340K isn't that bad considering the userbase number--i'm expecting it to hit at least a million in Japan by years end.

I'm curious to hear if anyone has the Week One numbers for New Super Mario Bros., for comparison's sake.

VGChartz has that game's first week in Japan pegged at 910,297 and the second week at 336,052.

The actual numbers are 899,518 first week and 334,208 second week. So VGChartz was close with their guesses (that's all they do, they are not reliable).

That would depend on which source your numbers are coming from.

Famitsu, Media Create or Densetsu(? I forget what the 3rd one was called)

they all tend to vary. But I would hope that at the very least, VGCz can get the publicly shared information correct though.

True, the Japanese numbers can vary slightly based on which source. I would avoid using VGChartz in general though.

For the record, the numbers I posted are from Media Create.

Oh my god. I can't believe you guys are making me defend VGChartz number even in the most round about way. But they might be using Famitsu or Densetsu. That is why their number wouldn't match up with the MC number TJ posted.

Actually, knowing VGChartz, they probably took all 3, averaged it out and then added 27 to the total just to call it their own.

Heheh, sorry. VGChartz's numbers in this regard is close enough that I don't care too much if they are exact. From watching a Pach-Attack, VGChartz is said to not be too far off with its numbers. That sounds good enough for me when I play at armchair sales analyst.

He was talking about the NPD in that Pach-Attack, not VGChartz.  He was saying that NPD's numbers every month aren't always exact figures because it takes time to get those numbers, so NPD estimates based on the (more accurate than VGChartz) information they have.  And from his experience, NPD was usually extremely accurate in their estimations, only off by at most a few percentage points.

I don't agree with NPD hoarding the sales numbers they have when similar industries don't do that, but I do trust their sources since their business depends on being accurate.  VGChartz has no financial imperative to be accurate and they don't list their sources, so I don't trust their numbers.

I think NPD bases their numbers on something like 85% of all companies that sell games. That is more accurate than something like TV ratings (which are based on just a few thousand homes).

Yeah, if I remember right, the data that Pachter said the NPD had to estimate was sales data from Walmart since Walmart doesn't share that with them.  Apparently, some of the few times the NPD has been way off-base are when they inaccurately estimated Walmart sales.

I distinctly remember Pachter talking about the numbers VGChartz reports as the NPD stopped reporting numbers in it's public report.

3DS On-track to outsell DS
« Reply #7488 on: November 11, 2011, 05:40:40 PM »
Quote from: Nintendo PR
In its eighth month on the market, the Nintendo 3DSâ„¢ system crossed 1.65 million units sold in the U.S., according to the NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States. This milestone puts the platform on track to surpass the first-year total of Nintendo DSâ„¢, the best-selling game platform in U.S. history.

The Nintendo DS system sold 2.37 million units in its first 12 months (November 2004-October 2005), with approximately 50 percent of those sales occurring in the holiday time frame. With its first holiday season and the launches of the Super Mario 3D Landâ„¢ and Mario Kartâ„¢ 7 games on the horizon, Nintendo 3DS is poised to eclipse that number and establish a new benchmark for hand-held gaming launches in the United States.

“With a massive lineup of software on the way and the first-year sales record of Nintendo DS in its sights, Nintendo 3DS enters its first holiday season with a full head of steam,†said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing.

Other Nintendo news from the month includes:

Nintendo sold more than 675,000 combined hardware units in October. This includes more than 250,000 units of Nintendo 3DS, nearly 250,000 Wiiâ„¢ systems and nearly 180,000 units of the Nintendo DS family of systems.

For the year, Nintendo has sold a combined 7 million hardware units and more than 55 million units of software have been sold for Nintendo platforms. Both of these numbers should increase with the Nov. 20 launch of The Legend of Zeldaâ„¢: Skyward Sword for Wii.
Both Wii, up 8 percent year over year, and Nintendo DS, up 23 percent over the previous month, demonstrated strong momentum heading into their respective sixth and eighth holiday seasons. In total, the two platforms have sold more than 87 million combined hardware units and more than 540 million combined units of software in the United States.

Well the 2004-2005 period in gaming history was a lot different than it is now. I would think it was also a lot smaller, so naturally the 3DS should sell more because there are a lot more gamers now period.

I don't think the difference in industry size is significant enough to account for this. Sure, there are more gamers now, but I'd think that's at least canceled out by all the competition from mobile phones that wasn't there in 2005.

People think the 3DS lineup so far is ****, but it's way, way better than the first eight months of the DS. The DS didn't do that well out of the gate, deservedly so, and only picked up once games started to come out (sound familiar?) which wasn't really until later in its life than we currently are in the 3DS's.

I remember it wasn't until the summer of 2005 that the DS started to gain momentum. That was when Nintendogs came out, which was the first killer app of the system. I don't really remember all there was before then, but I know the launch lineup was pretty disappointing. The "big hit" launch title of the DS was Super Mario 64DS which is an awesome game of course, but it was a remake and the controls were absolutely horrible.

The first year library of the 3DS is a lot better than the first year of the DS. Remember, that not only includes Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart, but RE: Revelations in February. It's no shock that the 3DS is on pace to outsell the first year of the DS, because the DS didn't really take off until later. It really struggled at first, so if the 3DS hadn't done better it would be a pretty bad sign.

So do you think Nintendo cut the price of the 3DS too soon? Maybe sales would have picked up when the games like Super Mario Land 3D showed up. Of course, they would have been ripping off consumers with the $80 markup, but just maybe they would have been able to get away with it.

Probably not since sales picked up a good bit after the price drop. They might've been more steady if the system would've launched closer to $200.

Also, let the mark up think go.

Judging by the cannibalization of the DS' sales, I think that the number of people buying a 3DS this month (let alone the past few months) would have been dramatically lower sans price cut.
