Mario games used to be spaced out further apart. When you churn them out at this fast of a rate its inevitable that the incredibly high quality is going to come down at least a little bit. At least so far we haven't seen anything as bad as Mario in Time or Mario is Missing like 20 years ago, but if Nintendo keeps milking the franchise maybe that won't be too far off.

That may be some of it, but I don't think it's that much. I think it has more to do with the fact that the development studio that did the three recent 3D Marios may be the best in the industry, and it's not really fair to compare lesser studios' output to theirs. NSMBWii is a lot better than NSMB DS, and it would look even better if you weren't comparing it to EAD Tokyo.

Not completely true: remember that between the original and World we also had five titles.

It's a pretty incredible month for game sales when 700,000 copies sold (Uncharted 3) only nets you 7th place on the Top 10.

Perhaps, but it is pretty uncommon for a Nintendo-developed title to be nowhere near the top of that November NPD list.

And I have mixed feelings about seeing Skyrim there at #2.  On the one hand, it's good to see an RPG that high up, especially one with typically niche appeal.  On the other hand, the PS3 version I have of that game is an unplayable mess, and I don't like seeing Bethesda rewarded for mediocre workmanship.

I think Zelda (and Uncharted) might be higher on that list if they did it like they used to and separated the SKUs. Those are the only two games on the list that are platform exclusive.

Zelda is doing fine.  Nintendo games always get better sales in December as well so Skyward Sword is guaranteed to sell over 1 million copies in that month as well.  In comparison Donkey Kong Country Returns last year sold over 400k in November then sold somewhere between 1.3-1.5 million copies in December.

Since the Zelda series is more popular than Donkey Kong, Skyward Sword should be able to sell over 2 million copies by the end of the year in America.

What I find most depressing is that Nintendo's single system SKU was beaten by two slots by Sony's single system SKU (Uncharted 3). Getting beat by multiple system titles combined is one thing, but when Nintendo's core A+ title gets its ass handed to it by a Sony exclusive, that's pretty alarming.

Given how Rayman: Origins only sold 50,000 and the rumor that BG&E2 won't happen if Origins doesn't sell well, I guess we shouldn't be expecting Beyond Good & Evil 2 any time soon or ever.

As someone who owns nearly half the retail games currently available for the system (I just checked that, and am somewhat horrified that I'm only a few short of that mark), let me assure you that there were definitely other good games for the system prior to Mario. Nothing that could be considered system sellers, but there were more than a few games worth buying if you owned the hardware.

The monster hunt is still on! The true test is how it will do over the next few months, but 471k is quite the debut for a game on a system's first year.

EDIT: Yay! SalesBot.

Of note, MH3G pulling a 3DS title up. Winter sales have some Wii games (Kirby, PokePark 2) moving up.

The 3DS sold a little more than 1/2 million mark last week in the states as well.  MK7 led the way breaking 3/4 million mark and another 300K SML3D sold.  Overall things are looking up for nintendo during the holidays.
