Goldeneye Rouge Agent? I thought it flopped.

I remember some people having high hopes for the DS version and turned out pretty bad.

Was Goldeneye the most popular Bond movie or are they simply trying to capitalize on people's nostalgia for the Goldeneye Nintendo 64 game?

I have no doubt that it's the latter. The movie has a 80% fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes and made $352 million worldwide, Activision knows that GoldenEye 007 is still one of the most popular FPS's and was the game that basically showed that the genre could be done well on consoles.

I've seen GoldenEye show up pretty high on rankings of the movies by Bond fans, but the only reason Activision would care about it is nostalgia for the game.

I think its just viral marketing.  Apparently people still check for Goldeneye websites and who registers them.  Why not simply register the game to build hype for a game that may or may not even be James Bond Related,

Goldeneye as a movie was horrid. The game, however, which came out TWO YEARS LATER grossed more then the movie.

By how much, that I do not know.

Well it was also $50 per game vs $6-8 per movie ticket.

So even if only 1/6 of the people that saw the movie bought the game, the game would still out gross the movie.

I liked the Goldeneye movie.  I consider that the best Pierce Brosnan James Bond film by far.  The game is better though.

Goldeneye has got to be one of the most unexpected videogame successes of all time.  The whole point of making a licenced game is that it comes out around the same time as the movie to capitalize on the film's success.  But the film came out in 1995 before the N64 was even released so even if Rare had it ready as a launch title it was going to be a year late no matter what.  And Goldeneye wasn't a big enough movie that two years later people would still be going nuts for it.

I never paid any attention to the game while it was in development.  It was a console FPS, which at the time always sucked and it was a licenced game.  And the two years late thing was like some sort of Duke Nukem Forever-esque joke.  It just begged to be ignored.  When it became a big hit I was like "really?  That vapourware Bond game is awesome?!"  But then I tried it and, holy ****, it was! :)

The reason the game was so successful though was that it was so great.  Not just "really good" but legitimately groundbreaking.  It succeeded DESPITE the fact that it was licenced game that came out two years too late.  EA didn't get that and Activision probably doesn't either.  They see the name and think James Bond and specifically the Goldeneye film as the catalyst for the game's success.

Though perhaps giving a talented dev a licenced property and giving them the time and freedom to make a great game, instead of just churning out some licenced junk to fool rubes and mothers for a week before everyone hears the game sucks, is the key to major success with a licenced game.  That attracts legitimate success, not just temporary con-man success like most licenced junk.

Normally what you're saying is true, but the thing is the James Bond franchise is immensely popular regardless of each individual movie in it. Someone could make a James Bond game that isn't based on any movie at all and odds are it would still do well just because of the James Bond name being attached to it.

Look at the Batman Arkham Asylum game that came out recently. Was there ever an Arkham Asylum movie? Not that I'm aware of, but the game still did well anyway because it was Batman. Another example would be Star Wars Shadows of the Empire which was another N64 game that fills in the events between empire strikes back and return of the Jedi. That wasn't a movie that was ever made, but it was Star Wars and that's really all it takes.

I'm not saying the game wasn't great or that being great didn't contribute to its success, though. I'm just saying that even if Goldeneye was a year or two old the James Bond name was still a big factor regardless.

Kinda Ironic the same director who directed new Bond Daniel Craig for Casino Royale is the same director who directed new Bond Pierce Brosnan for Goldeneye. Goldeneye has aged horribly, but its kinda aged in a charming way. The worse James Bond with Pierce Brosnan I saw was Die another Day, the villain looked too much like a friend of mine for me to take it seriously.

You took Bond movies seriously? Half of the fun for me is not taking them seriously since a lot of them are quite out there in plot and execution.

I find it funny that THAT is the reason you couldn't take Die Another Day seriously, instead of, say, the INVISIBLE CAR! Who comes up with an idea like that and doesn't get laughed at?  :Q

Though I wonder if I was in a situation where I was making a movie with a big production company and everything if I would have the confidence to tell some exec that his idea is stupid.

Keep in mind that the invisible car was just the next progression in a series of more-and-more ridiculous gadgets/autos.  From an outsider it appears completely silly, but the to the writer who needed a fresh idea, it wasn't that big a leap.  And it wasn't just the car, do you remember the villain's mech/armor/suit?  Kind of reminds you of certain game developers who add trains to a certain series... (please don't start a debate, this move obviously resulted in mixed-reactions)

As for the most popular bond movie, I'm pretty sure that title belongs to Casino Royale.  In terms of cultural significance, however, Goldfinger is still unmatched.  Among Bond fans Goldeneye is usually one of Brosnan's top two films, at least from what I've observed.

By Casino Royale do you mean the newest one or the original version (there was an original version, right?).

The Daniel Craig bonds are good action movies, but I miss the ones from the late 70's and early 80's. Those ones are classic.

Yes, it was made it 1967 and one of only two Bond movies not made be EON Productions (the other being 1983's Never Say Never Again, a spoof movie starring Sean Connery and basically a remake of Thunderball), which technically makes it an unofficial Bond movie. It starred David Niven as Bond. Apparently it got lukewarm reviews at the time (Roger Ebert called it "possibly the most indulgent film ever made"), but later reviews were more positive.

LOL, Casino Royale wasn't a remake. The old film was actually a spoof of the James Bond novel. I didn't realize that until I looked it up just now. I guess when I heard the phrase 'reboot' when the film was first being made caused me to assume it was a remake of an earlier film I had yet to see.

Is Casino Royale is the most popular entirely because it's newer?  I have a feeling that if you did a public poll one of the Daniel Craig films would win because of younger people having no knowledge of the earlier films.  I agree that Goldfinger is unmatched.  Hell, it's the BEST Bond film.  The Sean Connery films are the essential Bond.  And any Bond pop culture reference is almost always from the Connery era.  If you showed a 15 year old Goldfinger he would recognize stuff like Oddjob and the "no, Mr. Bond I expect you to die" scenes, despite having never seen the original clips.

Though my favourite Bond reference spoofs From Russia with Love.  "What are you going to do with these guys?"  "Oh nothing.  I've just always wanted to open a door to a room where people are being trained like in James Bond movies." :)

The Simpsons is full of pop culture references and spoofs.  As a kid I laughted at tons of gags that at the time I had no idea were references.  Later when watching the source material I would see the same scene and realize that The Simpsons were referencing it.  In Goldfinger's case the scene where Bond is strapped to a table with a laserbeam slowly moving towards him is so iconic that odds are most people who are unfamiliar with Goldfinger would, while watching the film, see the scene and think "ah, so THIS is where that's from."  They know the references, they just don't know they're from Goldfinger or possibly even James Bond.
