Kingpin speaks about Kicking Ass and Crossing Over

Vincent D'Onofrio spoke with Screen Crush about his role as Wilson Fisk -- better known as The Kingpin -- in Marvel and Netflix's upcoming "Daredevil" series.

"I mean the whole Marvel world is so huge," said D'Onofrio. "But I gotta tell you, I couldn’t be working for nicer people. I really am. I’m just having a great time. The whole -- the way that we’re shooting it, our Daredevil, everybody that’s in the show, is just going so well. Tonight we have a big fight scene that’s happening. It’s the first time you see my character do something physical."

In terms of the possibility of his character and the series crossing over into other Marvel products, D'Onofrio said, "I think they have some kind of plan. I’m not really allowed to discuss what the plan is, but they have a plan. I think the beginning of the plan is series stuff with Netflix, and then they have a bigger plan to branch out, but I wouldn’t be able to tell you specifically what that is."

What did I miss?

1st & 3rd: Launch aligned, GotG is taking in more on that Thursday (the 21st day) than either TWS or IM1
2nd & 3rd: Launch aligned, GotG has taken in more Domestic Gross by it's 21st day than either TWS or IM1

4th: Total Domestic Gross - both TWS & IM1 have ended their theater run, so that is the final number. GotG is gaining on both of those numbers. At it's current pace, domestically, GotG should have passed TWS by in the next 2 weeks, and since there are no more BIG movies till Hunger Games in Nov (?), it will probably continue to rake it in for most of September as well.

5th: Total WW Gross - both TWS & IM1 have ended their theater run, so that is the final number. GotG hasn't even released in China yet, nor Japan and a few other territories. I'm sure we can cound on China for at minimum a $100M gross, and by the time that happens (opens in china late Sept I believe), I'm sure it would be well past IM1's total WW gross.
Assuming GotG has the same legs as TWS did WW, it could settle around to around $800M than $700M. Which is much more than anyone would have guessed for this movie would achieve.


to sum it all up: GotG is tracking well ahead of TWS and even ahead of IM1 domestically.
If it continues to perform at the same levels through the rest of its run, it will out gross TWS and could even match IM1's final take of over $300M domestic.


tl;dr - GotG is tracking closer to IM1 than it is TWS domestically. look forward to it breaking $300M domestic.

GotG should be passing DoFP today and jumping up into the #3 spot. All but guaranteed the #1 spot for the (Domestic) highest grossing movie of not only the summer, but the entire year by next weekend.

And guess what. That would give Chris Pratt not only 2 movies in the Top 5 for the year, but the 2 of the Top 3 grossing movies for the year (so far).

I think you mean passing Transformers. I think it will be close, but I don't see it beating Cap 2 (though it might) or especially Lego Movie domestically. I didn't think Maleficent made that much money either. Sin City won't open that well, but I'm sure it will be #1 this weekend, followed by TMNT then GotG.

But, You have it all wrong.
GotG may actually win the weekend, even though it came in second for Friday behind "If I Stay".
If it wins the weekend, it will be with around $15M or so, and then that puts it in spitting range (<$3M) of both the top 2 spots (before next weekend). It's all but guaranteed the #1 before next weekend is over. It may even climb past $300M.

Wow I'm surprised Sin City 2 did so terribly. That's like, potentially bankrupt your studio bad. That's basically $3.5 million for each of Eva Green's...assets. And what the hell is "If I Stay?"

If I stay seems to be a movie similar to the fault in our stars just with the girl from kick ass.

Sin City was always going to do bad, it's too late for a sequel and it released in a crowded timeframe unlike the 300 sequel.

On choosing the heroes they did

“It was really based on the theatrical model of The Avengers. Could you take another group of characters, The Defenders, and go about it the same way? Normally they do the big movie and then eventually they get to the group origin story. Having 13 hours to tell each of these stories, you can go right to the origin story and the action at the same time.�

On Daredevil

Right now, the writers’ rooms are open and they’re looking at casting Jessica. If you sense some hesitation in my voice, that’s classic Marvel fashion. They like to keep that veil of secrecy. But Daredevil is already shooting, since that’s out first. Eventually the series will run very close together. You can then have a separate season where the characters will cross over.�

On the movies and the tone of Daredevil comapred to the movie

The series will not be afraid to go darker than the film did. What we love about this particular set of heroes is that they’re a little more down to Earth. Costume wise and also in that these are gritty crime stories, more in the streets than in the clouds.�

I wonder how they will Jusxpostion going gritty with Iron Fist who gets his powers from Chi and is very 70s game of death, and Jessica Jones who can Fly and has super Strength. (other than the obvious mind control rape route).

I think they are avoiding that.  Its a very easy way to say, "This is not for you Mainstream."  Which is a message they don't want to send.
While Netflix has positioned itself to be more like TV.
