The first two weeks of sales of the 3ds was around 570k, vita's at 400k.  One major release can change that but right now the 3ds has the triple attack going (MH3, MK7, and SML3d) and the Vita really doesn't have that "Japanese" AAA title yet (Uncharted is great but the Japanese were never big fans of the series).

When Iwata took away Monster Hunter, he basically cut off the Vita's legs before it even had a chance to walk.  Now Sony is left with an overpriced handheld that has no killer apps to create demand.  Even if Sony bites the bullet and lowers the price, they still don't have any major titles since they lost Monster Hunter, the only series that was keeping the PSP alive in Japan.

And since they didn't launch in the West this holiday, they've basically given Nintendo all the momentum going into 2012.  In other words, the Vita is screwed in every territory unless Sony lowers the price and somehow gets exclusives that can rival what Nintendo has, which ain't going to happen anytime soon.

The PSP had a slow start in 2005 when it launched. I'm not sure when the PSP got the Monster Hunter games, but it wasn't until years later. Maybe the Vita don't have that game this time around, but Monster Hunter came out of thin air, so there's really no reason for Sony not to hope something else might pop out of thin air and become the next big thing in Japan (or elsewhere).

Japan certainly seems like the kind of country where these fad things come and go. Just look at the "meh" response they gave to that brand new Final Fantasy game. A decade or so ago that game would have been a blockbuster. Right now Monster Hunter seems to be the big thing over there, but tomorrow, who knows? Whatever the next big thing ends up being its possible it could be a Vita exclusive. No one can predict the future.

I've been wanting to get a Vita just to play the occasional Japanese title (since if it follows the PSP's trend, all the JRPGs will be made for the handhelds) and my existing PSP library.  Right now, though, I just don't see why you would buy that device, even taking into account an Uncharted title at launch.  The cost of the device is fine given its technical specs, but the associated costs are just ridiculous.  If the Vita continues to underperform as it has in Japan, I'll look forward to picking up the NA version a year from now for $100 off.

As for Monster Hunter, that may be a big deal in Japan but very few people will give a damn about it outside Japan.  Hell, give trend-obsessed Japan a few years, and even they may not care about Monster Hunter anymore (or it will transform into a mobile phone series instead).  We'll see how the Vita does when it releases in NA.

We'll see how the Vita does when it releases in NA.

When you combine the $250 price point with the fact it is launching post holiday season in a pretty dead time of year, I think you have a recipe for a lackluster performance.

Sony probably should have given NA top priority and delayed the launch in Japan so they could have gotten in on the holiday season in a region where the holidays are actually observed. Oh well, that's their problem isn't it? I can't say I feel sorry for them at all in light of their behavior these last few years.

The Vita will be in the same position the 3DS was in, except Sony doesn't realistically have the ability to cut the price of the hardware significantly and I don't think it has as strong a lineup slated for the back half of 2012 as the 3DS had this year.

It doesn't help that consumers know and expect the price to drop on it eventually. Maybe there are a lot of consumers thinking and hoping it will see a price slashing on the same level as that of the 3DS? That 3DS price drop so soon after launch was unprecedented, but it is recent and still in the minds of a lot of people. And if the Vita has poor sales it just might happen again. Sony would then be selling it at a loss, but Sony has often sold their hardware at a loss so there would be nothing new there.

People are expecting the Vita's price to be cut so soon? I thought it was a shock at E3 2011 that Sony is offering the Vita at US$250 given the system's specifications and capabilities.

And to top it all off we all know the Vita is going to be cracked and hacked sooner or later, if it hasn't already. Sony can put in all the anti-piracy measures they want, but the harder they fight it the more determined the hackers become. The more challenging it is the more they want to do it for the prestige value of pulling it off. They may do that for noble intentions like just installing Linux or whatever, but then the vultures (pirates) will swoop in and pick the meat off the Vita's rotting corpse. That's exactly what happened with the PSP.

The Vita IS an absolutely impressive piece of tech for the price. But there's a lot of competition for people's gaming/gadget dollars nowadays, and the Vita will have to prove not only the value of the components in the box, but also the desirability of the experiences it can provide.

Seeing this going on for Sony, I'm really impressed with the strategic value of Nintendo's conservative tech strategy (which gave them room to maneuver on price) and the value of their first party software in being able to save the first holiday season for the 3DS.

3DS Crosses 4 Million in the U.S. - 1.5 Million+ sold in Dec 2011
2 3DS titles sell 1 million units & Zelda: SS is 45th Wii Million Seller

Quote from: Nintendo PR
Nintendo 3DS Crosses 4 Million Mark
Driven by Fast-Selling Software Nintendo 3DS Sells More in Its First Nine Months Than Wii Did

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Whether they were on the go or at home, whether they played in 2D on the TV or in glasses-free 3D in their hands, gamers of all ages celebrated the holidays with Mario™ and Zelda™. Super Mario 3D Land™ and Mario Kart™ 7 for the Nintendo 3DS™ system not only became the fastest-selling titles in the history of their respective franchises when they launched, but they are now also the first Nintendo 3DS titles to sell 1 million units each in the United States. On the console side, The Legend of Zelda™: Skyward Sword, which also broke launch records, became the 45th Wii™ title to sell more than 1 million units in the United States.

“One of the strongest software lineups in our history helped Nintendo have a great holiday season and to close 2011 with a full head of steam”
.“One of the strongest software lineups in our history helped Nintendo have a great holiday season and to close 2011 with a full head of steam,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Not only have the new Mario and Zelda titles already broken records, but with strong reviews and satisfied customers sharing their positive experiences, all three are also shaping up to be the latest long-tail titles from Nintendo. Couple that with a massive first- and third party lineup in the first part of the year and the prospects for 2012 are extremely promising.”

Nintendo sold more than 12 million total hardware units in the United States in 2011, marking the fifth year in a row that the company has accomplished that feat. This includes more than 4.5 million units of Wii, more than 4 million Nintendo 3DS systems, and more than 3.4 million units of the Nintendo DS™ family of systems. This brings the installed base for Wii and Nintendo DS to 39 million and more than 51 million, respectively.

With a strong lineup of software on the horizon, including new installments in the Mario Party™, Pokémon™ and Kid Icarus™ franchises, as well as third-party games such as Resident Evil® Revelations from Capcom and METAL GEAR SOLID® 3D Snake Eater from Konami for Nintendo 3DS, that momentum should continue into the first quarter of 2012 and beyond.

In addition to the milestones reached by new software, two evergreen Nintendo titles celebrated milestones as 2011 drew to a close. Mario Kart Wii™ passed 11 million units sold and New Super Mario Bros.™ for the Nintendo DS family crossed 10 million total units sold.
Remember that Wii and Nintendo 3DS feature parental controls that let adults manage the content their children can access. For more information about this and other features, visit http://www.nintendo.com/wii or http://www.nintendo.com/3ds.

It pretty much has to be because Nintendo didn't have the ability to supply enough Wiis early on. If they'd had the ability to meet demand for the Wii from the start I doubt anything would ever touch that record. Not trying to take away from the 3DS; it's really picked up and had a great finish to the year, but comparing straight numbers for the two system is ignoring a major variable.

I'm pretty sure Nintendo is NOT taking a loss on the hardware and never has.

I think the working was something like they are losing profits on every 3DS sold due to the price drop. Where they were once making an $80 profit they are now not making an $80 profit, therefore loss of profits. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure most people just read the comment wrong.
