Yeah they are hard to pull off against the better AI and against human players so they are fairly well balanced.

You're still not taking speed into account.

Hammer Bros are slowwww!!!!!!

That's their weakness and so you have to exploit that.

To defend against them you need to keep a bit of distance so their deke doesn't get you.  Then time your tackle right to take 'em out or use a Power-Up to take 'em out.

Yeah I took the straps off my wiimotes.  I don't think anyone has thrown one.  I'm more worried about players clubbing my furniture or each other.

There's a Nerf shell coming for the wiimotes in October.  They look pretty sweet.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Wii controls vs. Traditional controls
« on: August 03, 2007, 03:31:51 PM »
The controls aren't perfect, but I like 'em better.  The system has the Classic Controller also so, contrary to some thinking, Nintendo didn't abandon that type of control.  IT will be in SSBB right?

But for aiming the wiimote easily wins.  There's a mechanic the other controllers can't copy.  Fast twitch aiming.

The motion control also made all the WiiSports game unique and fresh and more entertaining.  Again unique.

I think for Mario Strikers, which is more traditional type of game, it wins too.  I like holding my hands apart for one thing.  That's big right there.  It's just more comfy.  Second the subtle Wii-specifc controls add a nice flavor to the game.  The jerking of the wiimote to tackle adds a visceral feeling to the game.  Pointing to block MegaSTrike shots is quickly understandable yet fast paced and challenging.  Jerking the nunchuk to distract the other guy doing a MegaSTrike or to switch PowerUps lets you perform these moves without taking your hands off the controls.

I did miss camera control in ZElda:TP.  But I got used to it.  I mean camera control is often a minus as much as a plus anyway.

How can you have sidekicks charaters have both powerful defense and offense moves.  While at the same time other charaters have not-so-powerful defense, and not-so-powerful offense moves

If the charater had a powerful shot (birdo) that was guarenteed to blow past the goalie, it's not fair at the same time for that charater to have a defensive move that knocks the other player out instead of a less powerful move that just dodges them

You mean like Toad?  He's awesome.  He's Super Quick and you can use his Deke to jump over the goalie and score!!!

In other words I think you're forgetting about speed.   So far it seems like the faster guys are the ones with not quite as powerful moves, but their speed makes up for that.

That's so true.  They should have renamed it Mario Pucksters for the US market and put in hockey sticks and skates.

I like the game alot though.

I too my straps off.  They just get in the way.  Plus who wants to have these remotes sit on your coffee table with straps attached to them.  Looks much better without.  I think those nerf wiimote shells look sweet.  They are coming on Oct.

Miyamoto was spotted checking out games from the competition at the last E3 too.

Nintendo Gaming / Nitro Bikes - Wii Exclusive
« on: July 12, 2007, 10:57:05 AM »
I didn't see any info on this game.  Made by folks who did Excite Truck 64.  Ubi is the publisher.

New Wii exclusive title: Nitro Bikes. They're showing a gameplay
trailer. The music is all xylophone and then... metal and crazy
destruction etc. Looks a lot like Excite Truck with jet-powered dirt
bikes. Controls with the same sideways Wiimote position as Excite
Truck, too. Available holiday '07. Online play up to six players.

35
It has great potential especially if you think Mario Sports, but if you think Sega as of late then you wake up.

Sweet, but still not complete.  No online tourney modes afaik.    Not a big fan, but the ability to setup an 8 man tourney with people is a fairly casual type thing.  Still, I suppose it at least has online play.   And EA is good at saving something for the next edition.  (See the 360 version the last 2 years.)

Oh and afaik there was never any standard in place that said 3rd parties must use friend's codes and what not.  IT's always been an open online system where developers/publishers did their own thing.

It would be nice if all these systems were compatible with one another tho so you can have one login.

I know I'll like this game, but $50?  It should be $30.

So I'm in dilemma.  It is $40 at CircuitCity.  So it's tempting.

Exactly.  Smashes will almost surely use motion control.

