9. SUPER MARIO 64 DS NINTENDO OF AMERICA
Wow... that game has some legs!
No kidding! 14 years later and it is still selling!

Actually it's the DS version, which is still impressive at 4 and a half years.

Yeah, it was actually a launch title for the DS back when it came out way back in November 2004, so its the same exact age as the DS system itself. For a game THAT OLD to be in the top 10 lists now is absolutely amazing... I assumed Nintendo had long ceased manufacturing it.

It's similar enough to call it the same game.

Yes and No. It is largely the same game, but the fact its now in portable form and with the addition of all the mini games and whatever else Nintendo tacked on it is distinct enough to stand on its own. I've owned both 64 and 64 DS and I can see the differences. To be honest, I strongly do prefer the original though, because the DS controls for it are useless.

Not to mention the DS game has new missions, new characters, re-worked levels, etc. They are different enough to be considered different games. The DS version would have been great (instead of just good) if it had better controls. The d-pad does not control as good as an analog stick and the touchscreen control was worse IMO.

Yeah, that's true. In the DS version you can play as Yoshi, Luigi, Wario (probably one or two others) and each of these have different capabilities. In the original you could only play as Mario, and that was it.

But again, I didn't really enjoy it as well as I would have if it had a control stick. Oh well... here's hoping one day the DS version finds its way onto the Wii with nunchuck controls.  ;D

I do too. This game needs an analogue stick, considering it was the poster child for it back in the day. Plus the original just looks so much more clean than the DS version.

Just one other character, Mario.

Yeah, Mario64 makes a better poster child for the analog stick (which is unfortunately absent from the DS) than it does for the touchscreen. Interestingly, it was the launch title for both of those new ways of doing things, but it was very ill suited for the later...

If I'm not mistaken the DS's architecture is very similar to that of the N64 and that probably made it easy to port this game over. The DS is sorta like a portable N64, but without the analog stick.

That is a total crap argument. Under that idea any sequel is just the same game as the original. Super Mario 64 would not have existed without Donkey Kong (birth of Mario). Let's compare this to movies. Do you consider the 1968 and 2001 versions of Planet of the Apes to be the same movie but just with different packaging? Or Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? This is not like the Classic NES series where they were straight ports of the NES originals (with the only change being the aspect ratio). A re-make is different from a port in that a re-make is considered a new title while a port is not, SM64DS was a re-make and thus a new title.

Anyways, a little over 4 years of continues sales is great for the game. Us hardcore gamers may complain about the lack of price drops for most Nintendo first party games, but this is the reason why. The game is still selling tons of copies at $35, Nintendo has no reason to drop its price. New DS owners tend to want certain games, which is why Mario Kart DS managed to be one of the 10 best selling games of 2008 despite releasing back in 2005.

Super Mario 64 DS is $30, though I don't know if it has always been that price.

Do you consider the 1968 and 2001 versions of Planet of the Apes to be the same movie but just with different packaging?
Yes.

Or Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory?
The latter wasn't a remake of the first movie, it was just another movie based on the book.

A remake is not a new title, it is its own category: a remake. It contains a lot more old content than new content so it can't pass as a new game, and rarely is the new content actually worth buying the game for if one owns the original. Super Mario 64 DS is no exception. It's still enough of the same game that you can tie its success to the original game, and can make statements like "It has been going strong for 14 years!"

Analog sticks are overrated for games like Mario, the only problem with SM64DS was that you had to hold down the run button to move at full speed which you'd do about 98% of the time with an a-stick. Well, that and I think Mario would keep moving forward while turning when he had any inertia left and you tried to turn, often making him run off the platform you just landed on. Also the touchscreen-only camera controls were fail.

You could go into the menus and switch it so you ran by default and holding the button made you walk.
