NWR Forums Discord / Safe Words XX: #2 Is #1 - Sign Up Thread
« on: July 29, 2022, 09:51:48 PM »
Having played Safe Words on these forums over the years, one of the key things I've learned is that being second is as good as, or in many cases even better than finishing first. That inspired me to host the game for the first time with a simple theme of celebrating the true heroes in our world, the sidekicks and runners up who make everything possible.

Sign ups are open now, and if we can get enough people I intend to start the game Monday, August 8.

I want to really go for this this year, though I'm a little ashamed that some of the games I want to knock out are things I said I wanted to get done last year.

Netflix is the most expensive of the major streaming services, and its lineup compares less and less favorably as time goes on. It feels like they're kind of coasting on the inertia they had from getting to the market first and don't really have a good idea of what to do now.

    • Pokémon Stadium Don't think so, but HAL made it so it'd be a choice, not a legal issue.
    • Pokémon Stadium 2 Don't think so, but HAL made it so it'd be a choice, not a legal issue.

The Pokémon Stadium games could be interesting. The big draw of those games was being able to connect the GameBoy games to the console. Though there are things you can do without the connectivity. There's also the possibility of connecting the game with Pokémon Home, which seems like it'd be a lot of work that Game Freak wouldn't want to do.

If they wanted to get really ambitious they could add Game Boy games to the service and let you transfer Pokémon from those to Stadium.[/list]

Disney just greenlit a series for Disney+ based on the premise raised by this thread.

I couldn't decide which one to go with so I took a cue from Mop it up and selected one randomly, and it did me just as much good as it did her.

Also, it would be nice to get PilotWings 64, which for some reason was never on the Virtual Console on Wii or Wii U.

If they're going to add more Rare games I would love to see Perfect Dark. On a different note, Harvest Moon 64, which I believe was on the Wii U Virtual Console, would be nice.

Paramount+ was going to be my choice since I just started watching Star Trek: Lower Decks which I'm enjoying, but Khush had to ruin that with his negativity. I suppose I'll have to settle for the home of the best non-Star Trek sci-fi show, The Expanse, on Amazon Prime Video.

One of the first things I bought when I got my Xbox 360 14 years ago, and really one of the reasons I wanted the system in the first place, was Mass Effect. It really seemed like a game designed specifically for me with its big sci-fi story. So anyway, I'm finally getting around to playing it now, two console generations later after buying it again via the recent remaster, and I'm really enjoying it. Probably should have done this sooner.

I am subscribed to Apple TV+ but it's not the last one I used, since that particular one has already been eliminated.

I meant it's the last one I used in real life, earlier today.

Yikes! How many streaming services do you subscribe to?

Probably too many, but at least it's helping me in this game!

I'm a little surprised they're not just dropping the port entirely. It's kind of weird how Apple is so willing to change ports and stuff on the Mac side of things, where they were an early adopter of USB-C, but they've dragged their feet on this.

I took a couple breaks in the middle, but tonight I finished off Pikmin 3 Deluxe on hard mode, with all the fruit. This was my third time through the game between Wii U and Switch, and the first on hard mode. I was a huge fan of the first two, and this is the best one yet.

A Metroidvania with great boss battles and '80s action movie cheese.

    http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/60349/blast-brigade-vs-the-evil-legion-of-dr-cread-switch-review

The Metroidvania genre has seen a lot of entries on Switch recently, including great games like Axiom Verge 2 and Nintendo’s own Metroid Dread. Those games set the bar very high for a style of game that was already very difficult to pull off in a satisfying way. Blast Brigade vs. The Evil Legion of Dr. Cread had a lot to live up to, and while it hits some impressive highs, its flaws prevent it from reaching the level of those games.

Featuring a story straight out of an ‘80s action movie, Blast Brigade starts with you controlling a secret agent infiltrating an island lair of an evil scientist. Along the way you meat other characters, with a story conceit allowing you to switch between them at any time. Each character has their own special abilities that give you new ways to navigate the environment, but apart from the story reasons, having to switch back and forth only gets in the way of traversal, even though it’s rarely necessary to switch in quick succession.

Compared to many other Metroidvania style games, Blast Brigade has a heavy focus on action and combat. Each section of the game is littered with enemies, and each one can be very dangerous if you’re not careful. Just surviving from checkpoint to checkpoint can be a challenge, particularly when you’re unexpectedly thrown into a seemingly unnecessary kill room.

While Blast Brigade features an open world, the main storyline plays out in a very linear fashion. There are collectibles to go back for, and luckily there is a fast travel system which helps facilitate that, but the world feels less organic because of the way it’s laid out. Given the action focus and difficulty, the collectibles are definitely worth going back for, though, as they can expand your health meter and allow you to expand your base, giving you more powerful weapons.

By far the best part of Blast Brigade, however, are its boss battles. Unlike the standard combat, which sometimes feels like a slog, the bosses feature creative designs with intricate patterns that provide unique challenges. While the boss fights are even more challenging than the rest of an already difficult game, they feel less frustrating because of their creativity.

Despite its problems, Blast Brigade is fun if you don’t mind beating your head against the wall at times. While its linear nature doesn’t always do a good job of scratching the Metroidvania itch, what’s there is a solid action game with fantastic boss battles.

Movies & TV / Re: Rate the last TV show you've seen
    « on: April 10, 2022, 08:38:14 PM »
I've been watching a lot of stuff lately, but there is one series I want to talk about in particular since I know we have some Community fans here. I could have sworn I saw talk about it on these forums, but neither the site's search engine nor Google could find anything. I just finished watching the 1st Season of Mythic Quest, a 2020-ongoing comedy series by Charlie Day that is currently streaming on Apple TV. It's basically "What if Community Took Place in a Game Development Studio?".

And it's the funniest goddamn thing I've seen in years.

The show revolves around an eccentric cast of game developers running a World of WarCraft-esque MMO, with egos and problems of the day cropping up to cause total chaos such as infighting over the implementation of a new game mechanic; infighting over increased monetization in the game (spearheaded by Community veteran Danny Pudi as basically the show's heel); the game's servers getting hacked; Kotaku running a story claiming the game has a Nazi problem (in probably the funniest...and most accurate...episode of the show); etc.

What's interesting is that as funny as the show is, it can also flip on a dime at times to do some really dramatic and heart-touching moments, such as an entire episode about the birth and death of an indie studio that's largely separate from the main cast. There's also an amazing episode that takes place within the 2020 pandemic that just captures the feeling of that moment so fantastically.

My one grip with the show is that some characters just don't seem to have much to do, namely Ashley Birch as a disgruntled lesbian QA tester. Yes, the lesbian part is important. It's the beginning and end of her character, at least in Season 1 as she spends the entirety of it pining for another QA tester. I also really wanted to see the put-upon HR manager and obviously-on-the-verge-of-a-breakdown Community Manager characters a lot more than their handful of appearances.

If you have Apple TV (or can sail the high seas), I highly recommend this show. This is JUST the show for people like us. It understands gaming, the writing is utterly on-point, and the performances are great.

I need to get back to that show. I've watched some of it and really enjoyed it, but for whatever reason drifted away from it. There are just so many things to watch these days.

You have to wonder if it would have been as successful if it had gone by its original title, "War, What Is It Good For?".

Haven't posted in this thread for a while, but I just thought I'd congratulate Canada on qualifying for the World Cup for the first time since 1986 and only the second time ever. They've got a fun, young, very talented team, and have looked very good in qualifying. And after the big win by the U.S. tonight they'll be in as well as long as they don't lose by 6 on Wednesday in Costa Rica, getting that monkey off their back from 4 years ago.
