By loss, do they mean Nintendo made a negative profit or didn't make as much money as last year/half? I wish I remembered more of my economics class.

Negative profits. If they just made less profits, it'd read more like "profits of X, down Y% YoY" or some such.

Ah, thanks. I sometimes am confused with all this financial stuff so I wanted to make sure what the news meant.

Anyway, Siliconera has a table of the top 20 selling games of US and Europe between January and September of 2011.

Square Enix pulling in sales for themselves. From what little I've read about FF Type-0, it's getting an okay reception. Kirby's Return to Dreamland looks like it is having a nice debut at 136k. I hope it sticks around for a while.

We're now well on our way to the holiday season and, as expected, the Nintendo holiday spike is starting to take effect. The 3DS sells more than double everything else combined this week, while Super Mario 3D Land mops up the software chart. I'll be fascinated to see how it does over the long-term in Japan, known for being a less receptive nation when it comes to 3D Mario, as we've seen with the Galaxy titles. 3D Land is a little different, being on a handheld and also the most 2D of the 3D Mario games, in a manner of speaking.

I'm sort of surprised about Super Mario Land and NSMB* beating SMB3.  Darn Hooligans messing up my Mario order.  I do think its sad that SM64DS outsold SMG.

I think New Super Mario Brothers released to a larger userbase, though, since it was released about a year and a half into the DS lifespan and we're only eight months into the 3DS.

My lack of faith in that site's numbers is one of the many reasons I don't go there anymore, but they'd have to be waaay off for that not to be an interesting data point. Thank you.

It actually wasn't a holiday, it was in May. But it was the first new 2D Mario game in 15 years, so of course it was huge. Super Mario 3D Land doesn't have such a distinction, and I actually wonder if the 2D-3D mix is a little confusing to people.

VGChartz has that game's first week in Japan pegged at 910,297 and the second week at 336,052.
My lack of faith in that site's numbers is one of the many reasons I don't go there anymore, but they'd have to be waaay off for that not to be an interesting data point. Thank you.

Agreed. Japan's Media Create sales data is more freely available than the NPD so I don't see any reason VGChatz's Japan sales data to be grossly inaccurate.

Dumb question, I'm sure, but what, exactly, is FMSMB?

Famicom Mini SMB. I like how the sprite is squashed like in that version.

Ah.  Does that include both the NES Classics version and the Japanese release then?

No, the chart only covers Japanese sales.
