Didn't EA do some sort of "All-Play" thing with their sports games that caused their sales to decrease?

Yes, in 2008. Coincidentally, sales started nosediving right about then.

I'm surprised the Wii version of Madden isn't on the charts, seeing as how the ones for PS3/360 are at the very top of the charts and the Wii has a much larger install base. Hell, even the PS2 version is on the charts. I understand that the Wii version is likely inferior to the PS3/360 edition, but is it really inferior to the PS2 release??

PS2 has a larger install base than the Wii.  If you go purely by sales.

Madden for Wii has been consistently good over the years. I'd argue Madden 07 was the best use of motion controls at launch besides Wii Sports. EA just keeps making bad decisions in the marketing of them.

Nobody should say anything about Other M's sales until it's second week numbers come out.  Fusion put up similar number in it's first week but had good legs and went on to sell over 150,000 copies in Japan.  While Zero Mission first week number were lower than Other M and it sold somewhere in the 70/80k range.

So it'll be interesting to see if Other M ends up like Fusion or Zero Mission in Japan

That still wouldn't be good. This is the game that was supposed to make Metroid popular in Japan, if it doesn't increase popularity there while alienating western gamers it's a failure.

I hope Metroid does get popular in Japan. I understand that in order to gain that popularity sacrifices would have to be made that would anger or annoy the western market, but the good thing about Metroid being popular in Japan in the long run is that it would result in more attention being given to the franchise by Nintendo, and therefore more games would be created (hopefully). So the question is, is it a good thing for a Western Metroid fan if more games get made at the cost of changes made to appeal to the Japanese market, or are we better off with fewer Metroid games but these games are truer to the classic Metroids?

Even though Nintendo is most concerned with Japan, I don't think they would care how well a game does in Japan if it it's foreign sales make the game profitable. They were perfectly fine with how the previous games did, and I think they would still have the console games done by Retro if Retro wanted to do them (Retro was just getting the urge to do something new). I also don't think they would suddenly care about the Metroid series success in Japan after 20+ years. Since pissing off them majority of Metroid fans would not likely have much impact on sales in Japan, I think the smart thing would be to stick to western style Metroid games.

Personally, I was perfectly fine with the flow of Metroid games we have had.  If anything, we have way too many of them now.  I really don't give a damn if Metroid becomes popular in Japan, and I  like Nintendo having one franchise that's dramatically more popular in the West.  It makes them actually pay attention to our interests for a change rather than seeing the US as a completely secondary market.  Besides, I have a great deal of disgust for modern Japanese culture (Dragon Quest, the devaluation of women, the sexualization of extremely underaged girls, etc.), so I don't want the soul of Metroid to be sacrificed to appeal to that culture.

I hope you don't confuse the average Japanese person and the small audience of otaku that are the sole financial fuel for moe entertainment and merchandise. Despite how it looks like on the internet, the creepy 2D girls that look like they should only appeal to a small section of equally creepy and secluded nerds really do only appeal to a small section of creepy and secluded nerds. I didn't even know that made a sequel, almost no hype compared to the first game.

But yes, I just checked and saw that the Xbox 360 version got released a week before the PlayStation 3 version. Th 360 version was released on September 3, the PS3 version on September 10.

Well, they probably lost a lot of fans by including all that minigame crap (takeoff/landing, air refuel, special bomb camera, etc) that takes away from the pure missile-to-face goodness of the first game.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is still number one in Italy, and that looks like its the only place in Europe where that is still the case. Of course, Mario is an Italian character, so that may have something to do with that.

But then again, isn't the Mafia II game about Italians as well? Maybe Italians were offended by the stereotypes and violence and such.

Well, as historically expected, Metroid Other M really dropped off after the first week.  I guess even with the game specifically tailored to them, the Japanese still won't latch onto Metroid.  :-\

Well, maybe that's for the best; it might mean Nintendo will give up on trying to win over the Japanese and make Metroid games for the Western audiences that actually buy them, at least for a while.

...or judging by the continual sales of Wii Party, they might feel tempted to pull the series into that territory.  Hopefully, they'll refocus their efforts on the Western market with Metroid, but you never know.
