It could really use a hardcore survival horror game where you use Kinect to run away from undead abominations trying to eat your soul.

I wonder if Capcom can make a rail shooter for the Kinect.

Heh, the 3DS has already outsold all systems for the year except for the PSP and that'll happen next week.  Yep, it'll be the year of the 3DS for sure.

This can't be good. I was hoping this game was going to be released here since I enjoyed the first one, but if the PS3 version outsells it about 3 to 1, I could see only the PS3 version being brought over.

I'm thinking that Xseed will bring it over if nothing else. The last one they did sold well they said.

It's not surprising, though.  I think the PS3 port of Tales of Graces sold something like 3 or 4:1 over the Wii version.  The RPG audience is not on the Wii, or at the very least they have both systems and primarily play on PS3.  That's not surprising, either, considering the PS2 was the go-to system for RPGs last generation.

As for the 3DS sales numbers, that's as expected considering the Japanese obsession with handhelds and this is a brand-new handheld.
There was a Signature here. It's gone now.

I guess it's technically an RPG, but it's more like an expanded Harvest Moon, which are usually on Wii, so I thought there was more of an audience for such games on it. Oh well.

They are too busy playing the last Rune Factory: Time Sink Edition to go out and buy the new one.

A fourth Way of the Samurai game? Ooo, hope that makes it across the Pacific. Those games always look interesting.

Layton and Nintendogs have stayed in place this week but every other 3DS game seemed to have dropped. I guess this was to be expected.

Press Releases
Quote from: Nintendo
Nintendo’s Wii™ console has crossed the 35 million sales mark in the United States, according to the NPD Group. More than 454,000 Wii consoles sold in February to put Wii across the 35 million mark faster than any other console in U.S. history.

February proved to be a notable month for Nintendo software as well. Not only was Just Dance 2 from Ubisoft the No. 1 best-selling game of the month with more than 554,000 sold, but four Nintendo games reached new sales milestones. Donkey Kong Country™ Returns for the Wii console, which launched in November 2010, crossed the 2 million mark in February, while New Super Mario Bros.™ Wii, which launched in November 2009, just crossed the 8 million sales mark.

On the portable side, the Pokémon™ SoulSilver Version game for the Nintendo DS™ family of systems launched in March 2010 and crossed the 2 million sales mark in February, while the New Super Mario Bros. game, which launched in May 2006, just passed 9 million in sales. These milestones further demonstrate the “evergreen” nature of games that play on Nintendo systems.
Quote from: Microsoft
“February was the biggest non-holiday month of console sales in the U.S. in the history of the Xbox, according to NPD. For the second month in a row, Xbox 360 was the number one console, maintaining its lead in the U.S. as the top selling console in 2011,”

MvC3 couldn't beat out the Black Ops. Still, 790k units is pretty nice for it. I'm surprised that Dead Space 2 hanged in there and is over the newcomers of Bulletstorm and Killzone 3. Good on Visceral Games.

Ah, Mario Sports Mix at 10th. I wonder if it will chart next month or will bad word of mouth sink it.

Not horribly surprising, Killzone 3 is a PS3 only game that tends not to put up amazing number and Bulletstorm is a new IP FPS. Dead Space has developed a pretty big following on PS3 and 360.

The first DS did pretty medicore sales numbers, I wouldn't say it has a big following.

It had mediocre sales numbers at first, but over the following months word of mouth led it to become a million-unit seller if I remember correctly.  I'm happy to see Dead Space 2 doing so well, as it is a pretty awesome game and deserves to sell well.  I'm a little disappointed that Bulletstorm performed as relatively low on the charts as it did, as I recently completed it and it was the most fun I've had playing an FPS in years.

I'll be interested to see how well Black Ops really did last month when GameTrailers' Invisible Walls podcast releases the individual SKU numbers sometime in the coming months.  I get the feeling these rankings would be quite a bit different without combining SKUs.

I think the FPS bubble is and has been starting to burst a little besides a few exceptions.

Also what Brood said, DS may not have had stellar sales but it is a game where word of mouth has propelled it forward, including a couple spin offs, and a couple animated moves as well. Killzone 3 is on a console with a limited userbase and even that user base isn't jumping over the series. And Bulletstorm is perceived as yet another FPS, whether it is true or not that is likely the perception

It's more that the FPS genre is on a path to consolidation where the winners rise higher while the rest sinks lower. So you either get a huge megahit or you lose.

That sounds more likely. After the rhythm game fiasco with Guitar Hero, it was easier for people to predict a similar crash for the FPS, but the difference is, the top end of this genre is much more sustainable. I have my qualms with the Call of Duty series, but unlike Guitar Hero, it's not suffering from over-saturation because there's only one per year, and having two companies interchange development allows a bit more creativity from game to game - definitely more than what Neversoft was doing.

On the lower end... I don't know if it's quite as bipolar as that, although ultimately that comes back to the debate of what's a success and what's a failure. Has a first-person shooter failed if it isn't a multi-million seller? Take something like Homefront, an upcoming new IP from a developer with no real pedrigree. Will that hit the high end in terms of sales? Doubtful. Does that mean it's destined to 'fail'? Well, to me, if a high-budget project breaks even in this competitive market, it's been moderately successful.

There was a great discussion on this week's Weekend Confirmed about whether there's a way to make a game in the range between a $15 download title and an attempt at a huge blockbuster for $60. For the FPS genre to have a future outside of the top tier of COD, Halo, and the like, it needs to move away from the current model of everyone trying to do what those games do to smaller, more specialized games that aren't designed with the target and budget of selling millions.

That's just sales for a single game (the old record holder was Wii Play according to NPD's tracking).
