Nintendo Gaming / [GDC] Miyamoto's creative process
« on: April 04, 2009, 02:46:47 AM »
The best goalie on the Seattle Seahawks and my dad, Dave Sirlin, wrote a summary/cool stuff about Iwata's speech at GDC. Some very interesting stuff about how Miyamoto constructs games that I think a lot of other developers could stand to benefit from. Here:

I thought Miyamoto's prototype and "kidnap" methods were really interesting.

General Gaming / King of Kong and other video game documentaries
« on: March 28, 2009, 03:25:48 AM »
I saw "King of Kong" on netflix-instant and thought I would take a bit and watch it, combining my love of documentaries and video games. (I unironically watched the documentary on the Helvetica font btw) If you have netflix, you should be able to stream it on your pc or 360 or whatever.

When Steve Wiebe got laid off, he turned to the classic arcade game Donkey Kong for solace; soon, he decided to challenge Billy Mitchell's long-standing record score. So began the bitter rivalry that lies at the heart of this curiously compelling documentary. Providing a history of competitive video gaming and a look at some of the key players, The King of Kong is at its best when revealing just how far Mitchell will go to retain his crown.

It's easily the best game documentary I've seen, and it's wildly hilarious/gripping/sad/etc. It paints Billy Mitchell as a major douchebag and perhaps deservedly so. (watch the part carefully where his Billy's goon looks emotionally destroyed after Steve rolls into his first live event. It is hilarious what you can read on his face.)

Seen any good documentaries/programs/etc on games lately? Share 'em if you got 'em.

General Gaming / Super Street Fighter II HD Remix: argh i can't roll
« on: November 26, 2008, 06:57:20 AM »
Street Fighter II owns. It is the basis and the magic formula from which all other fighting games are derived. To deny SF2 is to deny your place as a gamer, and the only possible outcome is to buy Super SF2 X HD Remix or kill yourself.

The online play owns. I just played lag-free matches with my friend in Japan. From America. No other console fighting game can do this! I swear to god I can't play people outside my state in SC4 without it being *** as hell. SF2 is champ!

What's new/sweet about HD remix?
Everything is redrawn (by those comic book guys! Udon!) for HD and all of the music is remixed (by guys from oc remix!). There have been slight gameplay tweaks. Some moves (mostly supers) now have alternate motions to execute them (as well as the original motions). Online play owns. It's 15 bucks.

how do i frikken hadoken??
These are some useful resources if you find yourself getting owned despite being able to beat your little brother on the super nintendo all the time:

The music owns!
Yes. It was created by the nerdy, righteous contributors at ocremix. Inspired by the previous compilation, blood on the asphalt. Download them at ocremix.org!

It begets a unique and natural simplicity of a highly discliplined aesthetic of times past, not unlike the gentle majesty of a single blossoming sakura tree in the spring season.

If you get the dlc however, you are probably a retarded barbarian and I hope you get disemboweled

Which weapon defeats each boss?

Handy boss weapon flowchart. The weapon of a boss will counter the next one clockwise:

What is the best order to take on the bosses?

Here is the best order by my reckoning; if you think you can improve on this, please share by all means!

Galaxy Man > Hornet Man > Splash Woman > Concrete Man > Jewel Man > Plug Man > Tornado Man > Magma Man

Why this order? Hornet Man is fundamental to racking up a ton of 1ups and screws (money) throughout a number of the other stages. You know, it seeks out and grabs otherwise unreachable items. By doing Galaxy Man first, which is easy to beat with just the buster and has no unreachable items, you can use the black hole bomb as a ghetto-counter to Hornet Man. You can also pre-emptively wrangle enough screws to get an e-tank in your fight against Hornet Man (if you need it).

Also, defeating the 5th boss gives you the rush jet. This will help you safely speed through otherwise tough sections (like in tornado man and plug man stages).

General protips:

- The weapon designed to be a counter for each boss also cuts through/disables their weapon as well. Keep this in mind to avoid damage!

- Jewel man jumps when you jump!

- The magma shotgun charges up, but may not necessarily do more damage against a non-hornetman boss.

- You can clear your black hole bomb off the screen by pausing, which will let you get a new one out

- You can steer the rush jet up and down! Holy ****!

Other bosses:
fire dragon : black hole bomb
avalanche boulder thing : hornet
spin flower : magma shotgun (mega buster if you don't have it)

wily boss #1 : concrete shot, mega buster
wily boss #2 : part one - laser trident,  part two - magma shotgun (charge it!),  part three - hornet/buster/trident/bh bomb  (?)
wily boss #3 : black hole bomb (make sure not to waste it during the level)
wily: part one - mega buster, part two - concrete shot/tornado (thanks Rimmer!), part three - plug ball

For Wily part 3, you can use magma and hornets to get a little damage when he's out of reach. You can use black hole bomb to defend against all of his attacks. You can use the plug ball for big damage when he's actually in reach.

How do I speed run?
Don't die! You go back to either the beginning or mid-point of the stage and that eats up more time than anything. Once you can get in the ballpark of one-lifing the game, then one hour is a breeze and shooting for anything less than that is more a matter of fine tuning and performing accurately.

Pick up the spike instant-death protection from the store!

Need more help?
Youtube is a better source than gamefaqs for showing you how stuff is done.

NWR Forums Discord / who changed Morari's title??
« on: September 12, 2008, 06:27:14 PM »
Morari is a terrible poster and his title needs to be changed back to something pink and extolling his love of master chief immediately. I left my admin powers in my other pants in the wash and can't do it myself. If you haven't forgotten, he's the one who posted this gem:

Halo doesn't drive gamers insane, it drives Xbox owning frat boys insane. Real gamers would know that it is merely an overhyped franchise (thanks to Microsoft's money) that doesn't, hasn't, and won't do anything particularly new or interesting in terms of the genre. Furthermore, it's a genre that utterly and absolutely sucks outside the realm of the PC. That's right boys and girls, gamepads weren't meant to play first-person-shooters and Halo is as generic as they come in an already generic genre! The kind of people that go batty over Halo are probably not usually the type to be interested in a "kid-friendly" Nintendo game anyway.

Note: I use the word kid-friendly because for whatever reason the word "k!ddie" is forbidden. Maybe to prevent "k!ddie pr0n", eh? Thanks again NWR for having some of the dumbest, most overbearing word censors to ever grace an internet forum. Fascists.

He also regularly gets owned by the filters on key awful terms and his posting has really has not gotten any better. Quote this if you're down.
