As for special hardware?  R4 flash carts are just as easy to get as ordering anything else online and you don't have to mod the DS for it to work.  There's plenty of sites that sell/help/even install the freaking things for you.

I don't disagree - Flash carts for the DS are easy to come by - but it doesn't change the fact that it's still special hardware.  It's not something you can hook up to a PC and do out of the box and it's not something you can go to the local mega retailer and pick up.

*cough* Action Replay *cough*  Just buy the one was the mSD slot (think there's two versions).  Not as easy as R4 but if you want an retailer option there it is.

You can use a DS Action Replay to play booleg ROMs?

I'm not sure what I feel regarding the Wii's sales figures. On the one hand, it sold a somewhat respectable amount for its fifth year, and it's LTD is nothing to sneeze at.

On the other hand, the PS3 hasn't seen any drop YoY, so the market's clearly still somewhat alive, and the Wii came out of the gate so strongly I can't help but be somewhat saddened at how badly the ball got dropped.

Oh, and obligatory "Vita is d00med" post.

I don't think the Wii necessarily dropped the ball all that bad in Japan. The PS2 is at, what, 22 mil LTD there? The console market has contracted there, and in its place the DS emerged as the new PS2, not the Wii. One of the themes of this generation is Nintendo struggling to swim upstream against a shrinking Japan console market, so I still commend the Wii's performance, even if it's a shame it simply doesn't look like it can hit the 20 mil mark.

And the relatively strong sustained performance of the PS3, in Japan and other markets, is more about a possible validation of Sony's future-proofing strategy, the so-called 10-year lifespan.

The Wii, on the otherhand, is past year 5, pretty old for a Nintendo console. The lack of software support, a contributing factor, is not a surprise when recalling the N64 and GameCube consoles: third parties just aren't there to sustain the platform in its last years when Nintendo starts pulling a lot of its internal resources to create much-needed software for their new platforms.

Where is Skyward Sword? Last month it only came in at like number 7 or 9 if I recall correctly, but I was told that was fine because it released near the very end of November. Well, its been out for the whole entire month of December, so where is it?

Skyward Sword is said to be the number 10 best selling game on the individual charts.  Star Wars: The Old Republic was said to have sold over 600,000, and that is suppose to be number 14 on the charts.  This means we know at the very least Skyward Sword did somewhere over 600k for December.  Hell for all we know it could have done around 1 million in December considering how big December sales can be.

You forgot the Kirby games and Skyward Sword.

Kirby Mass Attack - 1.01 million

Kirby's Return to Dreamland - 1.21 million

Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword - 3.42 million

So yeah, Kirby remains to be a very steady series for Nintendo and Skyward Sword is doing good as well.

The damndest part is that I would have guessed that these two series would have their sales reversed, i.e. Kart sells more on the handheld while the platformer does better on the console. Shows what I know!

So, to continue an earlier conversation - Tie-in ratios!

DS: 5.9:1
Wii: 8.5:1
3DS: 2.5:1

Looks like the previous number quoted for the DS was pretty spot-on.  Really, I'm surprised it's that low (although once it was pointed out that households have multiple DS units, I can see how it's lower than I thought...)

3DS seems about right... although I have a few more than that personally, I figure there's quite a few folks out there who have one 3DS title (OoT, MK7, SM3DL) and haven't picked anything else up yet.  Hell, there's probably more than a few folks who got an Ambassador unit but haven't bought a single game yet.

I'm curious how that Wii tie-in ratio compares to 360/PS3.  I assume it's low?

Not sure about worldwide, but in the US the Xbox 360 is 9.1-1 and PlayStation 3 is 8.3-1, Wii is 7.7-1 in the US (http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/39708/The_2011_US_retail_software_sales_breakdown.php)
Though that article says they don't include bundled games, while I think Nintendo does.

I have a 3DS but no 3DS games yet, and it isn't because of the Ambassador games (bought it before that was announced). However, what skews with that a bit is that I didn't have a DS, so I've been buying DS games, which aren't counted in its tie-in ratio, to play on it. I can't justify $40 on a 3DS game when DS games are so much cheaper, plus right now the only game that might actually be worth $40 is Super Mario 3D Land. I wonder if I'm the only one who's like this...

Yikes, that 3DS tie-in ratio is pretty shocking. I bet Nintendo is really praying that number comes up to something more robust as they pour more effort in energizing that system.

Mop, why didn't you ever have a DS?
I had a Lite before, but sold it for a bunch of Wii games. I prefer console experiences to handheld ones, they're just plain better in nearly every way. But then Nintendo had to go and announced a should-be console game on 3DS, Luigi's Mansion 2, and now I have no choice but to have a handheld. In the meantime, since DS games are cheaper now, I'm stocking up on its unique games that aren't available on consoles, plus it has a better selection than it did back in 2008 when I got one. I've also been getting into RPGs lately and there are a lot more of those on DS than Wii.
