Nintendo Gaming / Re: Muramasa: The Demon Blade (Oboro Muramasa Youtouden)

Holy cow, this game just keeps looking better and better with each new trailer. I'm really looking forward to this.

Also, is it just me, or does it sound like the Marvelous announcer is saying "Mervous"?

Nuts.

Sure, split-screen cramps your visual field and lets the other players "cheat" by glancing at your screen to find your exact position. But like others have been saying, it's a lot more fun to play with friends in the same room. (My favorite FPS memories come from muiltiplayer GoldenEye and PD.) It's too bad that there will only be online, but it sounds like HVS has done all they can or are willing to do at this point. Plus, it's not like most people on these forums will have a hard time finding others to play with.

Sunshine isn't my favorite Mario game, but I enjoyed it. It looked good, cleaning things was oddly satisfying, and the special areas in particular were really fun. It was also great simply to have a new main-line Mario game to play. But, I wasn't wild about the last several blue coins and the somewhat lack of variety among the levels (though it makes sense that they were all set on the island setting). Bowser's appearance was a bit of a letdown ("Sweet, it's Bowser! But he's... talking and sitting in a hot tub and-- oh, fight's over already. Huh").

I actually liked the final boss battle, it was very different and unique. Not to mention it had GORGEOUS visuals. But I know I'm in the minority for liking it ;).

Yeah, that was one purdy fight. I enjoyed Corona Mountain, too (both its visuals and the level itself), but the whole final encounter seemed a little too "flash in the pan" for me to really enjoy. Oh well.

TalkBack / Re: Klonoa : Door to Phantomile Announced for Wii

This game is rad ass. Its enemy inflation mechanic makes it distinctive from other platformers. It also has very enjoyable music. I've got the PS One copy and I'm still planning on picking this version up - especially if it has some extra content (mirror mode, for one). I just hope Namco (or whatever team it has been passed onto) doesn't adjust the difficulty to make it easier. I remember it providing a decent challenge by the end, but Klonoa 2, while also enjoyable, was too easy. That, and that it still comes to the States despite its apparent floppage in Japan.

Thanks for the impressions. Definitely keep on HV about local multiplayer.

Also, Wii is much, much less creepy than that possessed talking bear doll from the 80's, so it's at least got that going for it...

Iwata also expressed disappointment that Nintendo failed to deliver a product or service last year that could get the Japanese market really excited. He divulged that both Animal Crossing and Wii Music were below expectations in that department despite strong momentum overseas. Iwata said that Nintendo was working hard to ensure that they rectify this situation and that they already have more ideas to prevent this happening in 2009.

I find it often refreshing when we get to hear what Iwata thinks about Nintendo and its games. I mean, anyone working high up in a company is going to try and spin things in their favor, but at least Iwata still sounds honest. He didn't say that he thought Wii Music or Animal Crossing were bad games (I'm not either), but he did openly acknowledge that they didn't instill much customer-wide excitement -- at least, not the big kind that other games have caused. He could've pointed to the games' successes so far and left it at that, but instead he's looking for ways to improve Nintendo's situation in the new year.

It's also nice to see that general Japanese and American tastes in gaming are still somewhat in sync, so to speak, as Wii Music and AC got mixed reactions over here, too.

Podcast Discussion / Re: Radio Trivia: Podcast Edition - Episode 47
« on: February 07, 2009, 11:33:43 AM »
Sweet! I loves me some radio trivia. I feel like this podcast doesn't get enough praise sometimes, but it's always a fun listen. There's some excellent videogame music out there, and it's fun to be reminded of songs from games I haven't played in years, as well as hear songs I've never heard before. (I've got a short list accumulating of games to find simply because I liked their music featured on these podcasts.) I look forward to listening to the new episode this weekend. Keep up the good work!

Nice author icon by the way, NovaQ.  :) Luigi is my best character in Smash Brothers because a certain pink dinosaur wasn't included for some strange reason.

Thanks! Click the link in my signature for a closer look at the picture. I spent a while working on it (it was my first time in Photoshop) and it makes me sad that it's so small on the forums. I think I might try a few more of my own takes on Smash Bros. taunts.

Don't bash Mario Sunshine and you will be fine.
Now that's a game I need to play again, as years have gone by since my one and only play though. Would I still be lynched if I claimed that I didn't particularly like it, but am willing to give it another chance, and I actually think that I would actually enjoy it the second time around?

Now that was a bit of an awkward sentence...

Man, posting on NWR sounds hardcore...
It sort of is for certain people. For example, I myself created my account four years ago but it wasn't until about three months ago that I started actually posting on a regular basis. And by "regular basis" I mean about 2 posts a day. I don't feel like my presence here is any different than it was four years ago, probably because this forum is incredibly active and I don't have the time to keep up with it all.

It's a shame, because this place seems like a good community for those who can get themselves to be a part of it.

Hey, two posts a day doesn't sound that bad. That's probably about what I'll be capable of. I would think (hope) that, as long as you make your posts count, it'll add to the community in a positive and worthwhile way.

And with all that said, I wouldn't be surprised (or offended) if my post here, amidst those of the veterans and current regulars, gets no responses...

Welcome to the forums!  Be sure to get an avatar.  Without one, I'll inadvertently skim over your posts.  (Not claiming it's rational; it's just the way it is.)

No, that makes sense. I sometimes do the same thing. I drew myself an avatar that I hope to finish and upload this weekend. Thanks for the welcome! (I'm not sure why I assumed people would be semi-unfriendly around here, but I'm glad to be proven otherwise.)

Alright, avatar's up. I hope I won't get skimmed over now...