I expect the Wiimote/Nunchuk to incorporate some motion control also.   Maybe as an option or part of the sp game or some mini-games.  IT would be a shame for this game not to try and incorporate some single-handed fighting moves.  But every game doesn't have to use motion I suppose and motion would be best for a game made for it.  Not tacked on to a game made for a regular controller.

Personally the wiimote/nunchuk have made the gamepad feel ancient.

Obviously the wiimote control scheme will incorporate motion control into SSBB.

I wasn't expecting that either.   The DS is a $130 unit and you're not getting most of your sound from another source which is the case here.

I might be more understanding.  There's alot of tradeoffs here.  Costs of the speaker and soundchip.  I'm not sure if there's bandwidth or memory limitations.  Do they store the sounds in the controller memory for faster access?  If so that's another limitation.

I think I'm the only one that doesn't complain about the speaker on the wiimote.  I like it.  I like it in Wii Tennis.  I like it in Zelda.  I like it in most games.  Maybe my ears are shot, but eh it's good enough.   I wasn't expecting living room sound from a tiny little speaker either.

Anyway ordered this already from somewhere on 'net for $25 shipped.  Can't wait.  I never quite finished it on the GC and I really am starting to enjoy the Wii controls overall.  I like the aiming.  I like some of the motion control.  I like how comfy it is to be able to hold your hand apart from one another like you naturally do anyway.

TalkBack / RE: Mario Party 8 Released for Wii
« on: May 30, 2007, 05:24:40 PM »
I got it.  I like it so does my son.  Nowhere near as bad as IGN says.  I think the cpu moves alot faster than MP 4/5 which are the last ones I played.  The graphics seems about the same maybe better in spots.  The menus are kinda plain, but easy to use.    I Like using the pointer to navigate menus and play.  The mini-games are similar in spirit to the mini-games of the other MP games.

Anyway this is more of a family board game.  SP is appealing to kids.  MP also can be appealing to teens/early 20's too if you're drinking or are into playing party videogames.

Actually I think Mario Party will be bigger than SPM.

I also think Big Brain Academy could do quite well.  I'm picking that one up.  The mp stuff looked like fun and if they price it right and market it then it could do quite well.

I think Brain Age and BBA could do better if more casual type gamers knew about 'em.  And had a chance to play them.  The other part is I don't think non-nerds are comfortable going into videogame sections of stores let alone a Gamestop.  They need another outlet in which to buy and try these games.

Nintendo should probably do like Apple does and open some of their own stores.  I guess you'd get alot of nerds there though so maybe that wouldn't work.  But I think they need to get the word out better to casual gamer types.

I played it with a Classic controller.  It didn't notice any problems with the joystick.    I do wish they would let you save. Even saving your state when you exit would have been fine.  It doesn't seem like that happens in N64 games though.

Well I'm getting it.  But I like Big Brain Academy on the DS too.

I like the Mii stuff and mp in the Wii version.  I played a little mp DS-DS and that was alright, but the mp looks  more exciting on the Wii.

The 45 probably includes 2nd party projects.  PLus many of those games could be 2 years out or more even so it's not unbelievable especially since we have no previous numbers to compare it to.

They are making stuff like Brain Academy for the Wii too which have much smaller budgets and development times.  Hopefully a smaller list price too.

I'm likeing Super Paper Mario a lot better because it's not about taking turns hitting each other.  Your skill is not determained by the roll of a dice.

Make Pokemon more like that and i'll give it a try again.

That is one reason why Mario and Luigi is such a unique series, it has RPG style battles, but your damage is all dependent on your skill. If you get good enough you can almost avoid any damage.

Err... nobody too familiar with the battle system on Thousand Year Door, then? I was blocking those attacks like crazy. Its a great system where your skill and timing is a part, deciding how powerful your attack is and if you block or even deflect your opponent's attack.

Exactly.  PAPerMario:TTYD had plenty of skill in the battle system.  IN some battles you needed to get that extra damage by hitting the button at the right time or you were a goner.
