Market the Revolution: What's the slogan?
« on: December 12, 2005, 01:19:12 PM »
The marketing almost writes itself for the Revolution. Can you come up with a slogan that doesn't sound cheesy and forced? I didn't see a thread on this.
I like:

"The Revolution, because 'evolution' works too slow."
"Are you brave enough for change?"
"Become you're own Revolution."

What else you folks got?

Well, it's kind of impossible to make a campaign until they announce the system's actual name.

There are a few things I think should be avoided at all costs regarding any slogans.

1. No "either or" stuff.  That would be saying the competition offers this but we offer that.  It can sound good in theory but the problem is then it makes people choose.  It makes people think about what the competition offers and Nintendo is the odd man out and their "method" is probably going to be seen as the weird one.  Plus this kind of wording assumes that you agree with Nintendo and that the PS3/X360 way of doing things is bad.  A lot of people think it's pretty good.  Saying Nintendo is offering something totally different might turn them off.  I want "better" but I don't want "different".  That suggests what I like from before isn't there.  Change is scary.  Don't directly mention change.

2. Don't make out that gaming as it exists is broken.  I don't think it is and a lot of people don't think it is.  We don't need two-failures-in-a-row old fuddy duddy Nintendo telling us otherwise.  Gaming as is is very popular and it's best that the Rev doesn't look like it's going to fix what ain't broke.  I don't even think the "new way of gaming" would be good.  The "future of gaming is here" isn't so bad.  But don't make out like existing gaming sucks because it doesn't.

3. No challenges to the consumer.  "Are you brave enough?"  "Do you dare?"  Stuff like that.  I think the Rev concept is pretty scary so don't draw attention to how scary and unknown it is.  It should be the opposite, very welcoming.  After all it is supposed to attract those who are "intimidated" by gaming so adapting it should be easy not some brave challenge.

4.  No "who are you?"  The only people who identify with Nintendo's franchises are existing fans and there's no point in targeting them with marketing.  Nintendo is often accused of rehashing and I felt the whole "who are you?" campaign just confirmed that for everyone.  Plus it was such a flop for the Cube I think it would so stupid to continue to use it.  Plus the Rev is supposed to be innovative.  How can it be innovative if it's just the same games from 1985 all over again?  If you asked a gamer today "Who are you?"  They would respond "Master Chief" or "that guy from GTA".  Nintendo sadly hasn't been relevant for quite a few years now so few gamers are really going to associate themselves with characters they're barely familiar with or they associate as childish.

The Revolution has Begun
Game Over
Innovation Included
Be Original
What Next?
The Rules Have Changed
Start A Revolution (transition to power button)

graphic transitions on the "on" letters -- Innovation > Immersion > Revolution

A cool visual would be to make it seem like an underground movement set in a post-apocalyptic climate. Silhouettes of helicopters in the sky, the military setting up wired fences, people trying to break through or climb over them. Police dogs barking. Looks like a riot scene. Shots of people running into an abandoned factory. Cut to shots of people moving their controllers around (exaggerated movements like in the Revolution teaser) mixed with game footage. Cut to logo. A little dramatic, but it's cool.
"wow."

And that sir is good stuff. Good stuff indeed.

"Well, it's kind of impossible to make a campaign until they announce the system's actual name."

I will bet you a six pack of frosty goodness that whatever the final name is, it will have "Revoulotion" in the title.

They could have a commercial for the download service that's a crazy montage of old Nintendo commercials and slogans.

"Now you're playing with power!"
"...Super Power!"
"The Best Play Here!"
"Play It Loud!"
"Change The System!"
"Get N Or Get Out!"
"Who Are You?"
etc.

Especially the memorable NES and Super NES ones (except maybe the Super Metroid-only "The Best Play Here" that didn't last very long).  The montage could have quick cuts of recognizeable games, and memorable commercials like the two kids playing The Legend Of Zelda (which is apparently very rad).

As for the Revolution itself?  Something short and to the point.  Like "Hands On"...I dunno.

Simple.

"Join the Revolution!"

"Chimps are like fine wine: I drink them both." - A friend of a friend of mine.

Ooh, or have the people in the live action parts be holding the Rev controller instead of guns.

I don't believe Revolution will be the final name, but it may be in the slogan.  The present slogan focuses on the gamer; I believe that they will continue with this type of theme as the code name suggests.

I would like a whole lot of simple Slogans describing ingame actions with the Tagline "Feel the Game."

Here is an example.

Toss,
Flip,
Cut,
Blend,
Cook...

"FEEL THE GAME"

Real Chef Cooking Revolution.

Or another:

Grind,
Jump,
Spin,
Flip

"Feel the Game"

Skate! Revolution

Me and my friends came up with the idea that Nintendo could incorporate the DS into their advertising and also start a contest campaign in the process with the slogan...

Do Something Revolutionary

The contest ideas with such a slogan practically describe themselves.
They gave a war, nobody came, imagine all the fuss. They'd have to send themselves instead of...sending us. Yeah (People of the Generation - by Scatman John)

why are people ignoring this? With what little footage is available that actually quite good. In a silly demented-sparkling innovation sort of way. Oh wait..

Well, on the positive (or negative if you're Ian & Co.), using that music would definately get the attention of Beatles-era consumers.

Perms commercial is Satin. Now that's what I'm talking bout baby boy. The only thing I think you should add is "change the game" then "change the future". Other than that minor change, "Best Revolution Ad Evar"!!!
