does well they ignore them, but when Nintendo is doing not so well they get slammed.

Its like some hero in a story that faces some Herculean task and manages to pull through despite everyone turning their backs on them, but its worse than that because in the stories when the Hero wins he gets praised for it and everyone admits they were wrong about him. But with Nintendo its not like that, because even when they win they don't get credit for it from these assholes.

Higher than the DS, or the white-hot 360?  The general rule for most consoles is that December = 2 x November, so are you expecting that the 360 will underperform or that the Wii will overperform?

Wii will over perform.

Judging by the amount of systems we sold with the $50, then $75 Gift Card promos.  Which was an estimated metric s*** ton.

The Wii is finally back ahead of PS3 for YTD, so it may still end up #1 for 2010 (among consoles).

Indeed. And there's all the signs of a commercially healthy Christmas, with several Wii and DS games increasing on week-to-week sales.

I hope Ni no Kuni does well in the long run. The chances of its localisations are bleak to say the least, unless Level 5 has unexpected plans for its new Western branches.

Nice to see that Donkey Kong did about the same it's second week as the first week.  Looks like Nintendo was able to successfully reignite Donkey Kong Country nostalgia in Japan.  The game should have no problem crossing the million mark now.

I told you all Kirby would have good legs in Japan.  It's already on it's way to being one of the more successful Kirby spinoff games, so it'll be interesting to see if it can keep going and reach the numbers of the traditional games.

Because you are not in charge of deciding the company strategy. If the higher ups decide that they will likely see a higher return on investment with a DS game then they will only give you the money if you make a DS game.

However I don't think it's feasible to put MH on the DS, the hardware would probably require some changes to the game design (and if it's just the perspective) which would risk hurting the cash cow that is MH (I'm not convinced that Capcom knows for sure what made MH the success it is so they'll likely avoid changes). Once the 3DS is out you can expect Capcom to throw MH on there as fast as their arms allow.

Wow, so pretty much everyone who actually wanted World of Warcraft: Cataclysm bought it the first week since it dropped from #1 to #39.
