Taking somewhat of a Diddy Kong Racing turn which I think is cool without being totally over done. At least gliding and underwater can offer new environments!

Looks fun, may not be super innovative, but it is something that hasn't been done before in a Mario kart game. As always the game will stand (or fall) on the level designs. Looking forward to it!

It was pretty cool towards the end of the trailer, they showed Peach coming out from the water and Mario landing from the sky. I guess your route isn't limited to one or the other, which could lead to some pretty interesting tracks, not to mention strategies. Kart customisation looks pretty sweet too, and offers a whole new world to players looking to find the best racer/kart option.

Retro helping out can only be seen as a good thing too.

For the new vehicle mechanics to actually make a tangible difference, the handling of the kart would need to be significantly altered when you don a glider or a propeller. That would make for a nice challenge if you had to quickly adapt to differently handling styles. Although having seen what people did in Mario Kart Wii to pull off crazy shortcuts, I hope that the glider isn't exploitable.

Like GoldenPhoenix said, it comes down to the track design. There's another issue: will the retro courses that inevitably show up be able to use any of the new elements?

I noted a few more things about the trailer, it seems MK3DS is reverting back to 8 players (I really liked the 12-player) and something else I noticed, but didn't really pay much attention to, was the return of coins. Unless my memory is failing me these haven't been present since Super Circuit and if they increase your speed like in previous iterations, it could affect race strategies even further.

I can't wait for it. Especially because Retro Studios(!) is codeveloping it with Nintendo. Still hoping for 3rd party characters!

Retro working on this will mean instant classic, but what in the world can they do that the main MK team can't?

I'm pretty sure it was confirmed that Retro's not really doing much of anything for this game.

Indeed. I believe the announcement that Retro Studios was involved later came with an addendum that they helped with just one track, the course based on Donkey Kong Country Returns, by supplying assets for it.

Is that right?! Good, they need to be working on anything but Mario.

Mario Kart 7 it is!

What if this starts a new trend? Adding high numbers like that just makes it sound played out. Except for Final Fantasy.

The new trailer showed a few new things, including Metal Mario, Lakitu, and a first-person mode. I couldn't tell if Metal Mario was a character or an item. As for Lakitu, I believe this would be the first game he's been playable. The first-person mode seems neat but disorienting.

Cool. I really like that, whereas watery holes in the track were previously hazards, they are now access points to a different portion of the course, with potential advantages and disadvantages.

Also, unless I'm very much mistaken, I think early on in the trailer, Mario goes off a ramp and performs a trick. It seems the trick system from Mario Kart Wii could be returning.

Thanks Caliban! But I didn't see Lakitu at all. And yup Killer, the tricks are back which I am very happy for, I really liked that in MKWii. Music is nice as well.

There's another video for Mario Kart 7 that does have Lakitu in it, and at least one new item to be used in the game.

Metal Mario is a missed opportunity.  The Metal Cap could have been an interesting new power up, especially since it would have obvious effects on the new gliding and water features.  I'd have liked to see the Mini Mushroom added, too, in that case.  How cool would it be to drive across the surface of the water?

I hate saying things like this but Metal Mario/Shadow Mario as playable characters are just lazy. Give me Kamek and some Koopa kids and everyone would be happy!

I agree, it is similar to the clones in Smash Brothers, heck the clones that infest many fighting games out there. Beginning to think it is a Japanese game design tradition. Oh well, at least we have one new character, and let's face it the heart and soul of the Mario Kart games is the level and arena design. If those hold up, it should be easier to forgive the lazy characters.

Yeah, I mean looks at all the clones in other popular racing games like Gran Turismo 5 and Forza 3!

I mean seriously, this is a racing game. Mario is clearly going to handle differently to Metal Mario, so it doesn't matter what they look like. We already have useless characters like Lakitu getting involved so I'm sure there's going to be a lot of characters, especially if they're already scraping the bottom of the barrel for guys like him.
