Completely Baseless Rumble Technology Speculation
« on: June 18, 2006, 08:34:51 PM »
Boy, I tell ya, shuffling off the yoke of journalistic integrity and fully rational thought is a great feeling.

Hey! Immersion is showing off new rumble tech! Read this!

Quote

In addition to allowing stronger, more detailed rumbling effects in video games, Immersion's new technology is lighter (it uses only one motor instead of two), smaller, and draws less power.

...

A heavy recoil effect when firing a rocket launcher, with the feedback trailing off as the rocket propelled into the distance

...

Immersion says that the new rumble technology is ready now, and the company is currently showing off its capabilites to interested parties.

So...think it might make it into the Wii or (god forbid) the PS360?

A glooming peace this morning with it brings;
The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head:
Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Sega and her Mashiro.

So it can magically appear in the innovative PS3 controller where Sony will claim it recently figured out how to implement rumble functions without interfering with the advanced nature of the motion sensing.

What does that even mean? Surely it doesn't come close to feeling like real recoil?

Regardless, this sounds pretty cool, and it'd be neat if it were integrated in the wiimote.

They are recoilless, but that isn't next-gen.

18 Days: Wiki disagrees. I assume they mean personell-mounted weapons rather than vehicle-mounted since a vehicle wouldn't experience the same kind of force. An RPG launcher does contain some of the propellant to increase the force on the projectile but I'm sure if they meant RPG they'd have said RPG. There are also recoilless guns (e.g. Panzerfaust) that are sometimes confused with rocket launchers.

Rumble that doesn't recreate the recoil of BARRY BURTON'S .44 MAGNUM doesn't impress anyone.

I thought the Panzerfaust and Bazooka both had a rocket stage after the initial propulsion out of the tube. Or are they simply explosive-launched versions of the PIAT?