Spak can I ask why you don't have Madworld on there?

BTW I am really tempted to get Tenchu, it has been a LONG time since I played one and this game sounds like a lot of fun and does not seem to take itself too seriously.

I don't have MadWorld, because I have chosen to not my play extremely violent games.  I don't have anything personally against them, but I don't really get that much glee out of creatively killing NPCs in horribly violent ways.  And honestly, I don't find humor in spurting gallons of digital blood on the floor.  (It if for this reason I have only seen the television edit of Kill Bill vol 1.)

You know, I tend to agree. Back when the first Turok came out for N64, I got it almost exclusively for the gore. But nowadays, extreme violence in my videogame doesn't do much for my interest in it at all. (It almost has a negative effect.) I became interested in No More Heroes not when I heard that it was raunchy style mature, but after I heard that it was a lot of fun to play. After playing and enjoying it myself, I gave the extreme violence and such a chance and saw the humor in it. Aside from the grotesque violence, Madworld has an interesting art style and personality from the videos so far released. But I want to hear (or preferably experience) how it plays before I make a decision on it.

Hey, thanks! That was a close one. I am outta' here!

Maybe I should check out that NeoGAF place instead. Everyone's always mentioning it around here. Or the GameFAQS boards...

Turtles in Time was one of my favorite games a kid. I'd love it if they could develop a level devoted solely to that game. Maybe you could fight in the various time periods it featured, each one with its own hazards to look out for. After 30 second to a minute, you'd get swept through time to the next period. (Kinda like the castle siege level in Brawl, actually.)

It has felt a little intimidating just reading the forums now that I've joined; I've been feeling that I must immediately make a name for myself with distinctive style and strong opinions. It's nice to see that becoming a solid member of a forum is something that may take a while.

I've been reading the forums for the past couple of years or so, and y'all definitely have developed an interesting community.

I don't see posting here as being impossibly difficult or intimidating, though. I just don't like doing things half-assed.

That video suggests that the fighting might be a bit slower than Smash Bros. Then again, it could just be an early video.

As long as you can throw your enemies into the TV screen, I'm there.

So, I'm a super-new member. (This is like, my fourth of fifth post.) It's interesting and somewhat encouraging to hear about so many current members that I recognize having been lurkers and severely infrequent posters for so long. Hm, acronyms and such (Buh, D. O. S.??? What the???). I'm going to look over your help page a little more closely this weekend to figure it out. Thanks.

New members that actively participated in online play would be beneficial to the site overall.

Right now all I've got with online play is Brawl and - surprise, surpsrise - it hasn't given me a quality experience online so far.

I'm interested in playing something with some of you all, though. The Conduit isn't too far away...

448
Hey all. I've been a mostly regular reader of the site since the early days of the GameCube. I started checking out the forums when Brawl's Dojo first opened up. I've been lurking ever since -- until now.

In one of the recent Podcasts (129, I think), there was a letter response about the site having to change with time and how staff members have to shift in and out of roles. It made me more aware of just how fortunate it is that NWR has been around for so long, but how possible it is for the site to eventually disappear. Then EGM, a magazine I used to read as a child, got shut down. And then Bill left the forums and Mario was booted. I was reading through the pages and pages of Bill's final thread and it finally hit me that I should actually join these forums.

That said, I'm afraid that I don't get to play videogames as much as I'd like to anymore. I may not have a ton of things to say, but I hope in some small way to add something positive to this community and keep it going.

General Gaming / Re: Mirror's Edge
« on: February 03, 2009, 05:55:12 PM »
You're right about the differences, as Mirror's Edge feels more about working your momentum and finding the best route at the same time. Implementing too much of that feel would probably take away from the exploration aspect of the Metroid games.

Still though, backtracking through areas in the 2D Metroid games with nimble jumps and maneuvers is something I missed somewhat in the Prime series. But maybe it's just something that will have to stay in the 2D games.

Hey, long-time reader of the site (since the early GC days) and less-of-a-long-time-but-still-a-while-now lurker (since the opening of the Smash Bros. Dojo for Brawl). This question just came to me after reading your post:

Do you think that, hypothetically, the jumping (namely wall jumping) mechanics of Mirror's Edge could be implemented into the Metroid Prime games? I never liked that wall jumping in that series was limited to a few special, clearly marked areas. It felt like Retro was just semi-unnaturally forcing a favorite ability from the older games into the newer ones. Wall jumping never felt nearly as organic as it did in the older titles.

That kind of jumping could, as Retro surely discovered in their developments, be tricky for the player. But what if the mechanics were set up a little differently than the regular jumping? To do a wall jump, you would have to approach the wall at a particular angle or range of angles, place yourself very close to the wall and, instead of jumping as soon as you hit the jump button, released the button to trigger the wall jump. As soon as you pressed and held the jump button while against a wall at the correct angle, your perspective would suddenly shift to the direction you'd jump toward upon releasing the button (kind of like what you manually have to do in Mirror's Edge with an additional button). Maybe while holding the button, you could adjust slightly where you'll jump with the Wiimote pointer. And, once you released, you jumped.

Having the wall jumping based off of button release rather than button press would give you a little extra delay-time to get your bearings, and it would allow you to "cancel" any accidental wall jumps (say, if you wanted to simply do a second jump near a wall, but accidentally got too close to the wall). Adding the mechanic would likely make the Prime games a little less accessible, but I think it would help bring back some of the most fun aspects of the 2D Metroids.

So, what does anyone think? Complete crap idea, or something that Retro will hopefully work on when they inevitably begin work on another 3D Metroid game?

(Maybe I should take this post to a Metroid thread...)
