Despite backlash, Disney confirms it won’t rehire James GunnJames Gunn won’t be rehired, but Alan Horn met with him to “clear the air.”
Bob Chipman (moviebob on the YouTubes) floated the idea that Horn, a possible successor to Bob Iger who is set to retire in the next few years, hastily fired James Gunn in July but repeatedly refused to rehire Gunn because he didn’t want to appear weak or indecisive if a lower level executive (Kevin Feige) could convince him to change his mind. The meeting between Horn and Gunn may have been to discuss Gunn’s future with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Apparently, James Gunn has a pay or play contract so not only does Disney have to pay him for the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 script they’re using (the movie is in pre-production so restarting from scratch is not really an option), but it has to pay him to
not direct the movie. Chipman mused that who Disney/Marvel chooses as James Gunn’s replacement could hint at what is really be happening here. If one of the actors or even Sean Gunn were hired, this would suggest that James Gunn, who is getting paid either way, won’t get credit for directing though he will be heavily involved with production. That may be the best case scenario if James Gunn isn’t fully reinstated.
Basically:
1. Alan Horn fired James Gunn as a knee-jerk reaction to alt-right faux outrage
2. Real outrage from people for Gunn’s firing, not his tweets
3. Public support for Gunn from cast and crew as well as behind the scenes support from Kevin Feige/Marvel
4. Horn realizes he done fucked up
5. Horn and Gunn meet to “clear the air” AKA discuss how Horn can both save face and keep Gunn in involved with Vol. 3 and the cosmic side of the MCU
6. Marvel hires say, Sean Gunn to direct Vol. 3 but James Gunn’s fingerprints are all over the movie
7. No one will fucking remember this in a year
