Murder by Death, while now more known for a folksy sound, originated as a fairly muted Indie beginnings under their first album "Like the Exorcist, but More Breakdancing". This debut album features several instrumental interludes and muted vocals that have let sprawling piano and cello set the mood and theme of the album. Since then, they have branched out into music that transports you in a setting of the wild west, with fast tempo'd guitar & cello, piano accompaniment, to thoughtful ballads and muted solo guitar songs, and a vocalist who has gone from a mid-range thin voice to a deep bellow.
If you like anything remotely in the folk wheelhouse, this is worth a listen. If not, you might still be able to find a song or two you appreciate from them. Give them a listen.
