Nintendo should be more aggressively pushing the balance board. Its selling mainly to people wanting to get fit, but it has a lot more potential than as a digital exercise machine. If you think about it, the balance board (if used in conjuction with the wiimote and/or chuck) has the same sort of capabilities as Kinect, and came out well before Kinect did so it has a good start.

I just don't think Nintendo is making as good of use out of it as they could. The balance board is something that can still set Nintendo apart from Sony's Move imitator. So far the balance board hasn't been stolen by anyone, so its still a Nintendo innovation. But where are the games for it?

Forget the Balance Board, there are even more Motion Plus out there as it's being pushed as some kind of new standard, yet Nintendo isn't really backing it up with games.

Maybe Nintendo plans to reveal that the Wii2 actually lets you use M+ controllers so this is their way of getting a stealth jump on things.

Fallout New Vegas trumping Medal of Honor (2010). Nice.

Sad to see Kirby's Epic Yarn and Vanquish not making it in to the top ten. I guess it was to be expected.

Also of note is Wii Party not making it. It was a hit in Japan but I figured it'd sell more like Wii Music here in North America, and it looks like I was right.

I wonder how much the new NPD combining all these different versions of these games had to do with some notable games being excluded from the list.  I'm surprised and sad to not see Castlevania: Lords of Shadow get in the Top 10 (really, it didn't even crack 225,000 units sold between 2 platforms?), because it is an awesome game.  I also thought Vanquish might have had a chance to crack the Top 10, though I guess it's to be expected that it missed the Top 10.  I'm also very surprised to see NBA 2K11 of all games at #1, though I gather that having so many versions of the game (and Michael Jordan) certainly helped.

As for Kirby, no one expected that game would sell well, though I'm happy that Nintendo took a chance on it.

Castlevania Lord of Shadow was likely too much of a departure for most from what they are used to with a Castlevania game and that likely hurt sales. You are right though, this list is kind of silly since they combine multiplatform games together which artificially boosts ranks of games. With Kirby, that could very likely turn into a game that is a slow burn title as word of mouth spreads. Just hope DKC:R does well this month!

Slow burn games might generate revenue, but it does look bad psychologically speaking when Nintendo's A+ material fails to get into the top 10 because of a flood of ridiculous sports crap that is actually nothing more than a roster upgrade, yet it is packaged and sold as if it were a brand new game. That's how it is with the NBA game, the Madden game, the FIFA game, and yes even the WWE Smackdown vs. Raw games.

All of those games are basically the exact same thing as their 2010 predecessors, but now with a new and improved 2011 rooster update. Maybe a few other minor tweaks here and there as well, but does it justify a new game when whatever is changed could have just been offered by a patch or DLC instead? It seems like a ripoff to me, but of course I don't buy sports games (mainly for that reason).

But I'm just ranting because it pisses me off that this is what comprises the monthly Top 10, but then a quality original game like Kirby is nowhere to be seen.

And speaking of sports games, why isn't NBA Jam in the top 10? Unlike the other sports games, this actually wasn't a mere roster upgrade, but something that hasn't been seen in many years so therefore its new. It just doesn't seem right to me.

Yeah, those roster update sports games will probably drop off the top 10 next month, but we go through this same damn generic crap every month. The more things change the more they stay the same. You know, its like every month the sales charts get a "roster update", but where's the beef? Next month its going to be some other generic crap in the Top 10, while meanwhile Kirby will be slowburning somewhere below the Top 10. Kirby will outlast the roster updates, and will be very profitable for Nintendo... but like I said, psychologically speaking it just doesn't look right for it to not be on the top 10, ever.

I can't speak for the other sports games on the Top 10, but if you haven't played NBA 2K11 yourself I wouldn't call it "generic" with "just a roster update".  It's a pretty full-fledged game, and a quality one at that with lots of features.  It's also the start of the NBA Season, so of course it sold better across 6 platforms than a cutsy Kirby Wii game whose biggest claim to fame in its advertisements is how adorable it is.  Kirby just doesn't have the nostalgic draw of something like New Super Mario Bros. Wii or even the upcoming Donkey Kong Country Returns.  Like I said, I'm curious how this list would have ended up if we were still using the "one SKU, one spot" NPD list.

NBA JAM isn't in the Top 10 because most of its audience is probably waiting for the HD versions that just released.

Well lets construct a plausible partial single SKU list

1. Fallout: New Vegas (360) - 679k
2. Fable III **(360) MICROSOFT   - 580k
3. NBA 2k11 (360) ~470k?
4. Medal of Honor (360) ~450k?
5. NBA 2k11 (PS3) ~380k?
6. Medal of Honor (PS3) ~360?
7. Fallout: New Vegas (PS3) - 331k
8. Halo: Reach **(360) MICROSOFT - 315k
9. Just Dance 2 (WII)    UBISOFT - 286k
10. Kirby' Epic Yarn or Rock Band 3 ~195k?

That's just my guess at what it might look like though.

We also have to remember that Kirby has had a less then impressive showing in the last few games. So it likely has a slight image problem now as well.

I think Kirby's Dreamland 3 for the SNES is the most recent Kirby game I own.  Even as a Nintendo fan he's never been high on my list of priorities.  Epic Yarn is a potential someday kind of purchase.  Like I figure it's good and I'll probably like it but there is no urgency for me to buy it right now.  I think I'll get it at some point but then, maybe not.  Game purchases I put off often never actually happen.

Maybe that's how others see Kirby as well.  You know his games are usually good but you don't need them right this second like you do with Mario or Zelda.  When a new Mario or Zelda is due to drop we're all buzzing about it on this forum.  You never really see that with Kirby.

Has Kirby ever been a good seller in North America? I don't recall any Kirby game ever being huge, and most of the games are a little hard to find compared to other Nintendo names. Of course, they usually release late in a system's life so the series hasn't really had that much of a chance of becoming popular. It's a shame, because the game's concepts are great and still have a lot of potential.

I think Kirby's Dreamland 3 for the SNES is the most recent Kirby game I own.
Lucky. I've always wanted the cartridge for Kirby's Dream Land 3 but it is too expensive for my taste.

Wow, Tony Hawk: Shred bombed hard if the three versions only sold a combined 3K.

Why is Wii Sports Resort with Wii MotionPlus tracked differently? It's the exact same game. Nice to see Wii back ahead.

Are you talking about this?
09.   /   00.    [WII]   Wii Sports Resort (w/ Wii RemotePlus)   (Nintendo)    - 14.438    / NEW
It's the new bundle with the Wii Remote Plus, not a Motion Plus accessory.

Again, it's the exact same game. Yet they stupidely bundle two different Pokemon games.

So did the Red Wii bundle hit in Japan the last tracked week? It nearly doubled the PS3, which hasn't happened much at all this year.

Which 2 pokemon games would that be?
and I mean different pokemon games that were stupidly bundled together.

Interesting to see that the DS is approaching that 45million mark Reggie said the Wii would need to be at before they start talking about its successor.
Silly monkeys; give them thumbs they make a club and beat their brother down. How they survive so misguided is a mystery. Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability to lift an a eye to heaven conscious of his fleeting time here.
