Well, Nintendo's loss was from currency exchange, whereas Sony was still able to turn a profit. Clearly this means Nintendo's stronger in the larger overseas markets and is therefore in a better position than Sony.

It makes sense. The PS3 has trailed for 4 straight years now, so it has plenty of ways it can (and has) gained momentum and provided a profit for Sony. Meanwhile, after so much success and breaking sales records, Nintendo have nowhere to go but down. They're still likely going to post a profit on the year though, so it really isn't an issue.

I was hoping the Wii would catch up to the PS2. You can't say it has nowhere to go but down because it hasn't reached that milestone yet... the PS2 did, so it could be done.

We won't see the Wii hit PS2 levels until after the next Nintendo system at the earliest if even at all. The PS2 sold well during the opening years of the PS3. If the Wii2 is a big enough hit then we won't see the same thing happen to the original Wii.

The Wii was selling at a faster rate than the PS2 did, so yes, I can say that. If you look at the Sony numbers posted, the PS2 shipped about 47 million units after the PS3 launched. The only way the Wii will outsell the PS2 is if either Nintendo doesn't release a new system for five more years, or they put out a ridiculously expensive system with features that the average consumer doesn't care about. The former sounds more plausible.

i think the wii will catch the ps2 once nintendo lowers the price to 129.99, that will reach mass market masses.

That really depends on what Nintendo decides to do with the Wii 2. If they make something along the lines of the 3DS, with a mass market gimmick, but mostly catering to gamers, and at a higher price, I could definitely see a budget-priced Wii continuing to sell very well to casuals.

You have to also remember that a lot of those PS2s were 2nd and 3rd systems for some people as their's either broke or they wanted to switch to the slim system.  Since the Wii has an account assigned to each specific Wii, there is no real incentive for people to buy a new system outside of those that don't buy WiiWare/VC games.

I have a feeling that the number of people who purchased a replacement system is negligible, it's just something people say to make excuses. Besides, it isn't like people haven't bought new Wii systems when theirs broke; just ask around this forum and you'll find some people who purchased more than one system.

How a system sold is irrelevant to the numbers. If you want to talk userbase, that's a different topic.

I think it's bigger than you think, especially with the 360.  There were a lot of people who didn't realize that the warranty was 3 years on that system.  So they would buy a new one.
With the PS2, launch systems were known to die within 3-4 years, right around the time the PS2 cost about $150 on store shelves.  So either send it in to Sony to fix for $150 or buy a newer, more reliable system for the same price.  I'm guessing a lot of people went with the latter option. A lot of people also replaced their PS2 when the Slim model came out.
I would not be surprised if a lot of people are replacing their 360s again with the new slim model out.

It's still conjecture and speculation unless you have some numbers to support your claims. All systems have failure rates and repeat buyers, so in the end I think it all evens out. Besides, since we're simply talking sales numbers and not userbase, I'm not sure what your point is.

Now the PS3 is selling over twice as many units per week as the Wii. Is anyone still saying this isn't something to worry about? It looks like the PS3 is on track to beat the Wii in YTD sales. Granted, the Wii will still have the lead in LTD sales, but if this trend continues long enough even that lead will be gone.

No need to mock - it's just further justification for third parties to ignore the console. I'm not trying to pretend like is anyone's lead console besides Nintendo, I'm just saying that this is more fodder.

They don't need further justification. They already stopped caring, and the ones that are still there care a hell of a lot more about the sales of their own games than further sales of the hardware.

I applaud you for that excellent piece of sarcasm, and it did make me laugh. However, Brandogg does have a point... because as bad as third party support for the Wii is, it still could get worse. At least the Wii is getting some quality exclusives like Epic Mickey and so forth, which is something we didn't see much of on the GC. If developer confidence in the Wii were to drop bad enough we would not only see an absence of the Wii exclusives, but we would probably also see the loss of more multiplatform support as well, because it is a well known fact that porting a title for the Wii involves more effort than to the 360/PS3/PC and the only reason why a lot of developers are investing the effort in that is precisely because of the Wii's popularity which makes it worth the effort. But that could change over time... its fine for the moment, but if this continues over a period of months its going to be very damaging to the market's confidence in the Wii.

I really don't think they care that much about the month-to-month sales of the console at this point. Their decisions about Wii support are based on how well their Wii games have sold, not the hardware.

I think 3rd party support is actually getting better. We got feature and release parity on CoD Black Ops. Goldeneye is turning out to be a top notch shooter exclusively for Wii. We also have Epic Mickey. Don't forget that the flagship SKU for Guitar Hero titles is the Wii as well.

It's not the best support in a long shot but it is better than even a year ago (delayed titles like Modern Warfare, gimped versions, no releases on Wii, ports of old games...NPC titles... ;) ).
