A New Yoshi's Island Is Coming to the 3DS
« on: April 17, 2013, 11:04:04 AM »

Yoshi is back and in 3D.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33890

A new entry in the Yoshi Island series is coming to the 3DS.

Announced at today's Nintendo Direct, Yoshi's Island for 3DS will be an all new adventure and will feature similar visuals to other entries but in 3D. Besides usual Yoshi moves, including the ground pound, new actions are added that will take advantage of 3DS capabilities.

No release date is annouced at this time.

Isn't this kind of what Miyamoto did not want with the art style of the original? What do you call that, pre-rendered sprites? Excited for the game but honestly it looks ugly only because Yoshi is pretty lifeless and stiff. The colora are all washed out like Brawl too, it needs to be vibrant and more animated. Still Mario and Luigi Dream Team looks way better than it did originally and so did Mario U, kid Icarus and a few others.

Hopefully the level design will be leagues better than the last one.

Yeah this contradicts Miyamoto's statements regarding DKC and using that "prerendered" art style in the original Yoshi's Island.

3D Yoshi in a crayon world looks very jarring.

They're probably doing it to make it look somewhat consistent with Yarn Yoshi which is also polygonal.

As to game -- i'm very excited, i LOVED that game on GBA. One of my favourites game ever.

Is the DS sequel any good?

Also, I noticed how dark the colors are, which makes the game look bland.

I think the DS game is great, a lot of people seem to dislike it though and I have never understood why.

They pulled a Dk64 with it, that's why.

This game seems to have workingman's graphics, where they aren't anything flashy but they get the job done.  NSMB has graphics like that and that LttP 2 they announced gives me that vibe as well.  I don't really like it as it comes across as Nintendo putting in the bare minimum effort they can get away with.  Nintendo doesn't have the break the bank on cutting edge graphics every time but it would be nice to get some sort of style going.  This game doesn't look pretty or ugly, it's just PLAIN.

There is some hilarity in the irony of Yoshi's Island having dull generic graphics.  That was a different and younger Miyamoto.  Today Miyamoto is in the position of those that told him to go with DKC graphics back in the day.

The style looks more like Yoshi's Story than Yoshi's Island, but it's still early so things could change.

Ian Sane:  I am ok with working man graphics like you say, if the game if fun and engaging.  It isn't like the graphics are BAD.

Now, I am really excited for this game, because it is one of my all time favorite Mario series.  It is original and not many games play like it at all.  This will be a blast to play.

If you mean that they turned it into collectathon, original game had that too, from what i can tell from GBA port, i remember how hard it was to get 100% on all worlds.

Not quite what I was referring to, only partially. The original never felt like a collectathon because you would only miss out on a few levels if you didn't 100% each and every stage. In this one you didn't have to either but it was more of a chore collecting  because in Yoshi DS you had to constantly switch between characters and back track here and there to collect everything. Not to mention the level design and music just couldn't compare to the first.

My problem with Yoshi's Island DS was it was too damn cheap at times.  Trying to 100% some of the levels is nearly impossible because of how they were designed and constantly have to check both screens.  The fact that the action in this game takes place on one screen already tells me it'll be better then the DS game since the dual screen bullshit that lead to a lot of that games cheapness will be gone.

Here's what I say to those who say the inclusion of 3D models goes against Miyamoto's counter-DKC game:  Super FX!  Yoshi's Island had it, and it was noticeable!

Super FX is not the same as DKC's prerendered graphics.

Miyamoto allegedly claimed he disliked the prerendered CG graphics of DKC, which is why he made Yoshi's Island have "crayon" graphics.

He didn't say he disliked the CG graphics. In fact, later he said he liked the game. He was mad at the time because the marketing team of Nintendo originally told him they didn't want to release Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island with the graphics it originally had, they wanted it to look like DKC since it had just come out and sold huge. He never disliked the game, he was just upset at the marketing team and took it out on Rare in a interview (saying DKC proved that people would put up with mediocre gameplay as long as the art is good). So even when he dissed DKC in the interview, he never said the graphics were bad.

That's what he says now. He may not have been so level-headed at the time, what with the table-flipping kidnapper reputation he's been known to have.

Actually, the " people would put up with mediocre gameplay as long as the art is good" quote was from a 1995 interview. So he may have attacked the game (which he later apologized for), but he never said anything bad about the graphics. If anything, it proved that he liked the graphics.
