Nintendo of America Releases Details of November NPD
« on: December 07, 2006, 02:37:57 PM »
Wii sells "nearly" half-a-million; DS "almost" a million.  New Zelda game sells to "nearly" 9 in 10 Wii buyers.  CORRECTED.

UPDATE: The following day, Nintendo corrected this press release by deleting one sentence.  We have struck through it but left in the text so you can compare the original and corrected versions.

Wii-MARKABLE! November Sales Show Nintendo Hardware Systems Outsell All Others Combined

REDMOND, Wash., Dec. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- For video gamers, it was the month that was -- November 2006, the first time all three new home systems would be available to consumers, along with three established portable game devices.

It was a month that belonged to Nintendo.

According to independent sales data from the NPD Group, Nintendo sold 55 percent of all video game systems in November, led by the launch of the Wii(TM) home system and the incredible continuing success of the Nintendo DS(TM) portable.

In only the first seven days of availability after its Nov. 19 launch, Wii sold nearly half a million systems in the United States alone (as reported previously by Nintendo, total sales of Wii in the Americas reached 600,000 in its first eight days of availability). Despite spot shortages in some locations, well more than a million Wii systems will be available in the United States by the end of the year.

While Wii sold through at a rate of more than 70,000 a day for the seven days represented in the data (substantially higher than any other game device), November's two top sellers of any type were the Nintendo DS, at almost 920,000 units, and Game Boy® Advance, with nearly 642,000 portables sold. With Wii and Nintendo GameCube(TM) totals included, Nintendo sold through more than 2.1 million of the 3.9 million systems purchased for the month.

The data also reveals that the Wii title The Legend of Zelda®: Twilight Princess achieved sales of 412,000, representing 87 percent of all Wii purchasers, the highest industry rate of sale for any launch title since introduction of Super Mario® 64 with the Nintendo® 64 a decade ago.

In addition, despite the inclusion of Wii Sports software with every system sale, Wii buyers also purchased an average of two additional games, compared to approximately one game per system for the installed bases of either competing new home system.

apparently the PS3 sold about 200K units

and mind you that these are US only numbers, so maybe it got a bit ahead of 200K

LOL at 1 million Wiis available in US by year's end - that's 3 million less than promised. I'm beginning to feel less bad about talking down pre-ordering, there WAS a shortage and there was no way to see it coming based on Nintendo's optimism.

*cough*
Worldwide.

You have to wonder... Japan got about as many at launch as the U.S. did, and how many will make it to Europe?

And wasn't that 3 million more supposed to be by the end of their fiscal year in March?

A local retail worker said "There's so few of them for all of Europe I have no idea what Nintendo is thinking".

I'm sure quite a bit of those zelda copies are people like myself, that have no Wii available.  I have Zelda, SD card, new tv, new surround system, Wii component cables, and there are no systems in any stores around here, and the online bundles are still stupid and still out of stock anyway.

I am sure there are many people in the same boat as me, and who wouldn't buy Zelda when they have the chance when we all thought Nintendo gamers would have the system by now.  I only know one person with Wii -he works at EB.

What I don't get is why the shortages?  I mean, sure Nintendo might have been too optimistic, but it seems like they've been producing these things for a long time and in huge quantities, and the technology isn't exactly leading-edge.

It looks like Nintendo will fail to get the 4 million out this year if it's not even sure about 1 million in N.A.  Hopefully we'll see at least 3 million, because this is a golden opportunity for Nintendo.

They promised 4 million WORLDWIDE, get this in your heads people, WORLDWIDE.

I wonder if the update that was causing problems on lots of the launch Wii caused them to hold back systems.  Also the strap issue will proably cause further delay while they replace the new systems with a better strap.  At this rate, probably by spring I'll be able to walk in a store and only have to stand in line for 10 hours or so to get one.  I've never tried so hard to give a company my hard earned dollars before.

Maybe they want to spread out the Wiis into the other territories, and perhaps that's why they changed their press report, or maybe they will only have close to 1 million by the end of year, so what, we know that they were hyping it when Reggie/Kaplan(sp?) announced the 4M units worldwide.

I think 1.75 million for NA, 1M for Europe, and 1.25M for Japan by December 31st. Ok even if they don't reach the targeted 4 million units worldwide by the end of the year, so what, they're sold out, which is a a good and bad thing in itself.

The woman in my office who I convinced to get a Wii for her husband is still not having any luck.  Each day that new shipments come into Future Shop or Best Buy, she says there are lines multiple times longer than the size of that week's shipments already there.

So imagine how many more they'd sell if more were made available.

Maybe Nintendo's holding some back so they can continue to have strong sales for multiple months in a row instead of just the launch window.

I don't really care much about the restocking anymore, what I'd like to know is the release schedule for good games. Since I'm getting TP for the GC that doesn't leave any interesting launch games.

I be very surprised if Nintendo doesn't break 1 million this year in North America.  I'm sure they are trying to get Wiis out as fast as possible.  Because lets face it in a good amount of areas every shipment is like launch day.

I took the striken sentence to mean that they aren't sure if they'll meet the one million target.  I suppose it could also be a case of not wanting to admit that there are shortages.

Well these numbers only include America not NORTH America.  Us canadians but lots of Wii's too  So just remember those numbers are just for the States and the original allocation was promised for North America.  Oh and the 4 million was worldwide not north america.

1 million can't be "available" if 600,000 are ALREADY SOLD.

"Available" is a poor word to use.  "were made availabe" is closer to truth, cuz i sure as hell don't see systems in stock anymore.
